Exemption, Equivalence and Recognition of Prior Learning –

Guidance for YMCA Awards centres

YMCA Awards Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (all contexts) (QCF)

N.B. This is a ‘common unit’ qualification

Equivalency

The qualifications below contain units which are equivalent to those in the YMCA Awards

L2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (QCF). Learners who have already achieved any of the

units in any of the qualifications below within the past 3 years need not repeat either the

learning or the assessment in the YMCA Awards qualification. Instead the credit already

achieved may be transferred to the YMCA Awards qualification.

Where the prior achievement is no longer current, i.e. not within the past 3 years, the centre

should satisfy themselves that the learner’s knowledge and/or skills are still current; this

may be determined through questioning or evidence of CPD.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL is a process that allows learners with related learning and/or skills, but without

appropriate certification, to proceed directly to assessment; it does not negate the

requirement for assessment and therefore credit can be awarded for achievement and

funding may be valid.

Where a learner has a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (NQF) in one discipline, and

wants to achieve the YMCA Awards Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (QCF) in

another (or the same) discipline, prior achievement of any of the NQF qualifications below

may be considered for RPL.

FAQs

Question Answer

1. If a learner has the Level 3 Certificate in

Advanced Fitness Instructing (NQF) or

the Level 3 Certificate in Personal

Training (NQF), are they exempt from the

Anatomy and physiology for exercise

and health (APEH) unit in L3 QCF

qualifications?

Yes (as long as the whole NQF qualification

has been achieved, rather than just the

Exercise and fitness knowledge (EFK) unit).

But the learner will not achieve credit for the

QCF APEH unit, and the centre may not be

able to claim funding.

Alternatively, the centre/learner may

decide that RPL is more appropriate. In this

case, credit will be awarded and funding may

be valid.

2. If a learner has L3 Exercise and fitness

knowledge (EFK) (NQF) unit are they

exempt from the L3 Anatomy and

physiology for exercise and health

(APEH) (QCF) unit?

No, unless they have achieved the EFK unit

as part of a whole qualification – see Q1

above.

3. Is the L2 NVQ Diploma in Instructing

Exercise and Fitness an acceptable pre-

requisite for the YMCA Awards L3

Certificate in Personal Training, in place

of the L2 Certificate in Fitness

Instructing?

Yes because the NVQ is mapped to the

same NOS as the L2 Certificate and is a

bigger qualification than the L2 Certificate;

thus it satisfies more than the required

knowledge and skills of the pre-requisite.

4. If a learner has the YMCA Awards L3

Certificate in Personal Training (QCF),

are they ‘exempt’ from units 1, 2, 3 and

4* of the YMCA Awards L3 Diploma in

Pilates (QCF)?

* These are the L3 A&P plus the other 3

L2 mandatory units

Yes, this is a case of ‘equivalence’; the

Certificate in Personal Training meets the

requirements of these units because it

contains the equivalent units.
