    SAFETY RESTRAINTSPRECAUTIONS

The use of safety belts helps to

restrain both driver and passengersin case of a collision. Most statesand in Canada, the law requiresthe use of safety belts.

Always drive and ride withyour seatback upright and

the lap belt snug and low acrossthe hips.

All occupants of thevehicle, including the

driver, should always wear theirsafety belts, even when an airbag Supplemental RestraintSystem is provided.

If the air bag is inflated,

the air bag will notfunction again and must bereplaced immediately. If theair bag is not replaced, theunrepaired area will increase therisk of injury in a collision.

    The SRS consists of:

driver and passenger air bagmodules (which include theinflators and air bags),

one or more impact and safingsensors,

    a readiness light and tone

and the electrical wiring whichconnects the components.

The diagnostic module monitors itsown internal circuits and thesupplemental air bag electricalsystem readiness ( including theimpact sensors), the system wiring, the air bag system readiness light, the air bag back up power and theair bag ignitors.

    Determining if the system isoperational

The SRS uses a readiness light inthe instrument cluster or a tone toindicate the condition of thesystem. Refer to the Air bag

readiness section in theInstrumentation chapter. Routinemaintenance of the air bag is notrequired.

Never let a passenger holda child on his or her lap

while the vehicle is moving. Thepassenger cannot protect the

child from injury in a collision.

Do not leave children, unreliable adults, or pets

    unattended in your vehicle.

    Always follow the instructions and

warnings that come with any infantor child restraint you might use.

If possible, place children in therear seat of your vehicle. Accidentstatistics suggest that children aresafer when properly restrained inrear seating positions than whenthey are restrained in front seating

    BEFORE STARTING YOUR

    VEHICLE

    Important safety precautions

A computer system controls theengines idle revolut ions perminute (RPM). When the enginestarts, the idle RPM runs faster towarm the engine. If the engine idle

speed does not slow downautomatically, have the vehiclechecked. Do not allow the vehicleto idle for more than ten minutes.

Extended idling at highengine speeds can produce

very high temperatures in theengine and exhaust system,

creating the risk of fire or otherdamage.

Do not park, idle, or driveyour vehicle in dry grass

or other dry ground cover. Theemission system heats up theengine compartment and exhaustsystem, which can start a fire.

Do not start your vehiclein a closed garage or in

other enclosed areas. Exhaustfumes can be toxic. Always openthe garage door before you start

the engine. See Guardi ngagai n st exhau st fu m es in thischapter for more instructions.

spark ignition system. This systemmeets all CanadianInterference-Causing Equipmentstandard requirements regulatingthe impulse electrical field strengthof radio noise.

When starting a fuel-injectedengine, avoid pressing the

accelerator before or duringstarting. Only use the acceleratorwhen you have difficulty startingthe engine. For more informationon starting the vehicle, refer toStartin g the vehicle in thischapter.

    Before starting the vehicle:

    BRAKES

    Brakes

Your brakes are self-adjusting.Refer to the Service Guide formaintenance scheduling.

    Anti-lock brake system (ABS) (ifequipped)

The ABS operates by detecting theonset of wheel lock up duringbrake applications andcompensating for this tendency. The front wheels are preventedfrom locking even when the brakesare firmly applied. Theaccompanying illustration depictsthe advantage of an ABS equippedvehicle (on bottom) to a non-ABSequipped vehicle (on top) duringhard braking.

    Using ABS

In an emergency, apply full forceon the brake. The ABS will beactivated immediately, thusallowing you to retain fullsteering control of your vehicleand, providing there is sufficientspace, will enable you to avoidobstacles and bring the vehicleto a quiet stop.

We recommend that youfamiliarize yourself with thisbraking technique. However, avoid taking any unnecessaryrisks.

    Braking with ABS

On vehicles with ABS, the wheelswill not lock and slide when youpress down hard on the brakepedal. The ABS automaticallyreleases and reapplies the frontand rear brakes independentlywhenever the wheels start to lock. When this happens, you will feel

the brake pedal pulse. This pulsemay be unfamiliar feeling, but it isa normal indication that the ABS isworking as designed.

Do not pump the brake pedal ofvehicles with ABS.

Never hold the steering wheel to

the extreme right or the extremeleft for more than a few secondswhen the engine is running. Thisaction could damage the powersteering pump.

    Speed sensitive steering

The steering in your vehicle isspeed sensitive. At high speeds, steering assist will decrease toimprove steering feel. At lowerspeeds, maneuverability will beincreased.

If the amount of effort required to

steer your vehicle changes at aconstant vehicle speed, have thepower steering system checked byyour dealer or a qualified servicetechnician.

    UNDERSTANDING THE

    TRACTION-LOK

    REAR AXLE(IF EQUIPPED)

This axle provides added tractionon slipper y surfaces, particularlywhen one or more wheels are on asurface with poor traction.

Extended use of other thanmatching size tires on a

Traction-Lok rear axle couldresult in a permanent reduction ineffectiveness. This loss ofeffectiveness does not affectnormal driving and should not benoticeable to the driver.

    To avoid injury, never run

the engine with one wheeloff the ground, such as whenchanging a tire.

    AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM (IFEQUIPPED)

The air suspension system isdesigned to improve ride, handlingand general vehicle performancefor static, on and off road drivingconditions.

The load leveling feature of the airsuspension system automaticallykeeps the vehicle at a constantlevel if a load is added or removedfrom the vehicle.

The height adjustment feature(4x4 air suspension system only)automatically controls the vehicleheight over a range ofapproximately 5 cm (2 in) basedon vehicle speed, ignition position

and selection of two or four-wheel

drive modes. The air suspension system placesthe vehicle at its lowest height toprovide easy entry and exit whenthe vehicle is parked, the ignitionis turned off and all doors areclosed.

    The air suspension system raises

the vehicle approximately 2.5 cm(1 in) to its normal ride positionwhen the ignition is turned on, thetransmission is initially shifted intothe drive or reverse mode and alldoors are closed.

In 4WD Low, the air suspensionsystem raises the vehicle an

additional 2.5 cm (1 in) above thenormal ride height to improvevehicle ground clearance. However,if the vehicle speed exceeds 40km/h (25 mph), the system willlower the vehicle to its normal rideheight to maximize ride comfort. The vehicle will raise again if

vehicle speed is less than 13 km/h(8 mph) for one minute. In 4WDLow, do not exceed 56 km/h (35mph).

As a safety consideration, whenever a door is opened(including the liftgate and liftgateglass) the system memorizes and

maintains the height at themoment the door was opened. Thesystem will maintain this heightuntil all doors are closed or untilvehicle speed exceeds 16 km/h (10mph).
