Congratulations to Our2014-2015 Board of Directors

Mission StatementThe mission of The Exchange Club Family Center is to break the cycle of child abuse and neglect by providing prevention, intervention, educational, and support services to families in an e ort to replace abusive and violent behavior with e ective parenting skills.

This past fi scal year of 2013-2014 has been a really exceptional year for the Center, and one that we can be proud of for years to come. During this time, our decision to merge the Center with CASA has met all of our expectations and more. Through this outreach we have been able to serve hundreds of additional abused and neglected children in Juvenile Court seeking safe, permanent homes.

We also were extremely proud to be selected as the “Best Place to Work” for a business of our size by The Commercial Appeal Top Workplaces! We all knew that we are the best place, but now this award confi rms it.

We now have 47 sta members and many of them trained and supervised over 80 graduate / doctoral level interns and 9 AmeriCorps members during the last 12 months.

In addition, we have been working with a consulting fi rm, Bridgespan, for the last 6 months, and with their guidance we are strengthening our infrastructure and planning for an exciting future. Every sta member was involved in these discussions, as well as a committee of Board members, and all of us felt that this was an extremely positive process with a lot of good suggestions that we will put into place in the months to come.

Next year promises to be even better and we all can be proud of where we are, and will be, in accomplishing our goal of positively changing children’s lives and giving them hope for a future free of child abuse and domestic violence. Thank you to everyone who has helped us in our 30 year journey to make these e orts possible.

The 4th annual conference, “I’m NOT Having a Baby Shower” was a resounding success! Record numbers participated and volunteered in the AmeriCorps – Project TLC event. AmeriCorps alumnae members, Jasuedia Killion and Phelisha Pierce-Harris, created the event when Jasuedia realized most of the baby shower invitations she received were for teen mothers. She decided to have a self-celebrating shower with a twist: “I’m NOT having a baby shower”. The two expanded on that idea, and created the teen conference to encourage participants to avoid unhealthy choices that could negatively impact their lives.

Current AmeriCorps director, Ti any Smith, a Family Center sta member, widened the conference’s reach by including male participants, a panel of speakers, and vendors to encourage and empower the teens. Over 200 teens and almost 90 volunteers came to Wooddale High School to be a part of this movement.

Tony Nichelson of The Man of the House mentoring group, Kappa Alpha Psi, the Memphis Police Department, and Dr. Todd Motley of Motley Internal Medicine led the teen boys in courses on literacy, communication skills, the role of young men in relationships, teen dating violence, and an array of skills in being a productive young man in this community.

The teen girls’ workshops included “How to Be a Good Business Woman” by Erika Cain of g.i.r.l. twenty four, “Discovering the Princess in YOU” by Takeitha Peterson with Strayer University, and a lesson on the warning signs of STD’s/STI’s and healthy relationships by Cherisse Scott. Dr. Karen Streeter, director of Cambridge College and talk show host of “On the couch with Dr. K.” inspired all the teens to further their education and to not stop until reaching their potential.

Thanks to our o¤ cial sponsor, The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, and to our presenting sponsor, Sweet P’s Gourmet Sweets. Groups such as Successful Single Moms, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc., and Sigma Gamma Rho sororities not only empowered, but donated to the cause to continue this event. Vendors included: The Blues Project, A Step Ahead Foundation, Sister Reach, InCahoots Custom Bracelets, The Teen Appeal, UT College of Dentistry, Saint Francis Hospital, The Memphis Health Department, and the O¤ ce of Early Childhood and Youth.

The Exchange Club Family Center partners with the AmeriCorps National Community Service Program and trains AmeriCorps – Project TLC members to serve as volunteers who work to end child abuse in Shelby County.

Branches Out

On Friday Feb 28th a group of students from St. Agnes Academy participated in the St. Agnes Academy Cares Day by volunteering at the Center. The students helped sort baby clothes and worked in the First STEPS “Little Feet Boutique”.  They also cleaned toys and straightened up the playrooms and supervised visitation rooms. Thank you!

A dedicated group of FedEx Services Internal Audit employees toured the Center and donated over 30 tote bags fi lled with toiletries, food, and baby supplies. Thank you for your support!

Justice McBride, BSA Troop 212, conducted a book drive benefi ting The Exchange Club Family Center for his Eagle Scout Service Project. He collected over 1200 gently worn used books for children and teenagers.

