A Few Observations Toward the Future States collectively spend about $10 billion in federal
funds each year on the Interstate System
The current annual shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund is about $10 billion
A toll of about 2¢ per mile for cars and 4¢ per mile for trucks for travel on the Interstate System would generate about $16 billion annually
The toll from Jacksonville, FL to Pittsburg, PA would be about $16 for cars and $32 for trucks – a trip to Seattle, WA would be about $60 for cars and $120 for trucks
So . . . should the future preservation and capacity needs of the Interstate System be funded through tolls?
