Thermostatic Expansion ValvesType TRE 10, TRE 20, TRE 40 and TRE 80
Introduction TRE thermostatic expansion valves have beendesigned and developed for soldering into air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. Theirhermetic tight design meets environmentaldemands for today and the future. They canbe used in systems ranging in capacity from28 to 245 kW (8 to 70 TR (R22)).
The TRE design incorporates a hot-pressedbrass body with the entire power element,including the capillary tube and bulb,fabricated from stainless steel. The offsetinline bimetal solder connections are formedfrom rolled stainless steel and copper. Thevalve incorporates a 2-way balanced portorifice making it ideal for biflow operation.
External superheat adjustment is a standardfeature on all TRE valves. For non-adjustableOEM versions, a setting assembly is availablefor field retrofit. A strainer is also available asan accessory for mounting in the inletconnection.
TRE valves can be used for all fluorinatedrefrigerants, and are available for R22,R410A, R134a, and R407C. Models for otherrefrigerants can be produced to order.
Contact Danfoss for further information.

Static superheat SS can be adjusted with thesetting spindle (5), see fig. 2. The standardsuperheat setting (SS) is 4K / 7.2F for valveswith MOP and 5K / 9.0F for valves withoutMOP. Valves can also be supplied with afixed setting. For factory non-adjustablevalves, an adjustment assembly is availableas an optional accessory (6).
The two-way balanced port feature (4)ensures minimal superheat changes whendifferential pressure varies. This featuremakes the valve ideal for biflow operation.
The central pressure pin is fitted with a robustseal (3) that ensures maximum tightness forthe life of the valve.An inlet filter (7) is available as an accessory.

Terminology (fig.3)SS = Static superheatOS = Opening superheatSH = SS + OS = Total superheat
ExampleStatic superheat SS = 4 K (7.2F)
(factory setting)
Opening superheat OS= 4K (7.2F)The opening superheat is 4K, i.e. from thepoint the valve begins to open up to nominalcapacity. Opening superheat is determined bythe design and cannot be changed.
Total superheat SH = SS + OSSH = 4 + 4 = 8K (14.4F)
Total superheat SH can be changed bychanging SS (by using the setting spindle).
Important valve information is provided on thediaphragm element (fig. 1).

Ordering Valve and bulb strap are supplied in bulkindustrial pack or individually in multipack. Thenumbers supplied are as follows:
Note:Insufficient subcooling can produce flash gas.
ExampleRefrigerant = R 22Evaporating temperature te = 10 °C / 14 F
pe = 3.5 bar / 51 psiCondensing temperature tc = 40°C / 104 F
pc = 15.5 bar / 225 psiPressure drop in valvep = 15.5 - 3.5 - 2 = 10 bar / 154 psi1)
Subcooling tsub = 15 K / 27 F
Evaporator capacity = 40 kW / 11.4 TRCorrection value from table = 1.11
Sizing Correction for subcooling tsub
The evaporator capacity used must becorrected if subcooling deviates from 4 K(7.2F). The corrected capacity can be obtainedby dividing the evaporator capacity by thecorrection factor given below.
The corrected evaporator capacity thusbecomes 40 : 1.11 = 36 kW / 10.3 TRSince the expansion valve capacity must beequal to or slightly greater than the correctedevaporator capacity of 36 kW / 10.3 TR, aTRE20-12.5X with a table capacity of37.7 kW / 10.8 TR would be a suitable choice.
1) The pressure drop (pc - pe) must be corrected for pres-sure drop in the liquid line and distributor and leads. Ifin doubt, allow 2 bar / 20 psi. Therefore actual pressuredrop is p = pc - pe - 2 bar.

Thermostatic expansion valves, type TE 5 - TE 55
 Danfoss A/S (RC-CM / MWA), 09 - 2002 Technical leaflet - RD1AY202 35
Design
Function
GeneralTE 5 and TE 55 valves have an interchangeableorifice assembly.
TE 5 and TE 55 valves are built up of threeinterchangeable main components:I. Thermostatic element, 1II. Orifice assembly, 2III. Valve body with connections, 3
For the same valve type and refrigerant, theassociated orifice assembly is suitable for allversions of valve body and in all evaporatingtemperature ranges.The charge in the thermostatic element depends
on the evaporating temperature range. Thevalves are equipped with external pressureequalization.External pressure equalization should always beused on systems with liquid distributors.The double contact bulb gives fast and precisereaction to temperature changes in theevaporator. It also makes fitting the bulb quickand easy.The valves are able to withstand the effects thatnormally occur with hot gas defrosting.
To ensure long operating life, the valve coneand seat are made of a special alloy withparticularly good wear qualities.

