MAGNESIUM PRODUCTION AT A GLANCE

Perak Smelter is designed to produce 1250mt of magnesium ingot per month when the commercial production reaches maximum capacity. Currently Perak Smelter is still on the stage of ramping up production.

1) Conveyor Feeding System

Dolomite is loaded into Conveyor Feeding System by dozer.

Dolomite is transferred from hopper to weighing chain conveyor in the form of granules before feeding into Rotary Kiln System.

2) Rotary Kiln System




The calcinations process in the Rotary Kiln System is to calcinate the dolomite granules into calcinated dolomite as below:

Ferrosilicon (reduction agent) mixed with calcinated dolomite and calcium fluorite and then milled by ball miller to produce powder form material.

4) Pelletizing System

In Pelletizing system, the powder form material will go through a process to become pellet form material.

Magnesium crown

The pellet form material then will be loaded into retort and deoxidization process will take place at high temperature. The magnesium gas, once cooled, forms solid “crowns” of crude magnesium crystal at the cooling end of the retort.

6) Refining System

Magnesium crown is melted in the furnace and the liquid magnesium after smelting will proceed to casting System.

7) Casting System

From the refining process above, the liquid magnesium is fed into auto casting machine as below and cast into final product magnesium ingot.

8) Acid Wash System




Acid washing Drying We perform acid wash on the magnesium ingot to clean up the surface and to create a light protection surface in order to reduce oxidization. After acid washed, it will proceed for drying.

9) Packing System

A well packed magnesium ingot will be sending to store and ready for delivery.

The magnesium ingot price (FOB China) is increasing gradually since early of 2011 from USD 2,910/mt to current USD 3,230/mt. According to Asian Metal, the price is expected to rise after China has issued new admittance standard for the magnesium industry which is expected to affect magnesium ingot output from China. This will further influence the supply, pushing the price in an upward trend. Apart from that, demand for magnesium in the Mexican market continues to be strong as the domestic automotive sector continues to report great growth since the beginning of 2011.
