OUR TWELVE YEARSA newspaper, fe like no other article of merchandise that

you purchase; in no other purchase that you make is there the, sense that y o u have secured something necessary, yet unnecessary; something friendly, yet something alien and strange; something transitory, yet something vastly per- manent.

Today on our twelfth anniversary, the Commercial Leader is a sort of note book in which has been recorded a dozen years of Lyndhurst’s life. It is more than a newspaper's anniversary; it is Lyndhurst's.

Twelve years of publication. A newspaper gains in swif- ness as it goes along. The next dozen years should be brighter and more golden. Yet poignant and sharp is the regret that none of the Coming twelve years will be like" the twelve that have already gone. They were the golden years, years in which friendships were made, and in which friendships ripened. Wc will make more, but the initial friends, come in the time of need, are impressed upon us large and un- • forgettable. r.,„ ^

Wc of the Commercial Leader have always tried to make the newspaper one of which the community in which it is published could be proud. The errors have-been natural errors, if they have beep many, blame them on the circumstances, not the desire. -

Perhaps, we looked upon our reflection with prejudiced eyes, (put we feel that we have done the best we could and a good job.

One of the difficulties in publishing a weekly newspaper is the attitude with which it is regarded. Here, in a metropolitan community, *we are treated each day by the greatest of the world’s newspapers. Before them, certainly we pale. As a newspaper Wf# do tint* deserve comparinfin wnh«th<i ■ metropolitan dailies. Yet, as Lyndhurst newspapers, the dailies do not deserve comparison with the Commercial Leader, either. r ~-Our sole purpose is to give to Lyndhurst the township

news in as comprehensive and Comprehensible Inrm as possible When we have failed to do that, we have failed in our function. We do not call it failure because alongside the great daily newspapers we seem drab'and shabby. We glory in our calling, in the feeltng that we have a niche in which to circulate, a niche in which we are every hit important in our own way-as the huge metropolitan newspapers are in theirs.

What can we do to improve? We constantly add features. - We strive to make our coverage of news complete. We attempt to interpret the news as best we can in the editorial aJumns. We are proud that our reputation for printing only the news that will He of benefit to Lyndhlirst and its pet >ple is still strong.aad unsullied.

Closer attention to the details of publication we arc,try- ing to give A more uniform and workable policy we areattempting -te devm .- _____ v \.

In short, our purpose u to make the Commercial Leader Lyndhurst's newspaper.

Steadily increasing circulation signifies our policies are ineeting with favor throughout the township. It signifies, ton, the weight of the newspaper in public regard has increased. For news or advertising messages, the Oommer- cial Leader stands as an imp, trailed medium in Lyndhurst.

Acclaim from both sides of the Republican party in Bergen ( xHinty h*» already greeted the election of John II Zabrinkie .is

chairman of the party's xounty committee. The universality of the applause is excellent support for those who saul the Wyckoff lawyer i* the. man «i hrmR the party into the November ek\ tkm with a unified and powerful fnmt.

A glancc at Jud^ Zahrislue's career will show why. He ha* always worked lor what he ha* received. First a pia»r school teacher working ht* way through normal school and then Uw Jchuol. Then a poor but htme« lawyer. Then an ashiatant prosecutor of the plea*. Then a )odgr the yrnineest in the county In that story is the vibrant smry of America, of opportunity and strong men wh»> ctsjkl sicie it.

The dominant ihwactenstics of the new chairman are his honestly and sincerity. There wiB be no traversing tbe.midjle pavement with him a* ihe chairman of the commit tee Politiesi i the a.'mmittee may he «peeted to be one way. and always;^, S ." f -tne way, and built nn a straight line. 1 — •* ‘

3 0 R in s t a n c e , t h e r e was Pete Gaffney, third baseman on the s t r o n g e s t o f o u r earlier teams. From descriptions we have

A h i t t e r , a r u n n e r , a thrower, a player who sensed plays, jaffney c o u ld p l a y any position, frequently was utilized in sev- ral a g a m e

ecently said,, >ut. He posed magnificently at the plate, he swung without ef ort, yet so swiftly it was hard to see the arc his bat made: He j cam ollowed through beautifully."

James Woods adds to the description.* * *

“Gaffney,” said Woods, “seemed able to sense without look- ng, just what to do and to do it without effort.

•" ** I s a w P e t e p l a y a foul ball once. It went toward t h e grand tand. A t t h e c r a c k o f the bat, Gaffney Was on his w a y t o the ;rand s t a n d . It w a s t o land somewhere near the the top. With- >ut pausing, and without looking, Gaffney, in his spike shoes,aced o v e r th o s e planks, raced up toward the top. ()n thc lastilank o f t h e p l a t f o r m he poised on one foot, with his gloved land o u t s t r e t c h e d — and he caught the ball."

Woods a lso , tells of the time Gaffney slid under J a c k Mullm'segs to snare a fly ball. Mullin, one of the best of the township satchers, ran in for a high pop fly. Somehow, he misjudged thely. When it s e e m e d the ball was to fall outside his reach, Gaf-ney dove between the catcher's legs and got the ball

FORT LEE IN m TRIUMPH

CLUBLocala Unable to Get Going • Aa Miieski la Driven

From Pitching Box

A Fort Lee team that was just too strong Sunday whipped the Coltunbus Club tossers 11 to 4 at Fort Lee Field. The Fort Lee nine packed too many guns. The Columbus Club did not carry its usual equipment. So the score wss 11 to 4.

No team is going to Fort Lee and put on the ragged exhibition the Columbians favored Fort Lee with—and get away with it.

Mouse Miieski found the weather too cold and too bleak. He was driven from the mound after four and two third innings of pitching. He was rocked off the hill by solid blasts.. Some of the balls those Fort Lee players hit were not found that day..

were a bit peeved over the vast amount of publicity you were receiving. To tell die truth, we didn’t even know tha t you were playing this sea- son. As a matter of fact, we were informed Tuesday that you had disband- ed.

Now if you really want publicity, why don’t you do what your old s p a r ring partner, Marty Dolan does? M r. Dolan hands me the box-scores of his games, won, lost or tied
