This is an exciting time to be part of
Northwestern Law, annually ranked
among the top U.S. law schools by
U.S. News and World Report. We are
implementing a strategic plan that
responds to the increasing complexity,
globalization, and competitiveness of
the legal profession. As globalization
and competition have increased in both
business and the legal services, so has
the need for lawyers who have a strong
understanding of the global market. We
understand that whether you are working
in Madrid, London, Tokyo, or New York,
the conventions and practices relevant
to cross-border projects are largely the
same and based on the Anglo-American
common law. We have, therefore,
partnered with one of Europe’s top
business schools to develop the
Executive LLM Program and expose
practicing lawyers from Europe and
beyond to this emerging world.
Instituto de Empresa is a pioneer in
training lawyers to serve corporate
clients, whether as practitioners in a
law firm or in-house counsels in a
corporate legal department. The
practice of law in a business context
increasingly requires specialized
practical training not only to master
the latest developments in purely legal
fields but also to gain competence
in business administration in order to
satisfy clients’ needs. As a leading
European school with a global
outlook, our commitment to innovation
and the spirit of entrepreneurship is
key to responding to the needs of a
fast changing environment. Our
partnership with one of the top U.S.
law schools gives us this unique
opportunity to offer practicing lawyers
an opportunity to earn an American
LLM and a certificate in business
administration.

The business world and legal profession have undergone radical changes over the past
20 years. Today, business and legal practices are not based solely on culture or geography
—they are universal and often based on Anglo-American and common law conventions
and rules. International lawyers who master the principles of U.S. law and understand
its role in business will succeed no matter where in the world their offices are located
or where their clients do business.
By combining unique strengths in law and business and by making use of the latest
technologies for classroom and online instruction, the Executive LLM Program offered
by Northwestern University School of Law in partnership with Instituto de Empresa allows
participants to earn the LLM degree and certificate in business administration in one
academic year, while continuing to meet their professional obligations.
The Executive LLM Program offers legal professionals trained in jurisdictions outside the
United States a unique opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in business administration
and the common law with minimal career interruption.
Participants will earn both a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from a top U.S. law school
— Northwestern University School of Law — and a certificate in business administration
from Europe’s leading business school — Instituto de Empresa.
The Executive LLM Program provides today’s lawyer practicing in the global market with
the fundamental tools necessary to advance to the next level of professional success.

The program is intended primarily for practicing
lawyers with at least three years of experience in
a corporate legal department or law firm.

average of 71⁄2 years of experience, in law firms
and companies based in Europe, Latin America,
Africa and the Persian Gulf.
Participants withSubstantial Experience
The Executive LLM Program provides professional development and training for lawyers and business
executives who are poised to seek positions of maximum responsibility in the near future. In-depth knowledge
of business and the U.S. legal system is vital not only to success in their professional careers, but also to the
success of the companies or firms in which they work.
Internationally Renowned Scholars,Practitioners and Teachers
Program participants have the opportunity to establish one-on-one relationships with distinguished scholars
and leading practitioners in law and business administration, all of whom are considered some of the world’s
best teachers in their respective fields.
Business executives and managers who deal
often with legal or regulatory situations also
benefit from participation in the Executive LLM
program. For this reason, non-law graduates may
apply for admission as candidates for the Master
of Science in Law (MSL) degree.
The language of instruction is English for the
entire Executive LLM Program, including both the
Madrid and Chicago study periods.

Bringing perspectives from a variety of legal systems and business cultures, these students challenged
each other and me with intriguing questions and brilliant arguments. It was remarkable to see so
many approaches to solving business legal issues. The high quality of intellectual interaction among
such a diverse and talented set of students is unlike any other program I’ve seen.

by corporate clients.

Convenient and Efficient Time Schedules
Traditional LLM programs require significant travel
and time away from work. The Executive LLM
Program provides participants with an
opportunity to earn an LLM and certificate in
business administration with little career
interruption. Alternating periods of classroom
and online instruction allow for professional
education and practical training while participants
continue to work.
The Executive LLM Program offers participants a top-quality learning experience based on three pillars of
international education:
- The Anglo-American model of common law
- Comparative aspects of European law
- Select subjects in business administration
The program is divided into alternating periods of classroom and online instruction, with travel to IE’s campus
in Madrid and to Northwestern Law’s campus in Chicago. Two different program structures allow participants to
choose the plan that will best help them meet their professional obligations and goals.

The Executive LLM Program is providing me with
the tools and skills I believe a lawyer needs in the
increasingly complex and truly international world
of legal practice. IE and Northwestern Law are
giving me the chance to dramatically improve my
professional training by having access to superb
professors and sharing my experiences with
extremely qualified students from all over the
world. Both institutions have been able to create
a stimulating learning environment with an
international spirit. I certainly believe I will become
a better lawyer at IE and Northwestern Law.

I was very apprehensive about joining the EXLLM
program offered by Instituto de Empresa and
Northwestern for the simple fact that I was not a
lawyer. Although I do have a great deal of legal
experience I thought that I would be overwhelmed
by the content and my classmates. To my surprise,
I have been welcomed with open arms by the
host institutions and by my classmates. As one
of two MBA’s in the class our contribution is very
much appreciated by our lawyer classmates and
instructors, and we feel very much at home. The
class came together very quickly and I feel has
established the type of relationship during the
short time of the program that it takes generally
years to build. Everyone who has been part of
the program including the institutions, professors,
administration and classmates has been far
beyond my expectations. I feel that I will certainly
get the type of education that I was looking for in
order to move me forward in my future career.

Some states allow foreign-trained lawyers to sit for the bar examination, subject to certain conditions. Among
these states, several give varying weight to the fact that a candidate has an LLM degree from an ABA-approved
law school. Often an LLM is just one factor in a case-by-case analysis of each applicant’s educational and professional
qualifications.
If you are interested in taking a bar examination in the United States, you need to consult the Bar Examiners in
the pertinent state before you enroll in any LLM Program. They are the only authoritative source for up-to-date
information and advice in each state.

firms or companies recognize that their participants are lawyers or executives of outstanding promise and
potential, who will immediately begin to contribute the knowledge and skills they acquire during the

Participants in the Executive LLM Program are eligible to apply for a number of financing alternatives to
