EXHIBITION PROPOSAL

THE GLAMOUR WOMENExpressive Portrait Paintings Inspired by Hollywood Legends and #metoo

The Glamour Women exhibition features pastel portraits by Houston, Texas artist Carolyn Hancock. The paintings pay tribute to the women of early Hollywood, and to the lives and obstacles each of them faced. The portraits combine representational art and raw emotions portrayed by one model and captured by the artist. Through vintage costumes, artful modeling, and exceptional handling of the medium, The Glamour Women share the emotions of women of beauty, talent and courage.

To capture an authentic look, the artist and model researched backgrounds andvintage styles. Through lighting and costumes, they recreated classic poses of some of the most loved of Hollywood’s stars. The ability of the model, Karen Borne, to identify with the pose and the artist’s painting skills enabled them tocreate unique portrayals, each perceived as a different person.

The paintings are beautiful in their own right, yet they represent three issues important to the art world. They salute representational art: painting what is real. They join the renaissance of portraiture, painting faces that look back at us with emotion and character. They represent the #metoo movement, paintinga visual story of women who decades ago succeeded in a world of harassment, abuse, and discrimination.

The paintings meld impressionist and realistic styles, in the pastel medium, sized from 48x48 and 32x24 to 12x12, and are exhibition framed, under non-glare glass.

The Glamour Women have just begun to tell their stories; they will continue through this ongoing series. The body of work that will be shown in the exhibition may not contain all of the paintings and subsequent paintings may be added. Additional paintings will be in the same style and represent the samequality.

Although this series is painted from my photographic references, I enjoy drawing and painting from life. I would be delighted to schedule a life painting demonstration during the exhibition term.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I paint emotion! I paint exclusively with the luminous beauty of the pastel medium. As a realist portrait painter, I look for that flicker of time that revealscharacter. My style is a step away from impressionism, almost detailed, but leaving a little mystery.

Pastel is a natural for all the techniques that I love to use: from bold color balanced with neutrals to energetic visible lines next to velvety smoothness. This style is perfect for the era and subject matter of The Glamour Women: recreating legends from the black and white talkies and into the age of Technicolor.

The concept of The Glamour Women is to recreate iconic poses of Hollywood stars. As the model and I spent time in research and photography, the series evolved into strong emotions; we weren’t doing pretty starlets, we were depicting an emotion that summed up the whole of the person’s life. And then something awful and unexpected happened: Harvey Weinstein and #metoo. We saw the parallel to the decisions and obstacles those early Hollywood women faced.

Now! These paintings seem necessary. The Glamour Women present not only the beauty of portraiture, but also a visual voice to the lives of women of beauty, talent, and courage.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Carolyn Hancock paints emotion and expression in her portraits, infusing them with the luminous beauty of the pastel medium. Carolyn began her art journey in 1994 after moving from Alabama to Los Angeles. Expecting only a short stay in California before moving out of the country, she loaded up on art classes andcourses. These led to her love of drawing, portraiture, and color.

While language barriers abroad prevented formal instruction, Carolyn trained herself through easel time, workshops, and the few books and videos on portraiture and pastel that were available in the 1990’s. Her early work reflected travels to different cultures, from the Maasai and ochre of Africa to the mosaic blues of the Middle East.

Returning to the United States, Carolyn studied with master pastellists Daniel Greene, Bob Gerbracht, Doug Dawson, and many others over time. Yet, that early freedom to develop her own style and sense of color is evident in her work today, a singular signature style.

Her frequent life painting sessions have grounded her knowledge of facial contours and capturing emotion. Her portraits are fresh, original, and exhibit a sense of realism with a nod to impressionism.

Carolyn lives in the Houston, Texas area, and exhibits her glowing pastel portraits in national and regional exhibitions. Her work is in collections internationally.
