What’s inside?

3 Indian Institute of ManagementAhmedabad

The institute’s soul is characterized by its faculty and alumni. The faculty consists of dedicated academicians, eminent researchers and innovative entrepreneurs, who are committed to bring out the latent potential in every student. The lineage is so star studded that it is an honor and a privilege for any budding leader to be a part of its hallowed portals.

It was the vision of the three great luminaries – Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, Ravi J. Mathai and Kasturbhai Lalbhai – to create a revered management institute in the country. As a realization of their dreams, the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad was established on December 11, 1961 in collaboration with the Government of India, the Government of Gujarat, and the industry. The Institute also collaborated initially with Harvard Business School. This collaboration greatly influenced the Institute’s approach to education. Gradually, it emerged as a confluence of the best of Eastern and Western values.

The curriculum at IIM Ahmedabad is the result of constant innovation and continuous review by the faculty with inputs from practitioners in the industry, the alumni and the students. The institute follows the case-study based approach to management education. As the case studies are based on real life situations, the emphasis is not on rote-learning the theoretical concepts but more on their practical applications. Through seminars, lectures, role-plays, simulations and industrial visits, the institute aims for a holistic development of students to enable them to deal with everyday managerial situations.

ABOUT IIMA In less than five decades, IIMA has evolved from being India’s premier

management institute to a reputed international school of

management. The PGP and the PGP-X programs of the institute

feature at the 18th and the 30th rank in the latest FT Rankings of the

World’s Business Schools and the PGP-ABM program is ranked No-1 in

the world.

Academics IIMA boasts of faculty comprising professors

who are among the very best in their respective

fields. Each faculty member brings to class a

repertoire of rich experiences and wisdom along

with invaluable industry insights.

At IIM Ahmedabad, 1 course credit roughly requires about 25 contact hours. Most of the courses at IIM Ahmedabad follow a continuous evaluation scheme as the institute believes it to be a more formative, learning-oriented and process-oriented model of evaluation. Daily work (Quizzes, Essays, Presentations and Class participation), Individual Projects, Group Assignments, and Term based examinations form an integral part of the evaluation scheme. During the pre-registration phase (one month prior to arrival on campus), the PGP Exchange Office will send the list of all courses open to Incoming Exchange students via e-mail. The tentative timetable and course outline will accompany the course list to help students choose the right set of courses. The students need to inform the Exchange Office about the list of courses they wish to study - after due approval from the coordinator at their home university. Further, closer to departure, the students will receive confirmation on the courses as well as the final timetable. The actual confirmation of courses will happen once the students are in IIM Ahmedabad campus. IIM Ahmedabad offers its students the flexibility to try out new courses and drop chosen courses, before the fourth class of the course starts.

GANDHI ASHRAM

Located near Vadaj, the Sabarmati Ashram was once house of Mahatma Gandhi. The ashram was founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1915, and today without doubt it is the biggest tourist attraction in Ahmedabad. It lies on the tranquil stretch of the Sabarmati River and was referred to as

the Satyagraha Ashram during the lifetime of the Mahatma. It was from

here that the Mahatma began his famous 'Dandi March' in 1930 to protest

against the Salt Tax imposed by the British. One can see the three wise

monkeys and many more of Gandhiji’s teachings at the ashram premises.

The ashram today continues the work started by Mahatma and houses a

handicrafts centre, a handmade paper factory and a spinning wheel

factory.

JUMAMASJID

It is amongst the most popular tourist sites in the city. Built using yellow sandstone, this mosque stands on 260 pillars which support 15 domes at varying elevations. The mosque was built by Ahmad Shah in 1423. It is easily accessible as it stands in the centre of the old city. This imposing structure is a great example of the Muslim architecture of that period.

KANKARIA LAKE

A circular lake built in 1451 by Sultan Qutub-ud-Din. In the centre of the lake is an island garden with a summer palace known as “NaginaWadi”. It has a very beautiful Musical Fountain show (the lights and the fountain are especially worth a trip). The lake is a popular recreation centre and is surrounded by parks, 'BAL Vatika' - an aquarium, a boat club, a natural history museum and a zoo.

A prepaid taxi from the airport would cost around Rs. 500, whereas the auto charge will be approximately Rs. 200. If you are returning from a leisure trip around India via train, come out from the railway station and call for an Auto. The auto fare from the railway station should be around Rs. 150.

2. What am I supposed to do when I arrive at the

campus?

On reaching the campus, please contact our Student Activities Office (SAO, Phone No.079-66324566) located in Dorm-4 for the allocation of your dorm room. Our security person on duty at the old campus main-gate will guide you to Dorm-4. The SAO will complete all required formalities and also assist you in case you have any queries. 3. How’s the weather like? Do I need to bring in

warm clothes?

Ahmedabad weather is usually warm to hot (and humid) throughout the year (avg. Temp: ~ 30-35°C). During the winter months, however, i.e. From November to February, the climate is quite pleasant. During this time, the temperature ranges from 15°C to 30°C and the city experiences extremely dry climatic conditions. One can feel a slight chill during the month of January, mainly because of the cold northerly winds blowing in the region.

