Two Tablets featuring The Ten Commandments found In Park ExtensionWhile doing some construction, workers find tablets containing the Ten Commandments at Park Extension synagogue

It was earlier this month that a demolition crew was working on the Beth Aaron Synagogue found on Stuart Street in Park Extension. During the demolition and scheduled work planned for the location, two tablets containing the Ten Commandments were found behind a wall. This was first brought to my attention on social media in a post by local community member, Sasha M. Dyck. He had been alerted by a neighbor that the workers had found the tablets and were planning on throwing them out, not realizing just how important they might have been.

The event has been shrouded in mystery since they’re uncovering, and it has had many locals wondering why they were placed there and who placed them there in the first place?

A brief history of the Ten Commandments

Perhaps this isn’t necessary at all for most of you, but perhaps there are those out there that need a quick refresher, so here it goes: The Ten Commandments in Jewish, Christian, Orthodox and Catholic teachings, were the rules given to Moses by God in the form of a Burning Bush that his people and followers were meant to follow. These rules were written upon tablets of stone and Moses was to descend the mountain and teach his followers these rules, which in the end turned out to be much harder than initially expected.

We’ll stop there with the history and/or Theological lesson, as we hope we’ve conveyed the importance of them and this find over to you, dear readers.

But in the end, could these stone tablets actually be the original?

History of findings the world over

In the end, discoveries like these have been made the world over and many times at that. Tablets like these have been created for many churches and synagogues and in honor of the original tablets.

In reality, very much like the Holy Grail, the original tablets have been sought after by many theologians and archeologists alike, as movies like Indiana Jones have often shown us. But Hollywood action/adventure epics of the past aside, it’s very unlikely that these are the original tablets, as I was granted a look myself once my investigation got under way by workers of SPG Construction on site.

What happened … and in our very community

I was interested the minute I saw the post on social media and contacted Sasha myself. He was awesome and told me everything he could about the situation—everything he knew and even gave me updates as the week progressed. Essentially he got an inspector over there in record time, and the tablets were saved before they could be thrown out.

What happens next is up in the air, but the discovery of these tablets alone is news enough for now, and the fact that they will indeed be preserved. All that’s left to do, Sasha informed us, is to see who will take ownership of them … the synagogue, or perhaps someone else.

Oldest stone tablets soldIt was reported by CNN that in 2016, the oldest

stone tablets were sold and for the whopping sum of $850,000! According to this source, the tablets were known to be the oldest in recorded history.

We doubt that these here would be sold, as they do not seem as antique as the latter tablets reported on by CNN, but they mean so much more to the members of the community, and the mystery behind them only ads to that importance.

A Journey into the synagogueAnd speaking of Indiana Jones, perhaps I took

a trip back to my boyhood when I entered the construction site at the Beth Aaron Synagogue on Stuart, as I was let in by the workers (2 of them), to photograph the tablets. I made my way past some pretty sketchy stairs, and yes, it was Indiana I thought about, making his way down those lost tunnels of the past. In the end, perhaps it was because I knew of the importance of these tablets that had me thinking along that line.

And it was when I saw the tablets finally,

laying there amidst the rubble of a modern-day construction site, that it hit me even more. Lying there upon that littered floor lay some of the most important words or messages, according to some, ever inscribed in the history books—the message behind the words—and for so many nationalities, cultures and schools of belief.

A big thanks to Sasha, a community member that

cares deeply about its roots and what happens to the historical elements of the community … an important thing to consider as society moves forward, because it’s our history that made us who we all are today.

As it stands at press time, the tablets have been moved to a local pastor’s care. The pastor stated to Sasha: “It’s not clear yet who will take them.”

The tablets were left in this state while workers did their job around them—when asked about them, workers still had not much of an idea about their im-portance or their fate

Of course this has been coming for quite some time and no doubt it was to be expected. It’s no big news to anyone that there are those out there refusing to wear a mask in public spaces,

especially businesses all over the city. Social media is aflame with those for or against the decision and as it should be, as we are a democracy after all. But perhaps those refusing to wear a mask aren’t seeing the whole overall picture.

Just recently the government of Quebec stated that masks were manda-tory in all public spaces like stores and restaurants and others. Now call it a “gracing period” or what have you, but as of last Saturday, the government would be issuing hefty fines to anyone not wearing a mask in said places, and those fines would be hefty ones indeed.

The pandemic leading up to thisIf you’ll permit me a small review, the pandemic is one that is proving

quite difficult to pass over in terms of moving forward. It seems to have a stronghold on many nations the world over and keeping it contained seems to be quite difficult to do, especially for those governing the many nations the world over.

