BACKGROUND AND ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE

Gibsons Community Building Society (“GCBS”) is a volunteer-led not-for-profit organization established in 2014 to build and operate Gibsons Public Market, a community project that inspires and supports economic activities in the region. The public market includes local small businesses, public gathering spaces, and an inspiring marine education center. It is a destination for residents and visitors to convene, learn, and enjoy local food, fresh produce, art, and entertainment.

The Nicholas Sonntag Marine Education Centre (NSMEC) has its own Board of Directors and operates as a separate charity; however, the Executive Director of GCBS assumes overall responsibility along with the GCBS Board for the operation of the NSMEC.

GCBS is supported through strategic partnerships with the Town of Gibsons, Community Futures, and the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation, as well as volunteers, corporate and community partners, donors, and funders.

MISSION: To build a healthy, caring, and thriving community through vibrant community gathering spaces, a bustling local market, and an inspiring marine education centre.

ROLE OVERVIEW

Gibsons Community Building Society is currently accepting applications for an experienced Executive Director with a passion for the Sunshine Coast and building sustainable rural communities.

Reporting to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (“ED”) is the strategic and operational leader of Gibsons Community Building Society (“GCBS”), and is responsible for managing all aspects of the organization’s internal operations and outward facing activities, ensuring the organization remains aligned with the mission, vision, and strategic priorities and goals established by the Board. As spokesperson and steward for the organization, the ED will facilitate key stakeholder, government, donor, volunteer, and grantee relationships to strengthen partnerships, opportunities, and community impact.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The Executive Director’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following areas:

• Strategic planning;

• Board support and governance;

• Fundraising and development;

• Community leadership and engagement;

• Leadership and HR;

• Financial management; and

• Program development and facilities management.

The Board has identified a few of the key opportunities and challenges for the new Executive Director:

• Providing strong fundraising leadership to increase fund development and partnerships for the organization;

• Continuing to grow and develop the organization and bring its vision to a reality;

• Developing strong relationships with a large number of external stakeholders and effectively managing their expectations;

• Supporting a small staff team and large number of volunteers and helping create a motivational and collaborative culture;

• Supporting a future shift toward the Board being more of a Governance Board; and

• Understanding and embracing the shifting demographics on the Sunshine Coast.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

REPORTS TO: The Executive Committee of the Board of Directors

DIRECT REPORTS: The Executive Director currently directly supervises the Manager of Community Impact and Facility Rentals (GCBS), the Manager of Operations and Facilities (GCBS and NSMEC), and the Manager and Curator, Nicholas Sonntag Marine Education Centre (NSMEC). The ED also oversees all staff members, contractors, and volunteers serving GCBS.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The ED is a visionary and energetic leader, with strong relationship and team building skills, a passion for community development and environmental stewardship, and a strong desire to continue progressing the organization through the start-up phase. They are authentic, confident, and act with conviction to help realize the organization’s mission and vision and share its story in both local and broader communities. They will have experience working effectively with representatives from non-profit, government, and corporate organizations, and will have demonstrated knowledge of non-profit management and fund development. This role requires excellent interpersonal communication and a commitment to building a positive and effective organizational culture.

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

The Executive Director has the following qualifications:

1. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• A bachelor’s or master’s degree in business, non-profit management, community economic development, or a related degree, or the equivalent professional experience;

• At least 5 years of senior management professional experience in a non-profit organization;

• At least 3 years of senior fundraising and fund development experience;

• Significant board development, marketing/branding, and financial management experience;

• Experience working with small businesses is an asset; and

• Experience working with First Nations and environmental campaigning is an asset.

• Strong people management skills, including recruiting and retaining a diverse team, supporting staff professional development, and collaborating, mentoring and empowering staff;

• Excellent relationship building skills with an ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, and ability to expand the demographic and geographical scope of external stakeholders;

• Strong analytic, organization, and problem-solving skills, which support and enable sound decision making;

• Strong change management skills and ability to help grow an organization;

• Ability to cultivate a strong and cohesive culture across the organization;

• Strong conflict management skills, and ability to negotiate persuasively and achieve consensus amongst differing opinions; and

• Outstanding presentation and communication skills and the ability to be an outgoing spokesperson, relationship builder, and fundraiser.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Gibsons Community Building Society is a dynamic work environment and the Executive Director will be engaged in a diverse range of programs and responsibilities. As a fairly new organization, it is still in a start-up phase and the Executive Director will be highly involved in building and maintaining relationships with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders and representing the organization to the overall community through passionate and engaging story-telling skills.

The standard work week is 40 hours and additional evening, weekends, and overtime hours as needed to accommodate activities such as Board meetings and representing the organization at public events.
