Supersedes EO 1100 issued in February 2015
Purpose
Clarify General Education (GE) requirements
Ensure equitable opportunity for student success
Streamline graduation requirements

Article 2 Fulfilling CSU GE Breadth Requirements and Article 4 Subject Area Distributions
Effective for Fall 2018 Freshman and Transfer admits (GE Catalog Year = 2018/19 and later)
However, some changes will also be retroactive for continuing students (GE Catalog year = 2017/18 and earlier)
RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT
Students must complete 9 units of GE
GE Catalog year = 2017/18 and earlier: students must complete minimum 9 units (lower or upper division) in GE at SDSU
GE Catalog year = 2018/19 and later: students must complete minimum 9 units in upper division GE within the CSU
UNIT LIMITATIONS
All GE Catalog years
Elimination of the following maximum unit requirements in GE:
Maximum 7 units in one department in Area II. Foundations and Area IV. Explorations
Maximum 10 units in one department in Area II. Foundations, Area III. American Institutions, and Area IV. Explorations
Maximum 12 units in one department
UNIT LIMITATIONS
Example
With the elimination of the maximum unit requirements in one department, a student can take the following courses to satisfy the respective GE areas:
ANTH 101 (3 units) Human Biocultural Origins Area IIA2.Foundations-Life Sciences
ANTH 102 (3 units) Intro to Socio-Cultural Anth. Area IIB.Foundations-Social and Behavioral Sciences
ANTH 355 (3 units) Exploring Primate Behavior Area IVA.Explorations-Natural Sciences
ANTH 353 (3 units) Sustainability and Culture Area IVB.Explorations-Social and Behavioral Sciences.
ANTH 422 (3 units) Music and Culture Area IVC.Explorations-Humanities
UNIT LIMITATIONS
All GE Catalog years
Elimination of the maximum 3 units of GEOG 101, 103, and ANTH 101 in IIA. Foundations-Natural Sciences
Students are now able to take GEOG 101 or 103 to satisfy Physical Sciences and ANTH 101 to satisfy Life Sciences
FOUNDATIONS-SOCIAL AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES
GE Catalog year = 2017/18 and earlier: Students must complete 2 courses taken from two different departments (6 units)
GE Catalog year = 2018/19 and later: Students must complete 3 courses taken from two different departments (9 units)

AMERICAN INSTITUTIONS
All students will continue to be required to satisfy the American History, U.S. Constitution, and California State and Local Government
AMERICAN INSTITUTIONS
All GE Catalog years:
American Institutions courses are now included in:
Area IIB. Foundations-Social and Behavioral Sciences and
Area IVB. Explorations-Social and Behavioral Sciences
Maximum of 2 American Institutions courses can apply toward GE

EXPLORATIONS
Students will continue to need 9 units, with one course satisfying Cultural Diversity
GE Catalog year = 2017/18 and earlier: Students complete 9 units in Natural Sciences, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Humanities OR complete the specialized GE pattern for their major (e.g. Engineering)
GE Catalog year = 2018/19 and later: All students must complete 9 upper-division units according to the following area distribution: Natural Sciences, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Humanities
Specialized GE patterns for students in Engineering and Nursing have been eliminated
EXPLORATIONS
Previously students could not double count a course in their major department and Explorations
Now, students in all GE Catalog years may double count all major courses in GE
EXPLORATIONS
Example: Psychology Major
PSY 340 (3 units) Social Psychology
Will satisfy IVB. Explorations-Social and Behavioral Sciences and will satisfy Psychology major requirement
FUTURE GE CHANGES
Future GE changes effective for Fall 2019 Freshman and Transfer Admits: Area IIC. Foundations-Humanities and Area E. Lifelong Learning and Self Development
Area IIC. Foundations-Humanities
GE Catalog year = 2019/20 and later: students will be required to complete 9 units
GE Catalog year = 2018/19 and earlier: students are required to complete 12 units
Area E. Lifelong Learning and Self-Development
New GE area
GE Catalog year = 2019/20 and later: students will be required to complete 3 units