Here in Quebec, Premiere Legault has done everything in his power along with his administration to rid the region of the pandemic. Of course, there are those that have criticized his decisions, but then again that can be said of any governing body in North America as well.

At the end of the day, all they can do is what we are doing … listen to those that know what they’re talking about and hope for a resolution to these issues.

The fines themselvesTo say that the fines are expensive would be quite simple to state just

that and stop there. In essence, the fines are extraordinarily expensive, but they were set in place for good reason. Many have been fined over the gracing period since masks became mandatory and yes, there were even some arrests if you all remember the recent Tim Horton’s incident in the city where a local man was tackled to the ground out of refusing to wear a mask in the restaurant. So yeah … this has been coming for quite some time, but in the end, it’s all for a good cause, no matter how crazy it’s gotten out there—and believe me when I say it’s gotten crazy.

The government has stated over and over again that the masks do help, and in the end, they hope that these masks or rather the wearing of them will help in stopping the spread of Covid-19. The fines themselves will act as inspiration, and will hopefully dissuade those not willing to comply.

Karaoke barsAs it turns out, Karaoke bars will be closing, or rather not allowing

patrons to enter the stage area of particular establishments, if they have one where singing at the microphone is possible. This practice was obviously a problem, as those at the mic would certainly rip off their masks and try to belt out one of their favorite songs in order to have a good time and essentially garnering themselves a few seconds of notoriety.

The closing of these bars and or stage areas is also good sense, very much like the fining of not wearing masks, and if you think about it, you’ll agree as well.

Who we’re doing this forIn the end, perhaps it gets lost in the media and out there on social

media as to why we’re doing this. Covid-19 doesn’t affect everyone the same way and those that have gotten it and have gotten over it are certainly not those that are severely at risk. So who, in the end, are we doing all this for?

The sick, the old and those that are at a higher risk for whatever reason are those we must protect out there. So … in the end, if that means wearing a mask when we go out and washing our hands an exaggerated amount of times and even singing at home alone or in the shower until this thing passes us by, I’d say those at risk are well worth the discomfort. Wouldn’t you?

The current state of housing—specifically for renters— in the area of Park Extension has been in question for quite some time, many worried that evictions are on the rise as we’ve reported in the past here at the Park Extension News, and wondering that perhaps this can only get worse.

That is of course was until members of the borough district recently purchased a building on Hutchison—one that was originally owned by a private investor and you won’t believe what local government is planning to do with it.

An historic buildingThe sign for the old Johnny Brown shoe shop

can still be seen on the façade of the building on Hutchison. It speaks of the old days when shoes—specifically ballet shoes–weren’t shipped in from overseas, but hand-crafted by many shoe makers city-wide (including this writer’s grandfather). Companies like that and of course Angelo Luzio were in high demand before the turn of the century, but have all fallen to time and progression.

The remnants of this building and/or space have been empty since the company closed its doors at that locale and the site has been a sore one at that on the corner of such a busy street. Earlier plans for the building were met with mixed reviews and that’s putting it softly, but news that the government has finally gotten involved has gotten locals excited.

Good newsTo say that it’s good news for the community

is a definite understatement, but one worth mentioning here, as there are those wary of government involvement at times, but to them we could say that this is certainly a positive turn of events. For those that were worried about gentrification and condos possibly going up, allowing the higher end of the financial spectrum awarded spots in the building, now, with these developments, the lesser-paid and even those that are in need can benefit from the space and as we said, it’s definitely a lot more positive for the community in the end.

In turn, they were at one time destined to become luxury condos, and only a small portion of the community would have benefited from that.

And in the end, the borough district forced its hand in a way, using its power for good, taking claim of its pre-emptive right to the building and spaces—and specifically that law and/or right gives the city official right to a property over an owner and at market price.

The right priceIt has been reported that the city is set to

pay 6.5 million dollars for the space, which is considerably higher than the estimated price the building was set at previously. Robert Beaudry, the executive committee member responsible for housing said: “We know that there is a lot of pressure on the price right now for residential land. We don’t have the obligation to buy it. But right now, yes, we pay a little higher than the price we evaluated the building, but the market was ready to put this price on.”

It has also been reported that the city had 60 days to approve the purchase as it stands.

A controversial act by previous owner

The previous owner, who wanted to build condos at the space, actually sent out eviction notices to its tenants, alerting the media that he wanted a building that was considered high-er-end, and all with his actions. That, as stated, did not sit well with the locals, nor as it turns out, members of the government.

