2-Year Certification Program in Existential Psychoanalysis & Phenomenology

The 2-year certification program in existential psychoanalysis and phenomenology is designed for M.A./Ph.D. students or graduates in psychology, counseling, social work, philosophy, or a related field who are interested in the theoretical and clinical aspects of psychoanalysis (both traditional and existential), phenomenology, and critical philosophy (primarily of the European tradition, 18th-21st centuries). The program is a full two years, spanning 24 months in duration and should be of particular interest to practitioners who want intensive study in psychoanalysis in a program that includes competitive tuition, publishing opportunities, and a curriculum that is broader, deeper, and richer than other programs of this type. EPIS also has a 4-year program that requires additional study, clinical and research experience, and personal analysis; a student who completes the 2-year program may transfer directly into the 3rd year of the 4-year program without interruption.

The individual components of the program include regular Seminar attendance, analytical essays, clinical work, internship, and a well-researched thesis. There are 4 core Seminars that span the 2 years; there are also 6-8 additional Seminars in specialized topic areas. Clinical work includes 2-3 control cases in consultation with a supervisor. The internship involves participation in various activities of EPIS including the clinic, research, the publishing house, and the online journal. The thesis requires intensive research on a focused topic which will be published through EPIS Publishing. There will also be an oral defense.

The overall mission of EPIS Education is to integrate three rich discursive practices that inquire into the human condition but whose doors have been historically closed to one another until the inception of our institute. These discourses include a) the traditional psychoanalytic tradition from Freud to the present; b) the existential psychoanalytic tradition from Heidegger and Binswanger to the present; and c) the phenomenological tradition from Brentano and Husserl to the present. We investigate all of these discourses through the methodologies of the critical philosophies of the French and of the Germans, including hermeneutics, deconstruction, Critical Theory, and semiology. The 2-year certificate program uses as its foundation this underlying EPIS mission and structure in order to deliver a rigorous program to students and graduates who are looking for advanced study and clinical experience that utilize this worldview.

The Seminars include core topics as follows: Existential Phenomenology and Psychoanalysis; Phenomenological Method and Psychoanalysis; European Critical Philosophy and Psychoanalysis; and Traditional Psychoanalysis. There are also specialized Seminars including Cultural Criticism and Psychoanalysis; The Lived Body and Psychoanalysis; The Passage from Modernism to Postmodernism and Psychoanalysis; French Deconstruction and Critical Philosophy; German Critical Philosophy; and Advanced Existential Phenomenology.

Delivery of the program is multi-faceted, including on-ground seminars, tutorials, clinic, and all methods of distance learning. Currently we offer the program in Seattle and Santa Barbara with plans to expand to other learning centers both nationally and internationally. Well-qualified individuals with post-doctoral education and training, both academic and clinical, direct the program. We offer a tuition-reimbursement program to defray tuition and expenses.
