Exciting Changes at FC Alliance
We are excited about the future of the club and want to inform our members about all of
the news.
A New Home
As of May 1, 2016 FC Alliance will be calling our home. We are excited to
say that we have reached an agreement to work with D1 for rain insurance, Winter
League, Summer League, SAQ Training, practice space, discounted Adult Classes, and
Winter Tournaments. (We will no long have a facility at Amherst.)
“I am extremely excited to partner with the premier soccer club in Knoxville. D1 and FC
Alliance share a common vision to provide athletes the best training facility in the country!”
Iron Sharpens Iron,
- Will Bartholomew (CEO and Founder)
In May, D1 is starting renovations to their facility that will include new turf, new paint,
and a new turf space outside. It will be the best sports training facility in Knoxville.
D1 will also be the new club uniform sponsor for the next 2 years. All uniforms will
display their logo.
Big Hire
FC Alliance is excited to announce that we have reached an agreement with the most
successful girls coach in Tennessee history. We would like to welcome Laban Defriese
to our coaching staff! Laban has won 17 state Championships, a Regional
Championship and was a National Finalist in 2012.
“Laban will be a huge asset for FC Alliance and I am excited for the players in our club to have
such a great opportunity to work with one of the best.”
– Jon Schneider, Director of Operations/Founder
Promotions
FC Alliance would like to congratulate Chad Stocton on being named the Boys’ Assistant
Director of Coaching and Boys’ Director of College Relations. We also want to congratulate
Kevin Keck as being named the Girls’ Assistant Director of Coaching and Girls’ Director of
College Relations.
“It makes it special when we can promote from within our organization. Chad and Kevin have
been with us for years now and we know the type of coaches and people we are getting.”
– Jon Schneider, Director of Operations/Founder
Coaching Staff
FC Alliance has the best coaching staff in the state of Tennessee. This is
supported by the numbers.
Consider:
Director Jon Schneider has won 16 state championships and had 9 state finalists; he
has had numerous teams with high levels of success at the regional and national level.
His teams have won the highest brackets of some of the top tournaments in the country.
Now add Laban DeFriese- the most successful girls’ coach in the history of the state of
Tennessee- with 17 state championships and a national finalist (the best finish by any
club team in the state’s history). Their 33 combined state championships are the most
combined by any two coaches in the history of the state.
Next is Girls’ Director Josh Gray, who has guided teams to 8 state championships, two
regional finals and four regional semifinals. ADC Girls’ Director Filip Leander has
coached teams to 6 state championships, two state finals, and he has had one team
finish ranked #1 nationally over 1,000 other ranked teams. Gray has 21 years coaching
experience and Leander has 17. ADC Boys Director Brad Camp is one of the fastest
rising stars in the region. He has already earned roles as the head coach of the
Knoxville Force and the assistant boys’ director for the state’s Olympic Development
Program.
These five coaches have hundreds of former players in college soccer and many others
playing professionally and internationally.
Coach Kevin Keck is quickly amassing a similar resume. His recent state championship
and region semifinalist finish has only been overshadowed by the fact that 45 of his
players in the last two years have moved on to college soccer. Coaches Chad Stocton
and Carrie Ollom boast similar accomplishments, earning state championships and
helping many players transition to the next level. Other coaches to claim state titles
include Steven Townley and Robbie Wickham.
The club’s staff has been carefully handpicked and coaches are held to extremely high
performance standards. Many of them have playing and coaching backgrounds which
would make them stars at other clubs. Coaches like Townley (Australia), Wickham
(Trinidad) and Frank Cravens (USA U15) have played internationally. Amanda DeVolk
played in 59 career games for NCAA powerhouse Rutgers. Caroline Brown and Tori
Bailey were successful Lady Vols. Brown twice earned All-SEC honors, while Bailey
played in over 80 career games for Tennessee. Abby Millilo starred at Ball State,
playing in over 50 career games. Kathryn Healy won two national championships at
Lee University. Adelmo “Junior” Santos and Claudio Rico both grew up playing in
Brazil. Eddy Semaan played in Lebanon as a youth and Will Turcious played in
Honduras.
