Glass Courses In The Forest Of Dean. Mollie Meager invites you to join her for 3 courses in her strawbale workshop.*29/03/1331/03/13. Late Fragment. Course leader Davina Kirkpatrick. This course will explore fragments – I encourage participants to reflect on the poem, “Late Fragment” by Raymond Carver, guiding their thoughts prior to coming on the course. It could suggest overheard conversations, last conversations we wish we’d had; fragments of image or object, We will explore through a variety of creative strategies including writing, drawing and montage, some ideas to work with glass, possibly combining with other materials. Techniques will include fusing and encapsulation, slumping and glass painting. Please bring ideas, images, objects and fragments that are sparked by the theme.*18/05/1319/05/13 & 24/05/1326/05/13. Life And Light. Course leaders: Mollie Meager and Catrin Davies. This workshop is over two weekends. The first weekend will be working with a life model and exploring black and white mark making and imagery through drawing, painting and basic printmaking techniques. These images will inform the following weekend workshop, when we will be working on window glass with engraving, abrading, sandblasting, acid etching, painting and silver staining, keeping to the theme of black and white – with the addition of silver stain.*05/07/1307/07/13. Space, Place, Site, Location. Glass Enamelling. Course leader Penny Somerville. By inhabiting a place, we imbue it with our own special quality of 'being'. Colour, light, atmosphere, temperature, sounds all contribute to building an image of 'place', our 'place'.We will use our time in the Forest to find some understanding of our relationship to this particular place ....making drawings, developing ideas through collage. The aim of the weekend will be to make some kind of 'talisman' of this time in this place using glass. The ideas generated will be developed into glass pieces using enamels and other surface treatments. Students will be encouraged to be experimental. The process is always more important than the end product! We will begin on the previous evening with a joint meal and a talk by the course tutor. The Forest of Dean is situated between the Severn and the Wye, the triangle of land between Gloucester, Ross on Wye and Chepstow. It is an area of mystery and natural beauty where among the trees, there are standing stones, roaming sheep, wild boar, deer and a sculpture trail. My workshop is in a paddock with the forest as its border on two sides. Cost: Weekend workshops: £200.00, 5 day workshop: £300.00. £50.00 reduction for students and possibility of working on the land as part payment. 09/04/13 13/04/13. Engraving With Dominic Fondé . ‘Micrographia – I Spy With My Little Eye’. Tuesday 9th. April to Saturday 13th. April 5 Days in total 9-5 pm, materials provided. Workshops cost AU$660 (GST inc). Please note if you are attending the conference (three-day pass) and participating in a workshop you are entitled to a AU$145 discount. As a child most of us will have played the game “I spy with my little eye…” The rules are very simple, one person decides on an object and says, for example, “I spy with my little eye something beginning with…T” the others playing the game will start to guess, “Table…telephone…” until the correct item is discovered. The version of this game to be played as part of Micrographia takes this premise to a whole new level and uses the microscope to do the “spying”. In the 16th. century Galileo used a primitive compound microscope for research and referred to it as his “little eye”. It is from this fact that our project takes its name but a much more significant microscope was the one used by Robert Hooke and Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek in the 17th. Century. Robert Hooke is often referred to as the Father of Microscopy and this project intends to demonstrate why his work was so radical. Participants will attempt to create a 17th. century microscope of the same design as the Van Leeuwenhoek microscope. They will then use it to draw an image of an item found within the vicinity of the workshop. (It may be advisable to have a selection of objects on hand to keep the event on schedule). Back in the 17th. Century a scientist or researcher did not have access to a camera to record his or her findings so a drawing or an engraving was made to record the image. The resulting drawings will be displayed at the end of the day and participants will be asked to identify the object drawn. A prize will be given to the best judged drawing. The microscope itself is very simple and consists of nothing more than spherical round lens. This lens is created using a hot flame and rod of clear glass. As Dominic is a trained glassmaker he can demonstrate the making of the lens and the teams will each attempt to make a lens of their own. The resulting lens, while crude and tiny has a massive historical significance and is in essence the same tool used by Robert Hooke and Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek. It should be noted that the lenses can be tricky to use for the uninitiated so a number of conventional magnifying glasses will be provided should anyone be feeling frustrated. Dominic. Participants younger than 14 will be supplied with a lens pre-made by Dominic. 18/05/13: Scottish Glass Society - Trip To Kelvingrove Art Gallery And Glass Collection. We will meet in the morning at 10:30, on Saturday the 18th. of May, at Kelvingrove Art Gallery. We will be met by Alison Brown the Curator of European Decorative Arts Dept. She will show us some of the key items in the collection on display and further examples of glass in a few other galleries in the museum. After a quick lunch we will visit the glass collections (Scottish and European) in the stores of Glasgow museums centre at Nitshill. Finishing the day around 16:00. It's unusual to be able to go and look at all of this, especially the stores which are not usually opened to the public. And to be given a tour of it by someone so knowledgeable should be a real treat. The cost of all of this is only £5.00, which doesn't include your lunch I'm afraid, but I hope you'll agree it is money well spent. We are just looking for numbers at the moment and will firm up details and travel arrangements in the following months. Please get in touch with me if you would be interested in attending. It will be a great opportunity to meet other glass enthusiasts and see some beautiful art work, so I very much hope to hear from you. From: Michael [[email protected]].Message: Hi, I know this is a bit of a random request but I am looking to find someone to custom make several 50p to the same dimensions with different coloured glass. I am a collector of 50ps and I'm looking for some unique additions to my collection (I am also looking into enamel, playing, marquetry and micro-enamel pieces). Would you be able to create such a piece based on a 1990 UK 50p with the Britannia design on reverse and queen's portrait on the obverse? If it is not possible to design both sides would it be possible to create two coins? One for each side of the coin? Regards, Michael.Email: [email protected]

*Hot Glass Studio Hire. ‘Blown Studio Glass’ – Devon. To facilitate Nick Orsler`s ongoing design commitments he will only be using the hotglass facilities 2-3 days a week hence we are currently seeking working partnership(s) to share the glassmaking facility (the Studio). The Studio has a bespoke furnace (designed by Dartington Glass) and the capacity of a KZ1 pot (we currently melt glasma pellet) – glory hole (3 size doors) – pipe warming stand – 2 x 1 tonne 3 phase annealing kilns (6ft tall x 4 ft wide x 5 ft deep). We currently run two work stations (a third is available) – compressed airlines are supplied to both positions. Grinding facilities are housed at the rear of the studio. We would be very interested to hear from any makers who would be interested in sharing the studio on a regular basis either 1,2 or 3 days a week.(the studio is available 7 days a week). The cost of the studio share would depend on the use but we would like to emphasise that this is not a profit making proposal for the studio – it is purely to utilise the spare capacity that has become available and will be charged at cost. In addition there maybe a possibility of taking or sharing some of our gallery space to promote and sell your work. The studio is based in the centre of Totnes, South

Devon and is housed within a popular tourist attraction and benefits from free car parking. The studio is also a couple of minutes walk from Totnes Station so very easy commutes between Plymouth and London. For more information please Email: [email protected] initially indicating how much furnace/studio time you will be requiring.Website: www.blownstudioglass.co.uk
