Estes Michele I work collaboratively with other faculty to implement a mentoring program called Class of 2013 that connects under-privileged university and high school students for academic persistence. The program engages AVID students at Harrisonburg High School as mentees, and JMU Centennial Scholars students as mentors. All students are sophomores this year, 2010/11. Since 2008 we have worked as a team to plan and deliver the program online and in-person. We have a lock-in event at our university each fall, cultural events at the university and high school, and one or more activities in the community. I manage our online Ning social network with the help of a graduate student, and seek funding to continue the program. In addition to attending the scheduled events, I facilitate Ning training for students at the high school, attend parent night there, and otherwise support the partnership between school and university. We are working to expand our model to Skyline Middle School through a Professor in Residence there, and to replicate at other schools next year with support from Art Dean who is the JMU Executive Assistant to the President for DIversity. I am a volunteer at Spotswood Elementary School; and volunteer and PTA Treasurer for Thomas Harrison Middle School.

Fogus Brenda I have taught elementary, middle school, high school and post-high programming in special education. I have worked with students along the entire continuum of services; self-contained, resource, collaborative classes, homebound and residential.

Font George * As a JMU Professor-In-Residence (an Office of the Special Assistant to the President outreach endeavor), I have worked for the past five years in both middle and high schools in the community to promote the educational attainment and college aspirations of student populations who have historically lacked sufficient opportunities for attending colleges and universities. My charge as a PIR is to academically empower through the sharing of university technologies, research-based information, and personnel resources to address educational and social challenges facing underserved / underrepresented students, their families, and communities. * I organized three READ 436 classes for an in-service learning field experience to Genesis Alternative School in Staunton to provide my pre-service teacher students with an authentic learning experience of how academic, emotional, social, and behavioral education are together critical for success. Their essays after the visit demonstrated that what they learned will impact their future teaching in a multitude of positive ways (e.g., the uniqueness of each student and their individual needs and goals need to be recognized and validated, responses need to be timely, firm, positive, and supportive when conflict occurs, and that in order to recognize student progress and growth, teachers need to understand). After the visits, I then conducted an Alternative Schools Panel Session with READ 436 students, College of Education Dean Wishon, and alternative school teachers and counselors from Genesis and Murray High School.
