  • Executive Director

There are precious few musicals that stir my soul as deeply as this remarkable show, The Color Purple. Resilience, forgiveness, and the triumph of the human spirit are at its heart – and what a beautiful heart it is! I’m so proud to bring this production back to the RMTC stage, especially during the month of February.

But The Color Purple isn’t RMTC’s last stop in the quest to showcase art as a catalyst for uniting our community. Next month, we’ll launch our inaugural Human Rights New Works Festival with a full production of the Alabama premiere of Alabama Story, and readings of four brand new works centered around human rights – Everything That’s Beautiful, The Ballad of Klook & Vinette, Sam’s Room, and Mother Emanuel. Check out show descriptions and the weekend schedule at www.rmtchumanrights.org. I hope you’ll join us for a celebration, conversation, and commemoration of that which can truly bring us all together – our humanity.

Composer of the classics “Get Here,” “If Only For One Night,” and the Grammy-nominated “Piano In The Dark,” Brenda’s songwriting prowess and chameleon-like ability to shift between musical genres and combine styles trumpeted ovations in 2005 with the opening of the Tony Award-winning hit Broadway musical The Color Purple, for which she, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray co-wrote the music and lyrics. Working with Madonna, he wrote and produced many of her top-ten recordings, including “Angel,” “Into the Groove,” “Papa Don’t Preach,” “True Blue” and “Express Yourself.” Performing with Breakfast Club, he earned a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist and a top-ten single. His teen years were spent studying classical piano and saxophone. During this time, Yarbrough also began studying jazz, hip-hop, R&B, rock, and gospel music, which isthe primary stylistic inspiration for his new self-titled album. During this time, he became the pianist/saxophonist for hishome church, played lead tenor saxophone in the Birmingham Youth Jazz Ensemble, and attended high schoolat the Alabama School of Fine Arts. Yarbrough’s unique way of hearing, seeing, and interpreting life is the focus of his debut album, “4 Right Turns”. Over the years, during his artistic voyages, he has gradually familiarized himself with all musical styles and several instruments, earning him the title “utility man” by one of his jazz professors because of his versatility. He is a man with a “will that exceeds that of most people.” This gifted musician, singer, songwriter, arranger, scorer, and producerhas captured the hearts of many, and his “never give up” mentality is what will help him fulfill his goals as he travels the world.

  • RMTC is continually expanding our reach and impact in the Birmingham community – and even the state of Alabama. But, this growth must be fueled with fiscal stability and long-term sustainability. To that end, RMTC has established a planned giving initiative named for an incredible woman, Carolyn King, who gave generously to RMTC during her lifetime and also planned for those gifts to continue past her time on earth. She was a blessing to so many and now serves as a shining example of dedication to the generations to come. The Society that bears her name is comprised of those who have included RMTC in a will retirement plan, charitable lead trust, charitable remainder trust, or life insurance policy that contributes to RMTC upon their passing. Won’t you join these donors in planning now for RMTC’s vital work into the future? Contact RMTC’s development office for more information. If you have made those plans, please let us know. We’d be grateful to include you in the Society!
