This September sees the 75th anniversary of one of the most dramatic and audacious military operations of the entire Second World War: the Battle for the Bridges. Operation Market Garden, as it was named by the Allies, was an unsuccessful airborne assault on Nazi-controlled territory in the Netherlands and Germany. Its ultimate ambition was to secure key positions across the Rhine and thereby rapidly accelerate the end of the war. Its compelling story was later captured in the classic war film A Bridge Too Far – but is it properly understood?

On this special four-day tour, you will travel from London to some of the most significant sites of the battle and also hear from the brilliant historian Sir Antony Beevor, who will join readers in Arnhem itself for an exclusive dinner and lecture.

Accompanied by another military historian throughout, you will explore the true story of the Battle for the Bridges, the real-life stories behind the fighting, and what happened in its wake, with a special guest contribution from Sir Antony, who will draw on fascinating insights from researching his bestselling new book, Arnhem: The Battle for the Bridges, 1944.

Antony writes: “The British fascination for heroic failure has clouded the battle for Arnhem in myths, but there is so much more to this story than just the desperate attempt to get across the Rhine and finish the war in 1944. I hope you can join me in the city in the week of the battle’s 75th anniversary to hear about researching this dramatic episode in Second World War history – and the terrible reality behind it.”

I T I N E R A RY

Day 1 – DepartTravel by Eurostar from London St Pancras direct to Rotterdam then transfer by coach to Arnhem for your three-night stay. En route, visit the lovely city of Utrecht, laid out on a network of canals with a picturesque town square. Home to landmarks including Da Haar Castle and St Martin’s Cathedral, the city is one of the oldest in Holland, and you will have time to explore before continuing on to Arnhem. On arrival, enjoy a welcome reception, and an introductory lecture from your military tour guide, followed by dinner at the hotel. D

Day 2 – Arnhem, DrielYou start with the excellent Hartenstein Airborne Museum. Situated in the building that was used as the headquarters for the British 1st Airborne Division, the museum offers an excellent overview of Operation

T O U R H I G H L I G H T S

Market Garden. You will also focus on the evacuation of the British 1st Airborne Division across the Rhine. Of over 10,600 men in the Division, 2,071 would end up evacuated. You will also stop at the Lonsdale Church where many of those evacuated took shelter. Nearby is the famous house of Kate ter Horst. Used as a Regimental Aid Post to treat the wounded, it featured in the film A Bridge Too Far. You complete the day with a visit across the Rhine to Driel. Polish airborne troops landed here in a valiant attempt to reinforce the defenders of Oosterbeek and it was from here that the evacuation was organised. Return to the hotel for a drinks reception and evening talk from Sir Antony Beevor. Enjoy fascinating insights from Antony as he reveals stories from his time researching the book and imparts his

knowledge during this exclusive talk. Afterwards, have dinner at the hotel. B, D

Day 3 – Arnhem Bridge, Reichswald ForestVisit Arnhem Bridge where the men of the Parachute Regiment held out for four days while awaiting the arrival of the British 30 Corps. Visit Arnhem-Oosterbeek British Cemetery and the bridge over the Waal at Nijmegan. The defence of this bridge by SS Engineers is, in the opinion of some, the major reason for the failure of Market Garden. See the preserved bunkers at Grave Bridge and discover how the bridge was taken intact by men of the American 82nd Airborne Division. Cross the German border to visit the atmospheric Reichswald Forest. British and Canadian forces took this area as part of Operation Veritable during early 1945 and you will see the British

the four-star Van der Valk Hotel in Arnhem. Conveniently located close to the beautiful Hoge Veluwe National Park, rooms are elegantly decorated and include facilities such as separate bath and shower and a private balcony. You will enjoy two delicious dinners in the hotel’s restaurant.