Other experienced coaches in the club have long impacted the game: Karla Helton,
David Clothier and Mark Edmands have all developed some of the area’s most
successful players over the last decade and beyond. Coming up the ranks are a batch
of carefully vetted coaches with extremely bright futures: Marty Baker, Jesse Morrow,
Fernando Lopez, Chris Johnson, Michael Roberts, Kayleigh Olson, Ben Munger, Zach
Standefer, AJ Cook, Ben Munger, Chris Curtain, Ron Roskelly and Derek Thomas. We
also have satellite academy directors leading our program in surrounding communities:
Tom Leonard (Sevier), Craig Shields (Norris) and Dan Jenkins (Clinton).
FC Alliance will continue to find and recruit the top coaching talent in the state as the
club continues to grow. We firmly believe that the most import thing a club offers is
quality coaching in a quality program.
New Fee Schedule
FC Alliance has contracted to use a new registration system called KYCK. This system
is very easy to use, but it will have us collecting fees a little differently than in years
past. We feel this will be a better system for our club and our members.
For the 1st time in over 2 years FC Alliance will have a slight increase in club fees to
help us keep up with the rising costs of running a full service soccer club. Basically we
lowered the tryout deposit from $100 to a tryout fee of $54.99. In addition, Black team
players have about a $100 increase for the year. Red, Gold, and White team players
have about a $50 increase for the year. All players have the Preseason Camp costs
bundled into their club fee and this includes 2 practice shirts. This fee structure does
absorb the credit card charges and a convenience fee will not be assessed to our
families as it was in our old system. The only assessed fee will be $4.99 and that goes
to KYCK during the initial signup for tryouts. Also you will see we have more payments
on your club fees to help make it easier for everyone to play for FC Alliance.
Preseason Camp and 2 practice shirts are included in these fees
Trapped players in the 2003 age group that do not play High School will have an additional $210 fee to cover costs
for that club season. This fee will be paid at the beginning that season. (See Trapped Player section below)

New Heading Rule Changes for US Youth Players
US Club Soccer is clarifying the following implementation guidelines for U.S. Soccer’s Recognize to
Recover Player Safety Campaign, specifically as it relates to concussion initiatives and heading for
youth players:
The Federation is recommending, and US Club Soccer is requiring immediately, new rules
as it relates to heading, as follows:
Players in U-11 programs and younger shall not engage in heading, either in practices or in
games.
Limited heading in practice for players in U-12 and U-13 programs. More specifically, these
players shall be limited to a maximum of 30 minutes of heading training per week, with no more
than 15-20 headers per player, per week.
Clubs should be aware of circumstances in which individual consideration is needed. For
example:
o A 10 year old playing at U-12 or older should not head the ball at all.
o An 11 or 12 year old playing at U-14 or older should abide by the heading restrictions in
practice.
Referees should enforce these restrictions by age group according to the specified rules.
Referees will not be assessing the age of individual players on the field; they will enforce the rules
for the age group.
Leagues and organizations are free to set their own standards, as long as the minimum
requirements outlined above are met.

New Format Changes
Per US Soccer, all youth clubs will be using the following formats:
U8-u10 will play 7v7
U11-u12 will play 9v9
U13-u19 will play 11v11

Position:
The FC Alliance adherence to the age classification changes is based upon literal guidelines for
age denominations as detailed in the chart above and our philosophical approach to
development.
Guidelines:
There will be mandatory changes governed solely by the year in which a child was born.
FC Alliance, like other clubs, has no say in this matter. Many cases will result where players are
viewed as skipping an age group. For instance, a player on the older end of his or her current
team with a birth date between Aug. 1 and Dec. 31 will transition to an age group that is two
levels above their current team.
