Advent Reflections

The Advent Season has come again when we are invited to make our journey to Bethlehem to see the loving kindness of the Lord revealed in the baby Jesus in the manger.

This season we rejoice, for Jesus’ coming brings us “good news of great joy.” It brings us peace and hope and light in our darkness.

We can hardly believe that God would be this humble, this self-giving, this vulnerable, in order to be Emmanuel, God-with-us! But such is the depth of God’s love for us. Seeing Jesus in the manger changes our understanding of God completely, for now we see God’s tender mercy, pure compassion, and loving presence as never before.

God has come to dwell with us and in us!

Let us respond with this prayer, in the words of Phillips Brooks who wrote the carol, “O Little Town of Bethlehem”:

“O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray;

cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today.

We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell;

O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel!”

Two frozen turkeys and 10 bags of requested food items and a truckload of potatoes,

onions, and carrots were delivered to the Center for Food Action last week for Thanksgiving

baskets. Thanks to everyone who helped with this project.

As of Nov. 18th, $575 had been contributed for The World Mission Offering to help ABCUSA

missionaries abroad. There is one Sunday left for this offering. Perhaps we can exceed our goal!

Explanatory brochures and offering envelopes will be in the worship bulletins on Nov. 25th.

Looking ahead to December, Christmas gifts of clothes and toiletries will be collected for

Covenant House which houses homeless young people. A box under the Mission Bulletin Board

will be provided along with a list of suggested gifts . Hurrah for our mission-minded Church! We

will also be offering opportunities for people to purchase alternative gifts for Christmas presents

such as chickens, goats, and food items for needy persons in under- developed countries. These

lists will be available on December 2nd at fellowship hour.

We must remember to fulfill our $10,000 pledge to Baptist Camp Lebanon by the end of

2019. So far we have contributed about $7000. If you made a pledge, remember to pay it

off. Food for December will go to the Ridgewood Board of Social Services.

Join us in praying for mutual concerns and

reflection on Step 11 of the Twelve-Step Program:

“An Alternative Mind”

“It is work to learn how to pray, largely the work of emptying the mind and filling the heart… Prayer is not about changing God, but being willing to let God change us… Peoples’ willingness to find God in their own struggle with life— and let it change them— is their deepest and truest obedience to God’s eternal will.”

Remembering Dr. Richard Lee Swarm, Member: 1968-2018

Dr. Swarm’s family has provided us with these words of remembrance:

Richard Lee Swarm (6/9/1927- 6/21/2018) was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He decided to get some college courses in before potential military service and went to Washington University instead of his senior year of high school. He was then accepted into medical school there. There he met Pauline Alexander and they married in December, 1950 when he was training in pathology and Pauline in pediatrics. He served as a conscientious objector and did alternative service in the public health service.

Highlights of his professional career include cancer research at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, and the University of Cincinnati, Department of Pathology. During those years, he was a national leader in research in the carcinogenic effects of radiation exposure. A move to be the Director of Pathology and Toxicology at Hoffman La-Roche brought him and his family to New Jersey in 1968. They, with their children, Lee Ann and Bob, joined the Emmanuel Baptist Church. He later worked as the Medical Director of Clinical Labs at Helen Hayes Hospital, NY. He resigned his position at Helen Hayes to care for Pauline during her prolonged illness.

He remained a long-time member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Even when severity of back pain and illness precluded direct participation, he always wanted to listen to the Sunday morning service through the telephone dial-in connection.

As was his long-standing desire, he remained in his own home in Ridgewood until just a few days before his death when he suffered a severe stroke. He was buried during a small family grave-side service at Pauline’s family cemetery in Mulberry, Arkansas.

He is survived by daughter, Lee Ann, an attorney with Legal Aid in Knoxville, Tennessee; his son Bob, a pain management physician with Washington University in St. Louis, daughter-in-law, Sharon Parker, and granddaughters, Alyson, an elementary school teacher in New Haven Connecticut, and Rebecca, an attorney in New York City.

We give thanks to God for Dick’s life and dedication and 50-year membership at Emmanuel.
