HEAT EXCHANGER/PRESSURE VESSEL
SPECIFICATIONS FOR INSPECTION OF HEATER AND ASSOCIATED COMPONENTS:
1) All materials need to be identified against test certificates at the vendor’s works before commencement of fabrication.
2) Specimen samples must be taken and strength analysis be carried out. Heat treatment charts for all materials need to be prepared and complied with.
3) Ensuring that edge preparation is carried out in accordance with standard welding practices for high pressure equipment.
4) Ensure that welding procedures are carried out in accordance with the standards. Also, certified welders are appointed to perform the job and appropriate welding electrodes are used for welding the components. These must be approved before commencement of fabrication.
5) Radiography of welds is mandatory and the reports are analyzed and necessary approvals are obtained.
6) Establish procedures for hydro test (75 bar) and carry them out. 7) An expendable gasket (1 no.) suitable for hydro‐test of the heat exchanger should be used,
which will be discarded thereafter. 8) A new SS heat exchanger gasket (AISI 304), in packed condition to be supplied to the Indian
Institute of Science as mentioned in List of Components. 9) All the above procedures are carried out and established by third party inspectors, preferably
Lloyds. 10) Variations in size of the shell may be permitted upto ±10mm. Minimum thickness of the shell to
be 60mm. 11) Circularity (surface finish N12 to N25) of the inner wall of the shell to be maintained and if
necessary machining is permitted to obtain the same. Machining of the shell on the outside is not necessary as the heat exchanger will be insulated with appropriate ceramic blankets.
12) It is preferable to have a seamless shell, if the process permits. However, a welded shell is technically acceptable if statutory tests are carried out for its approval.
Kindly mention if all the major components like shell, dished end, Weld neck RF flange, Slip on RF flange are made out of multiple welded pieces or made without welds. Please tick, if the component is manufactured in single piece else mention the number of parts in the chart given below:
