LandscapeUllswater is referred to as England’s

most beautiful lake and for those of you

who have been lucky enough to visit it

is not hard to see why. Ullswater runs a

serpentine course shaped like the letter

‘Z’ through expansive vistas of Lakeland’s

greatest mountains, at the southern

reach the mighty Helvellyn at 3,117ft

(950m) crowns the South-Western

end of the valley, standing on a mighty

plateau approximately 9 miles (14.5km)

in length and 4.5 miles (7km) wide. Its

dramatic landscape is shaped by the

three distinctive rock types: the rugged

Borrowdale Volcanics, smoothness of the

Skiddaw Slates and gentler curves of the

Limestone hills.

I wandered lonely as a cloudTh at fl oats on high o’er vales and hills,When all at once I saw a crowd,A host, of golden daff odils;Beside the lake, beneath the trees,Flutt ering and dancing in the breeze.‘I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud’William Wordsworth

Romantic InsightThis landscape has inspired poets and

writers for centuries; perhaps one of

the most famous poems in the English

language, ‘The Daffodils’ by William

Wordsworth, was penned after a walk

along the lakeshore near Glencoyne. These

daffodils still frequent the shore in the

springtime. Ullswater was hugely significant

for Wordsworth and his work here shaped

some of the key ideas behind Romanticism.

‘Th ro’ all my Being, thro’ my pulse’s beat; You lie in all my many Th oughts, like Light,Like the fair light of Dawn, or summer EveOn rippling Stream, or cloud-refl ecting Lake.’‘Th e Presence of Love’ – Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Places to VisitThe spectacular Ullswater Valley, where the

foothills of Helvellyn rise from the lakeshore

and the legend of King Arthur remains untold.

Ullswater, often compared to the likes of Lake

Lucerne and referred to as England’s most

beautiful lake is simply the perfect destination,

for sublime natural beauty with some of the

most spectacular and dramatic scenery to

be found in England.

AIRA FORCE

A mountain stream of considerable volume tumbles

down the Aira Glen in a series of exquisitely beautiful

cascades before it tumbles some 70ft into the chasm

beneath. If you are lucky, on a sunny day, the light

refl ects on the spray to create the famous “Aira

Rainbow”. The prismatic eff ect of sunlight and water

creates a spectacular triple bow.

QUINTESSENTIAL VILLAGES

Askham, one of Cumbria’s

prettiest villages, a walk back

over Askham Fell affords

spectacular views of Ullswater

and Helvellyn, on clear days

you can see the Scottish

Borders and the Yorkshire

Dales.

EXPLORE MARTINDALE AND FUSEDALE

One of Lakeland’s least visited yet most

stunning valleys. Martindale is a real

hidden gem and home to one of the

oldest Red Deer herds in England dating

back to William the Conqueror.

VISIT THE CHURCHES

The thirteenth century

church of St Martin’s. A place

described by Wordsworth as

“the chapel, with its bare ring

of mossy wall” and “single

yew tree”. The Yew Tree in

question is believed to be in

the region of 1,300 years old.

‘A week spent quietly in the vicinity of Ullswater would be worth infi nitely more than a month’s rushing from place to place, with hardly time to impress one lovely picture on the mind before another succeeds it’