Rosannie Filato, city councilor for Villeray, stated: “It’s going to allow us to preserve divers-ity: social diversity, economic diversity, and it’s going to allow, also, residents of Parc-Extension to continue to reside in their borough, in their district.”

Why are rents so high in the area?

Perhaps this is due to the new University of MTL Campus, and that’s exactly what mayor Fumagalli suggests in statements made to the press: “Because of the new campus, it is true that the prices have risen exponentially, and it is harder and harder to find reasonable rents.” This is definitely a reasonable response; we wonder only now that the pandemic hit and construction on the rest of the campus being seriously slowed down, should rents still be as high as they are?

How many units?More funding is still needed to further proceed

with renovations, but they promise about 40 units, which in the end is not a whole lot, but we hope that this project leads to many more like it, as it certainly is needed across the community, and perhaps even a lowering of the rents should probably be thought about, but maybe now we’re dreaming in Technicolor, but you never know.

A few details seem to still be hashed out, but the building will remain as is until the work gets started, and applications can be made—applic-ability for rights to live in the building will be certainly released by the government in due time, and when it does, we’ll have it for you, folks.

Solo Drum Studio—a portal into the depth of the 90s & right here in Park-ExThe studio’s been around for 24 years and right at the heart of the community, serving musicians and reminding them that a dedication to music is what they’re all about

I was hard at work on investigating for another story on Hutchison Street late last week, looking for entryway into a particular building that may have been locked down (at press time I still haven’t found a way in but rest assured that I will) when I happened upon a doorway marked “Studio.” I let myself in and still deep in thought, I walked in still wondering about my other story I almost missed the hallway leading into this studio I knew nothing about, but it was as I walked through it that it hit me all at once and I actually said aloud: “What is this place?”

Album covers of days gone by lined the walls to my left and to my right and once I made it to an open space and a counter built into the wall like a cubby hole and saw Alan Toussaint, his kind face smiling and welcoming, I knew I had landed on a story and an epic one at that, and all without meaning to.

Solo Drum Studio—a brief look backOwner, Alan Toussaint has been into music from

a very young age; his father was a musician—a piano player and music teacher. He got Alan into music at a very young age. A picture hangs in the studio that features young Alan blowing furi-ously into a trumpet on a stage from the distant past … an era when live music certainly played a

bigger part in the lives of many, especially when compared to today.

He used to work at Steve’s Music Store—yet another institution in this city, but he decided to move on from that, hoping to garner a little more for himself in the realm of music, the realm he decided to dedicate his life to.

And like many who have passed through the ‘employees only’ door at Steve’s, Alan took to play-ing gigs, and numerous ones at that. He definitely gained some steam in the music community and experience. He can be considered a multi-instru-

mentalist, specializing in drums, piano, percus-sion and the list certainly goes on.

He went back to school, claiming that it was his sister that helped guide him in the right direction; he got a business plan going and it came in the late nineties that the business was open. After seeing that there was a need at the time for a place for drummers all across the city to practice their art, and the business picked up. Slowly at first, but it certainly became the place to practice, and that success continued until 2008 when it suddenly hit a wall, a proverbial wall that affected many

businesses, especially the arts.Alan suggests that technology certainly had a

part in that slowing down of the business and with that wave of technology where musicians could buy cheap equipment and essentially record right out of hotel rooms, using drum tracks and linked microphones, business suffered for sure.

And along with that definitely came a genera-tion of musicians that didn’t have the dedication musicians once had. These days, musicians are satisfied with a few singles on Spotify and a video online that perhaps goes viral or gets close to it, and that seems to satisfy them, while musicians of the past and certain ones out there today, seem to have wanted more.

Alan wanted more, and he went for it, with everything he had.

He says the business did pick up again slightly around 2010; then it was a roller-coaster ride from that point on. And of course, then we were all hit with Covid-19.

The effects of the pandemic on Solo Drum StudioBusiness was certainly fair in January and before

Covid-19 became something that most in the western world had to worry about. Musicians came in and did their thing, taking good advan-tage of the services that Alan and his employees offered. But when the pandemic hit, all of that changed for the worse.

Alan Toussaint sits proud in the control room of the main recording studio with years of experience under his belt and a dedication to the musicians that have come to Solo Drum Studio and to those that have yet to discover his studio

Safely restarting activitiesEven when it is possible to resume activities, you must follow all of the relevant public health guidelines, including those provided by a health professional. Never end an isolation period early.

Be careful at school, in daycare and in educational childcare servicesIf your child shows symptoms, you will be asked to come and pick them up immediately. Call 1 877 644-4545and follow the guidelines that will be provided.