Explore Utrecht and RotterdamYour tour will stop at the delightful city of Utrecht in the

cemetery here which is the largest in Germany. The final evening is free either to dine at the hotel or head into Arnhem to eat at a local restaurant. B

Day 4 – RotterdamThis is the anniversary ofthe beginning of the attack on Arnhem. This morning you will head to the Netherlands’ economic powerhouse, Rotterdam, for a brief

visit. A cruise around the port – the largest in Europe – is a great way to see the striking skyline of bold modern architecture. The former docklands area is now a fashionable district. Don’t miss the impressive indoor food market or the amazing ‘cube’ houses. Afterwards, you will board the local train to Brussels, before catching the Eurostar back to London. B

DATES October 18 – 21, 2019

Giuseppe Verdi was one of the few classical artists recognised during his lifetime and the annual Verdi festival in Parma celebrates his unique musical genius. On this exclusive three-day small-group tour you’ll attend two performances, including Franco Zeffirelli’s magnificent production of Aida and his earlier opera Luisa Miller, in the company of the classical music expert John Suchet.

John will join you to explore Verdi’s early years and give a private talk about the composer who forms the subject of his Classic FM book Verdi: The Man Revealed.

This is a wonderful tour for opera lovers who want to discover a region full of music and culture forever associated with one of Italy’s greatest operatic composers.

Expert insights from John Suchet The popular radio and TV presenter will join you in Parma and give a private talk about Verdi, his life and his works. John, who is also an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, will chart the life of Verdi, tracing his ascent from humble beginnings to a cultural icon of the ‘new Italy’ who had 200,000 bystanders lining the streets of Milan to say farewell when he died. An obsessive perfectionist, Verdi drove collaborators to despair even though his works were lauded from the start as dazzling

feats of composition and characterisation. From Rigoletto to Otello, La Traviatato to Aida, Verdi’s canon encompassed the full range of human emotion.

Discover Verdi’s ItalyYou’ll enjoy visits to important places in Verdi’s childhood such as the small town of Roncole Verdi, where he was born in October 1813, and the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, where he was baptised. The church is still home to the organ he played in his youth. In nearby Busseto you’ll visit Casa Barezzi home

to Verdi’s first concert and see the Renata Tebaldi Museum. You’ll also visit the National Verdi Museum inside the beautiful Villa Pallavicino where 27 works of the great composer are represented.

Tickets to the Verdi Festival Enjoy Verdi’s early opera Luisa Miller with John Suchet in a monumental space in the heart of Parma and hard-to-get tickets to the incredible Franco Zeffirelli production of Verdi’s Aida at Busseto’s Teatro Verdi.

Tour Parma’s

famous theatres At Teatro Regio you’ll enjoy a tour to learn about its history, which dates back to 1740. You’ll also visit the Teatro Farnese, one of the best examples of a wooden theatre still standing today. Created in the 1600s it was the largest theatre in the world, holding 4,500 people. Although almost destroyed during the Second World War, the theatre has been painstakingly restored so you can still admire the amazing detail in the wooden seating and walls.

Feedback for previous tours has been was overwhelmingly positive. “I learned more from Alastair Sooke in a weekend than I had previously learned in a whole term of classes,” one previous guest said. “The itinerary was perfect. Jam-packed with

Matisse’s Chapel of the RosaryTowards the end of his life, wracked with ill health, Matisse was

persuaded by a former model turned nun to decorate the chapel of her convent. The result of his designs for the building, stained glass, murals, metalwork and vestments is the modest, joyous Chapelle du Rosaire. As his life began to ebb, he was convinced that the chapel was his “masterpiece”, and many who visit feel the same.

This is a wonderful chance to join the art critic and Matisse expert Alastair Sooke on a fascinating journey into the art and artists of the south of France.

Towards the turn of the last century, the shores of the Côte d’Azur became a centre for one of the most influential artistic movements of the 20th century, with Matisse and Picasso at its heart.

Henri Matisse first visited the area in 1904 and Pablo Picasso too was a regular in the region. You will see the life-affirming paintings he made at this time, as well as the pottery he created, which rejuvenated the local ceramics industry.

The critic at large for The Telegraph, Alastair is a well known cultural broadcaster. He is the author of three art books published by Penguin – including, most pertinent to this itinerary, Matisse: A Second Life. In 2016, he sat on the British Council’s Venice Biennale Selection Committee and was a judge for the inaugural Hepworth Prize for Sculpture. He is on the Courtauld Association Committee.

The D-Day invasion of France by the Allies was the turning point of the Second World War. There are countless stories of heroism from those involved. It was 75 years ago this year that more than 150,000 young men were transported by sea and air to the beaches of Northern France.

