Masthead - NME magazine uses the convention of using a dominate masthead which is placed at the very top of the front cover. The masthead is bold white and red letters, which creates the sense that the magazine is dominating, which will attract consumers. It is also modern looking which will attract its audience of modern, trendy males. This also emphasises the idea of brand loyalty. This is because the masthead itself is focusing on its audience. The convention also makes it easier for the audience to establish the magazine as we read from left to right. The font used is bold and stands out from the background due to the contrast in colours used. This will therefore stand out to the audience amongst shops. The font is modern text which reflects its target audience of young, trendy males. It could also attract new readers to the magazine due to the ‘attention grabbing’ masthead.

Kerrang!'s masthead is in a bold font and is all in capital letters, which gives out an easygoing feeling. The fact that the letters are all spaced closely together also add to this feeling of being cool and informal. The exclamation mark at the end is a unique feature of this magazine's title and is one of the only ones to have it and it has the effect of inducing excitement; A sort of texture effect has been applied to the outside of the letters so that the colour appears to be spilling out, yet again emphasising the upbeat feel of the magazine. The white lines that cut through the masthead add to the upbeat feeling as they give an impression of "not caring" by cutting through randomly and also of speed which shows excitement.

Q magazine's masthead has a bright red background which allows it to be bold and clear the letter Q stands out against the already bright red since it is white which enables it to bold, dimension is added with the use of inner and outer shadow used around the letter Q. The font is sans serif as the serif has a swift flick. The 'Q' is also italic as it is angled forward. All the extra properties that have been given to this typeface makes it aesthetically pleasing and easy to identify or to associate with when referring to 'Q' magazine.