Not to forget, the monsoon sweeps the city during mid- June to mid-September. The south west monsoon is responsible for the humid weather at this time. The annual average rainfall in the city is 93.2 cm. A rain-coat will come in handy around this time of the year.

4. What else do I need to bring? Please bring your favorite brands of toiletries, personal care products, mosquito repellants and medicines if you have a strong preference. However,we have a well-stocked convenience store here in the campus from where you can buy a variety of everyday goods such as toiletries, personal care products and medication. If you wish to use any electronic devices from your home country, do remember that electricity is supplied at 230 V (50Hz) in India. However, converters and adapters are easily available in India. 5. How do I register for the courses? You will get the list of courses open to exchange students from the PGP exchange office for pre-registration, after the course announcement for each slot by the PGP Office. You can choose the courses up to a maximum credit limit of 8 credits, as per the guidelines by PGP/Exchange Office. 6. Whom do I need to contact in case I need some

help? The Exchange Council will be allocating you buddies, who are students of the PGP program here at IIMA. Feel free to contact them anytime (by email or phone) for any query whatsoever – academic/non-academic. If your queries go answered then you can directly send an email to [email protected]. 7. I’ve heard horror stories about spicy Indian

food! Is it really that bad? How’s the mess food?

It’s not that bad! Plus, you can always opt for a totally spice-less diet. There are plenty of nice guys in the mess committee who are willing to take care of any problems being faced by exchange students. The institute is within 10 minutes of Subway, McDonald’s and Dominos outlets, among other choices.

India is a colorful country of many sights,

sounds and smells. An extraordinary amount

of diversity can sometimes be overwhelming

to a first time visitor and traveler. Animals on the streets, an extraordinary number of

people, smells of incense sticks as well as dirt, beggars, hawkers, vendors, huts, chawls, high rise buildings and five

star restaurants; be prepared to witness both poverty and prosperity exist hand in hand as you move out of

the campus to travel and explore. Do communicate with your Exchange Buddies to

understand how much would be an appropriate amount to tip in a hotel, how to master the art of Bargaining and

how much to pay to an “auto-wallah” for a 5 km journey.

SETTLING IN INDIA

Social Culture and Etiquettes Like any other country India has its own set of social etiquettes. There is an Indian way of greeting with folded hands, maintaining (or not maintaining!) personal distance while conversing, tipping in hotels and so on. You can explore about Indian culture online, where a lot has been discussed and analyzed; and you can easily pick-up the social cues once you arrive here, maybe after a little bit of experimentation. In case a need be, members of the Exchange Council of IIM Ahmedabad will always be there help you out with these issues.

Food A lot exchange students soon discover that food in India could be spicy, but they get used to it very fast. Nevertheless, you will find a spectacular diversity with respect to food and cuisine in Ahmedabad and you will easily find foods that suit your taste buds. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food is easily available, inside and outside the campus. Regional, National and International hotels are easily accessible from campus. Many hotels also offer home-delivery services.

Academic Culture: Academics in IIM Ahmedabad are of high priority, high intensity and high rigor (depending on your course structure). Those of you who have not experienced Case Methodology of Teaching before would take a week’s worth of classes or less to figure out the way it works. IIM Ahmedabad intends to teach management education through lively real world case discussion more often than the lecture method. The professors at IIM Ahmedabad are the best in business. They might crack Indian context jokes once in a while, but they do make extra effort to ensure that all Exchange Students are board. Indian students are also extremely co-operative in working with fellow peers.

Weather (refer FAQ) Indian weather is known for vagaries. Students in Term V and VI will not face that much problem and usually adjust with ease. There are a fair number of air-conditioned spots on campus and coolers can be installed in rooms.

IMPORTANT CONTACTS

22 Indian Institute of ManagementAhmedabad

To describe the entire experience in one line, I think that exchange students cry twice; once when they come to Ahmedabad and once when they leave! The campus life is simply great, to get used to the particularities of India, people are extremely helpful. At first, the whole thing is kind of stressful, mostly because of lack of information but as time passes, we get used to things, and we get to love this place so much that it becomes very hard to leave!

Paul Ricard Double Degree Student from HEC Paris

Adjusting to the culture was an adventure, but it went smoother than what I had expected before coming here. Same is true for the lifestyle at IIMA, especially as people told me what to expect! Academic aspect of IIMA is outstanding. Even though a totally different approach than what I am used to, I felt very comfortable both in class and in my study groups. Definitely, the time I spent with the guys in the dorm and of course the experience of the whole Indian culture was simply amazing!

Benjamin Bauer Exchange Student from WHU, Vallender

The highlight was definitely becoming a part of the dorm family and getting to know my fellow dorm mates. I very much enjoyed my classes and the engagement that I had with my professors. I played Frisbee every night with the students. I loved the food and exploring both Ahmedabad and India.

Amir Fouad Exchange student from Georgetown University, Washington

India is definitely a country to visit. The learning involved not only staying on the campus but also to travel on weekends to other parts and understand other cultures, other cities, other people, other religions as so on. Overall everyone including the professors, supervisors, and the students are very kind. There is always someone to help you when there is a problem. Professors are excellent and very approachable. I found the classes both challenging and interactive. The pace of work is extremely fast. I definitely had a great time here.

Romain Herge Exchange student from ESSEC