While the single date of June 6, 1944 is forever etched in our memories, the largest seaborne invasion in history was months in the planning and on this special five-day tour, you will visit the important places relating to the operation.

Your journey will begin in Portsmouth, where you can see the actual wall maps used by the Allied commanders to plan Operation Overlord, while on a

tour of Southwick House. You will then cross the channel to see Pegasus Bridge in Caen. The mission to capture the bridge intact took place in the small hours of D-Day, as a unit of glider infantry led by Major John Howard dropped silently into France and captured the canal crossing to prevent German armour from attacking the eastern flank of the landings at Sword Beach.

In Caen, you will also hear one of two private talks from author Joshua Levine. Arromanches, the site of the incredible artificial harbour built by the Royal Engineers, is your next stop before you visit two of the historic beaches themselves, in Omaha and Gold Beach.

I T I N E R A RY

Day 1 – Portsmouth You will meet in Portsmouth in the morning and drive out of town to nearby Southwick House, where the landings were planned. Here, the wall map used to plot the course of Operation Overlord can still be seen. You will have lunch at the nearby village pub, that was frequented by General Dwight D. Eisenhower and General Bernard Montgomery. You will return to Portsmouth to visit The D-Day Story museum. This is an impressive museum that tells the incredible tale of the Normandy landings through personal accounts of those who were there. You will check in to your hotel before enjoying dinner. L, D

Day 2 – CaenToday, you will board the ferry for the crossing from Portsmouth to Caen. You will follow the journey of the operation to arrive in Caen in the mid-afternoon.

T O U R H I G H L I G H T S

The Allies’ plan was to capture Caen on the first day (along with Carentan, St Lô and Bayeux) but it would not be completely captured until July 21. En route to the hotel you will pay a visit the Pegasus Bridge and its museum. There you will learn of the glider mission to capture the bridge intact in the early hours of June 6, 1944, commanded by Major John Howard. You will continue on to your hotel where author Joshua Levine will join you to deliver an exclusive talk, after which you’ll enjoy dinner. B, L, D

Day 3 – Arromanches, BayeauxYou will spend the morning in Arromanches-les-Baines, where you will learn about the Mulberry harbour and pay a visit to the Musée Du Débarquement. The enormous artificial harbour, which was brought across in parts the day after D-Day and

constructed by the Royal Engineers at Arromanches, would be in use for the next 10 months, receiving around 6,000 tons of material every day. Adrian Cox, former member of the Arromanches Town Council and Ambassador for Remembrance, will meet you here to show you his own collection of memorabilia. Adrian will join you for lunch near the beach. You will then journey to Bayeux to pay our respects at Bayeux War Cemetery, the largest British Cemetery on French territory. No trip to Normandy is complete without viewing the Bayeux Tapestry, so you will pause your story of the landings to admire this piece. Before dinner this evening, Joshua Levine will join you to give another private talk. B, L, D

Day 4 – Omaha Beach Today, you will focus on the American efforts, beginning with Omaha beach and the Omaha

up to the Normandy landings. Allied Supreme Commander General Dwight D Eisenhower, Naval Commander-in-Chief Admiral Ramsay and Army Commander-in-Chief General Montgomery spent hours in the house working on the tiny details of Operation Overlord and you can see the large wall maps that were used in that planning that are still on the walls.

Beach Memorial Museum. Enjoy a picnic on the beach before continuing on to Pointe du Hoc for a view over the beaches to gain a perspective on the scale of the operation on that fateful day. On the way back to the hotel, enjoy some free time in Bayeux. B, L, D

Day 5 – Gold BeachOn your final morning you will make your way

to the Lounges-sur-Mer battery and visit Gold Beach. Before your ferry home, you will have time for a final visit to Le Grand Bunker, also known as The Atlantic Wall Museum. Housed in a Nazi Bunker, this museum displays equipment and memorabilia telling the story of Hitler’s Atlantic Wall and those who had awaited the invasion of France. B, L

Joshua Levine has written seven bestselling histories including Operation Fortitude, which chronicles the web of deception that the Allies spun to mislead the Nazis as to where the D-Day landings were to occur.
