Exodus 11:1-12:42
The Passover:
Remembering the past
Pointing to the future
Overview
• Judgment & History (the link to last week)
• Typology
• The Passover: sacrifice, grace, redemption • The Passover lamb• The Passover feast• The Passover transaction
• So what?
Judgment
• God’s judgment is rooted in God’s justice• Both reflect his nature (although not
completely)
• Judgment is certain
• Judgment is all-inclusive
• Judgment will be devastating
Typology
• To qualify as a “type”• Rooted in history• Main point of the story• The fulfillment must intensify the features
• Is this a valid type?• John 1:29• 1 Corinthians 5:7• Revelation 5:6, 5:12-13 etc.
So what?
• We need to take the Bible’s teaching about judgment seriously
• There is a way of escape
The Passover lamb
• Was a picture of Jesus who was the Lamb of God
• The lamb was substituted for the firstborn
• Yearling – cut off in the prime of life
• Had to be perfect
• Taken from the flock
• Separate from the flock
So what?
• Jesus, the perfect lamb of God gave himself as a sacrifice for us• He died in our place to purchase our
freedom
• Do we keep in mind the cost?
• Do we live in the light of the cost?
The Passover feast
• Was given before the law
• Was celebrated by families not dispensed by a priest
• The blood had to be sprinkled
• Was roasted whole
• Was to be eaten
• Was to be eaten completely
• Ready to leave
So what?
• It is not enough that Jesus died:• We have to receive the forgiveness by faith• We have to repent• We have to give Him His rightful place
The Passover transaction
• Jesus takes my sin on himself
• Jesus gives me His righteousness
Today’s take-away
• Judgment is certain, universal and devastating
• God himself has dealt with the problem of our sin at great cost to himself
• We need to take this to ourselves