Parents and staff will be informed if a child that is part of the same class group tests positive for COVID-19. Anyone determined by the public health authorities to be at moderate or high risk will be contacted, removed from the school, daycare or childcare service, and tested.

Parents and staff will be quickly notifi ed if regional public health authorities deem it necessary to close down a facility or group.

If in doubt, stay homeAny child showing symptoms should remain at home and limit contact with others. If the symptoms persist for more than 24 hours, use the Self-Assessment Tool or call 1 877 644-4545 to fi nd out what to do.

Your child should not go to school if:

• Your local public health authority has told you to self-isolate.

• There is a risk of the child being infected or if you believe they may have been in contact with someone who has COVID-19.

• You are self-isolating for 14 days after travelling outside Canada.

Children who are self-isolating at home may still be able to access distance learning support. Contact the staff at your child’s school for more information.

If your child shows one or more of these symptoms for more than 24 hours or if you believe that a family member was exposed to COVID-19, use the COVID-19 Symptom Self Assessment Tool available at:

Québec.ca/decisioncovid19to get a recommendation on the next steps to take.

Andrés Fontecilla speaks against the reform set up by the PEQIn front of the courthouse this past Saturday, Andres Fontecilla speaks in favor and support of the immigrant students and front-line workers without permanent status

For all of you that are not familiar “The PEQ (Québec experience program), enables the selection of skilled workers who wish to settle in Québec permanently. This program is intended for Québec graduates and temporary foreign workers who are employed and who meet certain conditions, including demonstrating knowledge of spoken French (oral comprehension and oral production) at a skill level equal to or higher than level 7…”

Of course all of this is on the surface of the program. Seeing that recently there have been demonstrations all over the city from not only foreign students, but frontline workers who have an immigrant status, and there seems to be quite the hole in this program, and perhaps many at that, especially when you speak with Mr. Andrés Fontecilla, and the rest of the people at the Assemble Nationale Du Quebec.

Fontecilla using his influenceHe spoke in front of the Palais De Justice this

past Saturday and spoke loud and clear, wanting his message to be delivered to the government

that promised equal rights and privileges to all but in the end didn’t at all deliver.

In the end, Mr. Fontecilla has been a strong proponent for protecting those immigrants that come to Quebec in search of a new life, a new future, which in the end is what they’re promised. He has spoken at many protests and all in all the Assemble Nationale’s message is quite clear, as it was on Saturday in front of the courthouse: Things need to change.

Fighting for immigrantsSabrina Sawodny , Political Attaché, who has for

Mr. Fontecilla since 2018, explained their position on what’s going on. Essentially, the government isn’t holding up their end of the bargain—prom-ises made to these entering the province, and both students and workers alike. They find it unfair that these immigrants are allowed to work on the front lines of the pandemic—and dangerous font lines at that—but are on a temporary status. They feel that these men and women deserve permanent status and equal rights, especially after being on those aforementioned front lines and in such a dedicated way.

Same goes for the students. Essentially, promises have been broken and action needs to be taken.

He had to close and he did so, for two months, and the break he received during that time was definitely not enough of one. Many citizens in Canada got the CERB, but Alan still had to pay 25% of his rent at the studio, and it was still a hefty rent, especially when you consider there was nothing coming in at all—zero clients. He still had to pay his utilities and keep the equipment updated. He also was planning a new direction for the studio, so that when the pandemic passed us all buy, he’d be ready to offer his clientele some new and improved services: services that include a recording studio in which artists can record videos to go along with the music they put down. He is also in the process of setting up—along with a partner—a podcast studio, which in these times is pretty high in demand.

As it stands now … in the wake of pandemic

So, as it stands right now, they’re in full swing and ready to serve. Bands, musicians that are in need of a recording studio, a place to practice, or even shoot a video, Alan and Solo Drum Studio are there and where they’ve always been, ready to serve and help you get the sound you’re looking for. He’s more than keeping up with the protocols set up in place in order to prevent Covid-19 … sanitizers, disinfectants, masks, the whole deal … all that’s needed now are the dedicated musicians that are willing to brave this harsh new world in search of completing their life dreams, just like Alan Toussaint did when he was younger and starting out.

Are you out there?

◄ Continued from page 6

Behind the snack and supplies bar on the other side of the foyer—Alan and his staff have got you covered whether you need strings, a guitar or even have the munchies for a snack

The foyer screams the nineties … when music and the musicians that dedicated their lives to it sought their inspiration from the past, the legends and understood that to move forward we had to honor the past

The hallway just beyond the foyer, where multiple rooms and studios await, set up to the hilt with state of the art equipment
