Monday 17TH August

Prime Cattle to 232ppk and £1575 Barren Cows to 175ppk and £1259

Larger numbers forward on Monday which certainly didn’t do anything to dampen demand as trade for all on offer (and

especially for those top end sorts) sold to another blistering trade. Best prime rose to a very decent high of 232ppk and

£1495 given for a quality 646kg Limousin heifer from Tom and Hannah Wotton of Moretonhampstead who also sold an

equally good 682kg Limousin steer for 231ppk and a colossal £1572. Next in line was RJ Macbean and Sons of Plymstock

with a smart 590kg South Devon heifer which drew a creditable 228ppk and £1342 closely followed by more tremendous

prime from Reg Wills of Ashburton who sold the best of his grand run of Aberdeen Angus steers (by pedigree Angus sires)

to 227ppk and £1575. Keith and Hilary Harvey of Bovey Tracey saw good returns, firstly for a 660kg Blonde steer which

made 225ppk and £1495 then their 550kg heifer of the same good breeding drew 224ppk and realised £1238, they also

sold a dairy bred British Blue steer (696kg) for 197ppk and £1367. Brian Warne of Manaton sold a super 650kg Aberdeen

Angus heifer for 216ppk and £1405 with a pen of four Angus steers from Robert and William Reddaway of South Tawton

averaging over 208ppk and Hereford steers from Graham Tancock of Broadclyst fetched to 209ppk and £1378. Twenty

prime cattle over the 200ppk mark this week with several good types around the 190 to 199ppk mark and lessor sorts 175

to 189ppk. Barren cows very much wanted again this week with the very best reaching 175ppk and £1259 for an eye

catching South Devon cross cow from David Heath of Sherford with straight South Devon’s reaching 142ppk and £1177 for

Brian Warne. Red Limousin barreners saw 161ppk and £1078 for Brian Vallance of Bickington followed by further smart

Limousin cows at 154ppk for Harry Davis of Chagford. Charolais from David Heath reached 154ppk and £1099 whilst

Simmentals from Roger Blackler, Modbury rose to 139ppk and £1155. Blonde cows topped 143ppk for Mary Curtis of

Cadeleigh as did Angus bred sorts from JJ and DM Goodenough of Camelford. Thirty barren cows averaged just short of

130ppk

Prime Lambs to £106 & 221ppk Cull Ewes to £108 & Rams to £120

A larger than expected offering of 1360 lambs were a very mixed show and sold at a lower level to last week but an overall average of 200ppk and SQQ of 202ppk was achieved, some 27p in front of this week last year. Top money of £106 went to smart Texel’s from Doug Alford of Exeter and at 48kg took the top price per kilo at 221ppk. Other into three figures included Dave Pollard of Black Dog with heavies at £103.20, Adam Garthwaite of Torrington at £101.50 and both Mark Harvey of Slapton and Dave Chapple of Cadeleigh at £100. Six further pens of 47-51kgs between £98 and £99.50 and 46kgs to £96.50 for Rodney Cleave of Denbury. 45kgs to £94.20 for Vennelle partnership of Down St Mary as 44kgs sold to £93.80 for Joy Churchill of Axminster and £93.20 for Tom Yandle of Mamhead who both sold 43kgs at £93 or 216ppk. 42kgs to £89 for Kevin Dinnis of Tedburn St Mary and 40kg shorn lambs to £84 for Jeff Harvey of Hennock. Next best per kilo were Les Palmer of Chillington with smart 37kg lambs at 219ppk and £81. SQQ back 4p at 202ppk.

.

Far more forward than anticipated with 833 cull ewes and 41 rams, but trade was no different with Angus & Sue Howie of Meeth dominating the top prices with Texel and Texel x ewes at £108, £103.50 & £103 as well as a big Suffolk ram at £120. More rams from Derek Arnold of Morchard Road at £105, R & P Farming of Mamhead at £100 and majority of others £75 to £93. Crossbred meat ewes trading from £80 to £89, three or four pens of the thickest, heaviest Mule ewes into the early to mid £80’s and hill ewes often into the £60’s with strength. Grazing ewes keenly contested and often £50 to £65 depending on breed and size whilst smaller hill bred ewes and Easycare ewes were £30 to £45. Average of £56 is more a reflection of the quality than the trade which looks to be taking no harm for the middle of August.

£83 (177ppk). Overweights to £85 for AJ Carter of Dawlish and £81.50 for Paul West of Holbeton. Other 50-52kg

lambs selling at £85 for Tripp Bros & Sons of Dunsford £84.20 for Tony Pickard of South Molton, £82.80 for Ken

price per head for 44kgs from Keith Milton of Pennymoor who also claimed top price per kilo when his two pens of

smart 41kg lambs rose to 180 & 178ppk or £73.80 & £72.80 respectively. A great line up of well finished light lambs

from 28 to 39kgs saw top per head of £66 achieved by both Blackaton Manor Farms of Widecombe with 39kg

Cheviots and also of 38kg Suffolk crosses from Abel Bros of Tavistock who also parted with 33kg Welsh lambs at

£56.20, 31kg hill lambs at £54, 30kgs at £53.20 (177ppk) and a large pen of 28kg Scotties at £48.20. Overall average is

just a penny better at 170ppk.

367 CULL EWES & 20 RAMS/WETHERS

A short entry of just under 400 cull sheep sold with a better feel to the trade as mule and other medium weight ewes

were noticeably dearer than seen in a long time. Best crossbred ewes to £90 for a pair of Black Texels from Tracey

Pike of Luppit, £89.50, £88.50 & £86 for penfuls of strong Suffolk crosses from Tom Yandle of Mamhead and £87 for

similar from Tim Whitley of Widecombe. Others £75 to £84 depending on breed, condition and weight. Best mules as

mentioned looking £6-£9 dearer on the week with two pens selling at £77.50 & £74.50 for Brad Simmons of

Thorndon Cross, £76.50 for Ellen Yandle of Mamhead and a meated run from Sam Ursell of Tedburn St Mary sold to

£76, £74.50, £73 & £72.50. Hill ewes fewer in number and often £30 to £40 with no real strength present and very

few lots sold under £25. Rams a touch stronger trade too with Brad Simmons also topping these with a weighty

Suffolk selling at £99 followed by AJ Carter with a Texel at £92.50 and B Moseley of Hittisleigh realised £89. All cull

sheep averaged £62, which is up £10 on the week, half of the lift is due to quality, the other half is the strength of

trade.

Prime & Cull sheep Mortality and Rejection Insurance As of 1st April 2019 a levy of 15p (12p plus VAT) will be deducted from all prime and cull sheep sold at Exeter on a Monday to cover deaths and meat rejections associated with slaughter stock from this sale. There is an exception to this levy if a vendor is deemed to have an epidemic of cysticercus-ovis or similar, but in this unlikely event the auctioneer will liaise with the vendor in question.
