Deadline For Applications 30/09/11: M.A. Courses At Crawford College Of Art & Design
(C.I.T.), Cork. Applications to two Masters programmes at C.I.T. Crawford College Of Art &
Design are currently being accepted. Closing date for both applications is September 30th.
2011. The new taught masters M.A.:A.P. is open to all disciplines: will not offer applied
masters glass teaching as such – they will be able to offer students an induction to use their
glass facilities and arrange a limited number of tutorials with their glass specialist lecturer
Debbie Dawson. M.A.: Art & Process (M.A.:A.P.) is an exciting new 12 month taught
masters in Fine Art at C.I.T. Crawford College of Art & Design, that is delivered over the
calendar year from January to December. This intensive programme enables students to
investigate, develop and position their art practice, offering city centre studio space,
innovative approaches to teaching, and professional experience through collaborative
projects. M.A.:A.P. offers a vibrant engagement with the expanding discourses of art practice
today. The studio is treated as an open-ended exploratory space – a space for risk-taking,
experimentation and accident, and also for critical discussion and reflection. The programme
configures material and theoretical investigations together, allowing each student to develop a
unique working methodology underpinned by critical and theoretical awareness. Masters by
Research: a research student could request to work through the medium of glass specifically
and on successful application, request to work with Debbie Dawson as their supervisor. The
degree of Master Of Fine Art by Research is a N.Q.F. Level 9 supervised research degree
requiring high levels of independent enquiry; candidates are expected to take significant
responsibility for their work and its development. The research deliverables will vary
depending on the nature of the research – the college recognises the value of scholarly or
academic research and practice based or practice led research. In most cases the research
deliverables will include a Masters thesis which may encompass artefacts, artworks or
performance based works; in every case the work produced must be substantial and generally
based on independent research which demonstrates:
Ability to apply sound research methodologies
An in-depth and current knowledge of the subject of the research
Evidence of independent thinking and critical analysis, and
The ability to present outcomes in a clear and concise manner. Tel: 00 353 21 433 5200.

model materials will be demonstrated, thus some knowledge of clay, wax, and plaster work is
helpful to qualified participants; but all are welcome. If you can make it in wax, we can show
you how to cast it in bronze, glass or concrete for that matter! If you'd like to take full
advantage and arrive with a ready wax, look into the „Mouldmaking for Artists & Architects
Workshop‟ for the secrets of silicone rubber reproduction moulding. We can copy just about
anything!!!

15/10/1116/10/11. „Living With Glass‟ C.G.S. Conference. The Contemporary Glass
Society (C.G.S.) presents „Living With Glass‟; a conference that explores the use of glass in
interiors. The interiors of our public and private spaces are important to us; we shape them to
affect our mood, our message and our identity, and glass plays a rich and varied part in the
way that we do this. „Living With Glass‟ will explore the many ways we use glass in
interiors, and our speakers will represent the best of international practice. Richard Meitner,
Anna Dickinson, Simon Moore, Harry Cardross, Eva Menz, Heike Klussmann and Thorsten
Klooster (creators of „Blingcrete‟) and Florian Lechner will take us on a journey that explores
thought-provoking installation and sculpture, exquisite tableware, architectural virtuosity,
fabulous lighting and concrete that you will want in your living room. There will also be a
dramatic glass, light and sound perfomance to complete the experience. And all this will take
place in the stunning Art Deco, De La Warre Pavillion at Bexhill-On-Sea – just a short trip
from London. Delegates can choose to go to break-out sessions that cover „Getting your
designs manufactured‟ by David Proto and „Mentoring - One year On: Just what do you get
from mentoring and being mentored‟. By popular request we will be holding our second live
Glass Pechakucha: Twenty contemporary glass artists will be presenting their work in quick-
fire succession. For a chance to take part please see contact C.G.S. directly for more
information. „Living With Glass: Exploring Contemporary Glass And Interiors‟ will take

This class will reinterpret the Italian glass blowing techniques that defined Italian glass in the
modern era between 1930-1960. We will make the analogy between glass techniques and
language. The class goal is to expand your technical vocabulary of glassblowing techniques
in order make a more personal statement in your work. A broad survey of hotworking
techniques, including various types of cane and murrine processes will be demonstrated. The
incalmo process as well as more obscure patterning process like pullegusso, primavera, and
merletto will be topics of exploration. Please bring examples of Italian glass that interests
you, and we will do or best to faithfully replicate and talk about the process and ways to
make it your own. Bring your sketchbooks.
Matthew Urban began his studies at Philadelphia College of Art and Design as an industrial
design major. Interested in modern design, Matthew then began to focus on the history of
glass designed in Italy from the 1930-1960. In 1997 Matthew took a course at the Studio at
Corning with Maestro Gianni Toso which inspired him pursue a career in glass. Since that
time Matthew has studied in Italy and worked with numerous Italian glass Maestros. Matthew
has been an artist in residence at The Studio at Corning and works with Corning Museum of
Glass as a gaffer for the museum‟s “Glass Lab” design projects. Matthew was awarded his

Dear All, I was wondering if anyone can help me find some narrow reeded glass for a
restoration project as it is proving very difficult to find. The glass required will need to be
approx 4mm thick with very narrow reeds which are less than 1mm deep. There are
approximately 22 reeds to an inch and I believe that this is an English glass possibly made by
Pilkington‟s. Unfortunately this is no longer made by Pilkington‟s so need to try to source it
from somewhere else. We would need around 20 sheets with the measurements of 885mm X
545mm.If anyone can help me please contact me on Email: [email protected] or my
colleague Garth in the Recclesia studio on Email: [email protected] . Thank you for your
time reading this, I‟ll look forward to hearing from you. Katherine Walton.