Working Together

Page 3: Exchange club family center summer newsletter 2015

The Exchange Club Family Center was chosen, among 96 other very prestigious companies and organizations, as a “2013 Top Workplace” in Memphis by The Commercial Appeal. The Commercial Appeal partnered with Philadelphia-based WorkplaceDynamics in conducting the survey. Over 28,000 employees across Memphis were sent surveys that resulted in this selection, a tremendous honor. The Center was also chosen as THE top place to work in Memphis in the small employer category (35 to 149 employees).

In addition to being selected as a top place to work, The Exchange Club Family Center was singled out for a Leadership Award. The Leadership Award was given to only three entities among these top organizations in recognition of the strength and commitment of the

primary leader. This award is a tremendous honor for the Center, and a well-deserved testament to the incredible job Barbara King does every day. The Center was the only organization to receive double accolades.

As a member of the Board of Directors, I am honored that The Exchange Club Family Center welcomes me as one of their own. To be in a leadership role for such a respected organization was beyond my wildest dreams. But today, I am here to share that anything is possible. The Center has given me the opportunity to give back to the community and to help others, just as the sta of the Center reached out and helped me years ago.

About 9 years ago, I walked through the doors of The Exchange Club Family Center for the fi rst time. The abuse I endured at the hands of my now ex-husband did not immediately come across to me as abuse. In the beginning it was subtle, manipulative and emotional. I thought, maybe if I were a better wife and mother, my husband would not be so angry. The harder I tried, the more recognizable the abuse became. The turning point in my relationship was when I eventually ended up in the emergency room. I was told by the emergency room physician that I was fortunate I was not dead or paralyzed due to the injuries I endured. At that moment, I knew I had to leave, but I did not know how. That is when I found The Exchange Club Family Center. After seeking counseling at the Center for myself, and counseling for my older daughter and play therapy for my younger daughter, I decided that I, too, wanted to help victims of domestic violence and give back to my community. The encouragement I received from the Center’s sta inspired me to pursue my Master’s degree

in Counseling. What The Exchange Club Family Center did for me and my children, I wanted to do for others. While in school, I was able to return to the Center as a counseling intern. Upon graduation, I was asked to sit on the Center’s Board of Directors. I have been able to see the organization in its entirety; as a client,

as an intern, and fi nally, as a board member. I entered the doors of the Center in 2005 broken and battered, but walked out in 2011 with a Master’s degree in Counseling and a renewed sense of self, purpose, and destiny; I am a survivor.

I am not alone in that I was battered and abused at the hands of a family member. There are so many women, men, and children who su er in silence at the hands of those who are supposed to love and protect them. I am here as a testament that you can survive, you will heal, you will overcome. Domestic violence does not defi ne who I am, but it helped shape me into the person I am today. The road to recovery was not easy, but my Exchange Club family was there with me every step of the way. Not only has the Center been a pivotal part of my recovery from being

a victim to becoming a survivor, but it has also helped me become a domestic violence educator and an advocate for victim’s rights.

On Saturday March 1, 2014, over 500 Greater Memphis philanthropists attended the 17th annual Hands of Hope Auction Party which defi ned Hope as “Passion, Coming Together and Support”. The trendy silent and live auction items varied from fabulous trips to delicious dinners. Guests enjoyed festive music by Party Planet and fi ne catering from A Moveable Feast, Tart and Café Las Flores. This year’s event, presented by IBERIABANK and State Systems, Inc., at the Columns downtown raised over $130,000 for The Exchange Club Family Center’s 23 growing programs to better serve the children in our community.

We are so grateful to our generous sponsors, dedicated volunteers and hardworking steering committee, led by Event Chairs, Jessica and Ted Simpson.

Celebrating our 15th year with the Germantown Charity Horse Show“For over 16 years now, The Exchange Club Family Center has been the charity benefi ciary of the annual Germantown Charity Horse Show. The GCHS is run solely by volunteers who work all year to bring this nationally acclaimed, all breed show to the Memphis community. These volunteers raise the funds to produce the show with substantially all proceeds going to the Center each year. As a result, over half a million dollars has been contributed to The Exchange Club Family Center to end child abuse and family violence. As past president of The Germantown Charity Horse Show, I know how critically important and special our working relationship with The Exchange Club has been for GCHS.

As a current board member of The Exchange Club Family Center, I am honored to witness these contributions at work in such an unbelievably meaningful way.”

--Lynda Smith, Past President Germantown Charity Horse Show 2008-2009; Board Member, The Exchange Club Family Center 2013 - 2015