Element label
Orifice assembly markingfor TE 5 and TE 12
Orifice assembly markingfor TE 20 and TE 55
The thermostatic element is fitted with a label (ontop of the diaphragm).The code refers to therefrigerant for which the valve is designed:
X = R 22N = R 134aS = R 404A/ R507Z = R 407C
The label gives valve type, evaporatingtemperature range, MOP point, refrigerant, andmax. test pressure, PB.
With TE 20 and TE 55 the rated capacity isstamped on a band label fastened to the valve.
Orifice assembly for TE 5, TE 12, 20 and 55The orifice assembly is marked on top of thespring cup, e.g. as shown in the figure.For a given size of valve, the same orificeassembly can be used for valves with ranges Nand B.
The thermostatic elements are different however: On TE 5 and TE 12
the upper stamp (TE 12) indicates for whichvalve type the orifice can be used. The lowerstamp (01) is the orifice size.
 On TE 20 and TE 55the upper stamp (N/B 50/35 TR) indicatesthe rated capacity in the two evaporatingtemperature ranges N and B, and therefrigerant.(50/35 TR = 175 kW in range N and 123 kW inrange B).The lower stamp (TEX 55) refers to the valvetype for which the assembly can be used.
Capillary tube labelTE 5 TE 55
Capillary tube label for TE 5 to TE 55The label gives the orifice size (04). A new labelalways accompanies a new orifice assembly.

Liquid distributors, type 69G,for thermostatic expansion valves
Introduction
The 69G distributes refrigerant liquid from thethermostatic expansion valve to the individualsections of the evaporator.
Note!The thermostatic expansion valve must haveexternal pressure equalization.
Approvals PRS, Poland
Selection of liquiddistributor
The following data must be known:1. Refrigerant2. Evaporator capacity3. Evaporating temperature4. Number of evaporator sections5. Expansion valve type
It is then possible to determine:I. Size of distributor tubes
The capacity of the individual distributor tubeis calculated by dividing the total evaporator
capacity by the number of uniform evaporatorsections. The tube diameter can then be foundin table I or the graph below.Sizing should be based on the averagecapacity of the evaporator. A sufficiently uni-form distribution can be expected at capacitiesof between 40% and 125% of the values givenin table I.
II. Code number (Industrial pack only)See table II.

Capacity
It is recommended that distributor tubes be sizedfor a pressure drop of approx. 0.5 bar. Table I,which gives the capacities for different tubesizes, is based on this pressure drop. For tubelengths exceeding 1 m, tubes should be selected
with larger diameters than indicated in table I. Thefigure shows the relation betweenevaporator capacity Qe, refrigerant, tubediameter, evaporating temperature te andpressure drop p for 1 m distributor tubes.

Please note:Some of the mentionedcode numbers are notestablished in thesystem and will only beestablished in case of acertain minimum order(pcs./year).
Selection exampleGiven:1. Refrigerant = R 222. Evaporator capacity Qe = 24 kW3. Evaporating temperature te = 15°C4. Number of evaporator sections = 105. Expansion valve type = TEX 12 with 78 in.
ODF solder connection on outlet side.
The capacity for the individual distributor tube is24 10 = 2.4 kW.Using table I or the graphs on the previouspage, it can be seen that at an evaporating tem-
perature of –15°C for R 22 a 14 in. tube, 1 m long,will yield 2.4 kW.A liquid distributor with the same connection asthe expansion valve outlet can now be found i.e.78 in. ODM solder with holes for 14 in. distributortubes.Table II gives the code no. for this distributor:069G3002.The number of distributor tubes is the same asthe number of evaporator sections; in thisexample, 10.The distributor can thus be ordered:069G3002 with 10 holes.
