Hydro Aluminium Hycast a.s. will present a new andrevolutionary in-line melt-refining unit at TMS 2002 AnnualMeeting and Exhibition in Seattle, Washington, USA.

Hydro has taken a step forward when it comes to in-linetechnology, compared to what has been available on themarket up till now. Hydro Aluminium is recognized as oneof the leading aluminium companies of the world, and hasput technology development based on own experience andcustomer input in focus.

The new I-60 SIR unit has been developed by Hycasttogether with Hydro‘s R&D centre at Sunndalsøra, Norway, and with input from the primary and secondary casthousesin Hydro.

Why develop a new in-line unit? Well, our customerslisted up several features they were looking for, but therewas not such unit available on the market. The major listof features our customers wanted and which is success-fully offered are:- New, unique, patented rotor and reactor technology.- A unit with excellent metallurgical performance on all

elements, even on particles and oxides, to avoid furtherdown-stream filtering for most of the alloys. Comparingthe results from the SIR with other published material onother degassing/ filter units, Hydro has never seenanything like it.

- Drain-free reactor, meaning that the metal is drained backto furnace, or can be drained to casting machine at theend of cast as a fully automatic operation.

- Simple installation and small foot-print. The SIR is a verycompact unit, with all major components integrated in onemachine. That means that we just need a few hook-upsto be up running in a few days.

- Low operation cost per tonne produced metal. Cost is ofgreat importance in all business, regardless of goodperformance or other features. The SIR will absolutelygive a very low operation cost compared to others.

- HSE aspects has definitely been put in focus whendeveloping the SIR unit. You would probably know thatHydro has a very high standard when it comes to this, and we are happy to say that the SIR is meeting thesestandards. In addition to above features, one of the most important

messages that was given by several of the Cast-houseManagers was: “I want a unit that is just sitting there, making me able to produce day after day with the samequality”.

After long term testing and verification in Hydro cast-houses, Hycast is happy to give the Cast-house Managerwant he wants.