*In an email from Rose Watban, Senior Curator, Applied Art & Design at the National
Museums Scotland, Edinburgh, she wrote, “I thought I should let you know that the final
visitor numbers for „A Passion For Glass‟ were 41,169, double the original target of
20,000”. .... As you see, these figures are way over and above what the museum anticipated
for this glass collection exhibition. I'm absolutely bowled over by the numbers that have
attended this exhibition and kind words they have all expressed in the visitor(s) books.
Thanks to everyone that took the time and trouble to visit Edinburgh and enjoy this once in a
lifetime look at so much of the work in our glass collection, now „Gifted‟ to the museum.
Lastly, congratulations, Rose, Alison and all the team at N.M.S. You‟ve all excelled
yourselves and done a wonderful job. (As have/did, the staff actually in the gallery every day.
I am very much aware of how good they were with the general public!)

*Glass Sculptor Receives Honour! Glass sculptor David Reekie has been awarded an
honorary degree by the University of Wolverhampton. The School of Art & Design presented
the honour at a graduation ceremony at the Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton. David received
an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Arts in recognition of his eminence in English glass
sculpture. He said: “I was very surprised and honoured to be considered for this award. I have
had a very strong association with the West Midlands over the years - I studied at the Glass
Department of Stourbridge College Of Art which was eventually amalgamated with the
University Of Wolverhampton. My two daughters were born in the West Midlands and I have
kept up close ties with the Glass scene which is an important part of Black Country history,
so it is very apt and I am very pleased that this honour should be coming from the University
Of Wolverhampton. David Reekie was born in Hackney, London in May 1947. He studied
Glass and Ceramics at Stourbridge College Of Art 1967-70 and in 1972 studied for an Art
Teachers Diploma at Birmingham College Of Art Education. He was awarded a Fellowship
in Glass by Lincolnshire and Humberside Arts in 1975 and was a founder member of British
Artists in Glass in 1976. From 1976 he lectured at North Staffordshire Polytechnic, moving to
Norwich in 1986 where he set up his own studio. In 1988 he was awarded a Winston
Churchill Fellowship to study Alternative Architectural Glass in the US. From 1994-97 he
was appointed an International Council Member to Pilchuck Glass School. He was shortlisted
for the 1998 Jerwood Prize for Glass and his work was selected for exhibition at the G8
Summit in Birmingham. In 2002 he was appointed a member of the Advisory Council for
North Lands Creative Glass, Scotland and two years later was invited to attend a reception
given at Buckingham Palace to celebrate British Design. David‟s work was shortlisted for the
2006 Coburg Glass Prize in Germany. He was invited to speak at the Contemporary Glass
Society Conference at the Eden Project, „Looking Into Glass‟ and, in 2008, he was a speaker
at the Creative Pathways Symposium at the University of Wolverhampton. David has
lectured throughout the world including; Pilchuck Glass School, U.S.A.; Sars Poteries,
France; Ezra Glass Studios, Kanazo, Japan; and Espace Verre, Montreal, Canada. In 2009
David had a Residency at South Australia School of Art in Adelaide and also lectured at the
University of South Australia. Earlier this year he taught at the Fire Station Artists Studios,
Dublin and will be teaching at the Wanganui Glass Festival, in New Zealand later in the year.
The University‟s graduation ceremonies are being held at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre
from Thursday, 1 September to Friday 9 September 2011. „Congratulations David, you richly
deserve this award!‟ Website: www.wlv.ac.uk/default.aspx?page=27923
In an email recently received from Carrie Fertig, she writes: I‟m a sculptor working in
flameworked glass, and I like to work big. On October 8th.
there will be a private view and
interactive performance for a twenty-five foot pair of flameworked glass dove wings that will
be installed in the North Transept of Chichester Cathedral, in Chichester England though
January 17th.
, 2012. My intention is for this work to create a place of wonder for the over
103,000 people who would be expected to visit the Cathedral while the wings are in the North
Transept. People visit Chichester Cathedral for lots of reasons including: attending services,
looking at the architecture, prayer, listening to concerts, and to seek solace. This sculpture
aims to positively impact the experience of being in the Cathedral for all visitors no matter
what the reason for their visit. Whilst it is an honour to have such a magnificent environment
for this installation and performance, I must do all the fund raising for this project myself,
and to that end, I am running a crowdfunding campaign on the IndieGoGo website. Here is
the link: http://www.indiegogo.com/Glass-Wings-for-Chichester-
Cathedral?a=205788&i=wdgi . Please support this project if you possibly can, and spread
the word to all you think might be interested in seeing flameworked glass on a very large
scale transform a space into a place of wonder and peace. The link above has buttons for
Facebook, Twitter, etc... to make sharing this information easy. I am very grateful for your
help. Thank you. Sincerely, Carrie Fertig. Mob: 07966 689 833.

Tim Jago Morris sent me an email recently telling me of the great work he has been doing
with local children in Newcastle. Tim has been undertaking a commission from Newcastle
City Arts and Kids Kabin, to produce 32 Pâte De Verre medals, in collaboration with local 7-
9 year olds, for their „Urban Games 2011 & Hip Hop‟ event which was held in Whitley Bay
over the weekend of 13-14 August. Website: www.theurbangames.org.uk . Let‟s hope that
this will be the first of very many Olympic events including glass in one form or another, that
will hopefully take place all over the British Isles with the build up to 2012. „Let the “Glass
Games” commence, or at the very least, start to be organised and thought through. It‟s a great
opportunity not to be missed in promoting the skills and excellence of contemporary glass.
I‟m pleased to read in the latest edition of the Guild Of Glass Engraver‟s „Summer