Example: Kathy is an Under-12 FC Alliance player born in October 2003. She will NOT be eligible for U-
13 events in the coming soccer year under the new alignment based upon her birth year. Players born in
2003 will instead be identified as U-14 players for the 2016-2017 season.
Kathy's current U-12 teammate, Audrey, was born in January 2004. Audrey is eligible to play U-13 under the new alignment. She may also be pulled up to play with an older age group if the FC Alliance Staff feels this is beneficial to her development as a player (see Philosophy).
Philosophy:
FC Alliance will use a flexible and logical approach to tryouts
Two factors will determine the player’s appropriate placement:
1) Level of play against the standard – We will recommend that players ‘play up’ in an older
age group if we assess their level as being considerably ahead of the standard at a particular
age group. This determination is subjective. We consider the player’s performance and attitude
as they relate to technical, tactical, physical and psychological development.
2) Quality Playing Time – Our goal is for all players to be placed on a team where they will
earn the most playing time. If a player wants to tryout an age above their age they are
encouraged to do so, but if the staff feels the player will not earn enough playing time we will
place them in their appropriate age group, to further their development.
Application:
Current FC Alliance Players:
FC Alliance directors and coaches will make recommendations to all current players in advance
of upcoming tryouts regarding which age groups to attend for the 2016-2017 soccer year.
These recommendations will be based upon the level against the standard detailed above for
younger age groups. High school graduation years will also be considered for U-15 and above.
We will recommend that players compete at the ‘older’ level if we feel this is beneficial to their
development.
Example: Fred is a current FC Alliance U-11 player born in March 2005. Some of his teammates will
move to U-12 upon the transition. Some will jump to U-13 (those born in 2004). Fred remains eligible to
play U-12 during the 2016-2017 season as this group will be primarily comprised of players born in 2005.
Alliance staff may recommend that Fred attend the tryouts for the U-13 group if he is considered to be
significantly above the standard of the current U-11 group that will transition to U-12.
Implications for players in ADC program (U8-U12) – We will implement the philosophy of
weighing players’ level of play against the standard in these youngers ages. However, we
anticipate the majority of our younger players will be placed in their appropriate age group (see
chart on page 1) due to how quickly players change and develop in younger ages.
New Players:
We recommend that players attending the FC Alliance tryouts that are not currently involved
with our program are registered for the tryouts correlating to the child’s birth year. Our directors
and coaches may recommend that advanced players return to be evaluated against an ‘older’
age group based upon their performance at the initial tryout.
All players entering the program at U-15 and above should contact our staff in advance of the
tryouts for recommendations based upon graduation year and prior playing experience.
We may make recommendations to new players that would see them trying out at an age
grouping different to that signaled by the chart above where we are familiar with the player
based upon prior involvement with our programming.
Trapped Players:
Players in eighth grade who participate on teams primarily filled with ninth graders and seniors
that have teammates who moved on to college are commonly referred to as ‘trapped’ because
they are left without a team when their teammates are playing high school or college soccer.
The trapped seasons for high school are the fall season for girls and the spring season for boys.
Certain club tournaments permit teams to include trapped players on younger age group rosters
during the fall season. FC Alliance will proactively pursue these opportunities for affected
players. We will be heavily focused on training during the season and we will work with ‘trapped’
players to provide the best possible environment in which to improve through these few months.
FC Alliance has and will continue to offer a full fall training program for players in high school.
This is offered to players who wish to participate with FC Alliance instead of high school soccer.
This is not mandatory training. FC Alliance does not require players to opt out of high school
soccer. This is the player’s decision. Our aim is to support the development of the player
through this process.
We would like to take a moment to recognize the class of 2016. This class has developed into great soccer players, but more importantly great people. The 2016’s continue on a tradition at FC Alliance of moving on to play soccer at the next level. They have increased our total number of college commitments to 235 since 2008. We are very proud of this accomplishment. Here are our 2008- 2018 College Commitments, we could not be more proud of all of our payers:
