Page 2: Expedition to Antartica

Dear UCLA Alumni and Friends,

“Everything wears an aspect of unreality,” Ernest Shackleton wrote. “Icebergs hangupside-down in the sky, the land appears as layers of silvery or golden cloud, cloud bankslook like land, and icebergs masquerade as islands.” This is Antarctica, Earth’s last frontier.Amid the fantastically shaped icebergs, penguin rookeries and breaching whales, normalhuman scales and reference points disappear. This is nature in its most pristine form.

Today, we are proud to introduce a unique itinerary to this untouched wilderness aboardthe M.S. LE DIAMANT, one of the world’s most celebrated small cruise ships. This intimatevessel creates a luxurious ambiance for passengers, who are comfortably accommodatedin deluxe outside staterooms.

To enhance your Antarctic experience, an expert expedition team of naturalists areavailable to guide you on excursions ashore. Under their direction, you will board sturdyZodiac craft for landings on rocky shores and beaches to observe the antics ofAntarctica’s bountiful wildlife—penguins and seals, especially, are unafraid of humanvisitors—and discover the secrets of the White Continent.

In addition, we are pleased to inform you that UCLA Professor Peter Narinsfrom the Department of Physiological Science and Ecology and EvolutionaryBiology, will join us on this cruise. Peter teaches courses on the diversity oforganisms, sensory physiology and animal communication. He has studiedkrill in Antarctica, and has won UCLA’s Distinguished Faculty TeachingAward and the Gold Shield Faculty Prize.

Having traveled on this exact same trip this year, I can assure you an unbelievableexperience awaits. Call me personally to learn more about this unique destination, andsee Antarctica now, in its unspoiled state.

Sincerely,

Christel PailetDirector, Alumni Travel

CRUISING ANTARCTICASunday, February 14 toFriday, February 19The ship cruises below the 60th parallel to theouter shores and islands of the AntarcticPeninsula, the world’s last frontier. Here, explore Earth’s most pristine wilderness, wheretowering mountains of ice and lava createabrupt coastlines and islands, and constantlychanging patterns of ice stretch as far as theeye can see. In this seemingly harshenvironment, a vast array of wildlifeflourishes, including millions of penguins, countless seabirds and thousands of seals andwhales. From spectacular volcanic topographyand majestic glaciers to fascinating wildlifeand historic outposts, this itineraryincorporates the following destinations for the

complete Antarctica experience.Deception Island is actually the rim of amassive volcano that encircles a crater lakeknown as Port Foster. The ship enters PortFoster through dramatic Neptune’s Bellows, asublime harbor ringed by snowcapped peaksand sheer cliffs. In Pendulum Cove, you may, conditions permitting, have the opportunity toswim in its steaming, geothermally heatedpools. On Baily Head, see a colony of aquarter of a million chinstrap penguins beforewalking along the black sand beaches ofTelefon Bay to nearby craters, which offerfascinating insight into the volcanic activitythat created the island and played a pivotalrole in the natural history of the region.

In Paradise Bay, awesome cliffs of ice descendfrom the surrounding mountains into thefloating iceberg–laden waters along thewestern coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.Named by 19th-century whalers who soughtshelter in its coves, Paradise Bay is an idealsanctuary for marine wildlife includinghumpback whales, crabeater seals andCape petrels. Listen for the low rumbling ofRudolf Glacier as it calves chunks of ice intoNeko Harbor, one of the most dramatic andspectacular sights in Antarctica. Named for anearly 20th-century floating whaling factory, the harbor is surrounded by soaring glaciersand snow-covered mountains. Here, makeyour first “continental landing” in Antarctica.

Cruise through breathtaking, glacier-linedNeumayer Channel to Port Lockroy.Originally constructed in 1944 by aneight-man team as an intelligence post for

In contrast to sociable Adélie penguins who congregate in large colonies, the leopard seal cherishes hissolitude and independence.

AMERICA AND ANTARCTICEXPLORATION

The intrepid deeds of such famed Europeanexplorers of Antarctica as Roald Amundsen,Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackletonhave long been related in gripping personalaccounts and in history books. Few peoplerealize, however, that Americans played asignificant role in the exploration ofAntarctica. Foremost among them wasAdmiral Richard Evelyn Byrd. Scion of adistinguished Virginia family, he led the1928-30 U.S. Antarctic expedition and, in1929, he made the first overflight of theSouth Pole. Byrd later led three additionalexpeditions to Antarctica and named a largeportion of the continent Marie Byrd Landafter his wife.

Another American prominent in theexploration of the South Polar region wasLincoln Ellsworth. This Chicago native madethe first flight across Antarctica in 1935.In the course of his journey, he discovered thecontinent’s loftiest mountain range, laternamed in his honor.

YOUR EXPEDITION TEAM

Members of the onboard expedition team areseasoned experts and naturalists who have studiedand traveled extensively in the most remoteregions of the world. CRUISING ANTARCTICASunday, February 14 to Friday, February 19The ship cruises below the 60th parallel to theouter shores and islands of the AntarcticPeninsula, the world’s last frontier. From spectacular volcanic topographyand majestic glaciers to fascinating wildlifeand historic outposts, this itineraryincorporates the following destinations for the

complete Antarctica experience. Deception Island is actually the rim of amassive volcano that encircles a crater lakeknown as Port Foster.

In Paradise Bay, awesome cliffs of ice descendfrom the surrounding mountains into thefloating iceberg–laden waters along thewestern coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.Named by 19th-century whalers who soughtshelter in its coves, Paradise Bay is an idealsanctuary for marine wildlife includinghumpback whales, crabeater seals and Cape petrels.

Cruise through breathtaking, glacier-linedNeumayer Channel to Port Lockroy.Originally constructed in 1944 by an eight-man team as an intelligence post for

M.S . LE DI A M A N T

British espionage during World War II, Port Lockroy was converted into a whalingstation and scientific base in the 1950s. It isnestled among glistening mountain peaks ashigh as 6,000 feet, and the surroundinggrounds are populated by blue-eyed shags andgentoo penguins. Gain insight into the lives ofpast explorers at the British Antarctic SurveyMuseum and send a postcard with anAntarctica postmark from the official BritishPost Office.

Just off of Port Lockroy, enjoy an excursionto the rocky shores of Jougla Point onWiencke Island. Experience this rareopportunity to view the nearly intactskeleton of a large whale, in addition to largenumbers of gentoo penguins and birdlife, particularly blue-eyed shags and kelp gulls.

Lemaire Channel, flanked by towering cliffsof glaciers that fall straight into the seabetween the Antarctic Peninsula and BoothIsland, offers views of seven majestic milesof mountains and wildlife combined withfascinating patterns of ice floes. Call atPetermann Island, the southernmost pointof your journey, and watch its thrivingrookeries of Adélie and gentoo penguinsand blue-eyed shags. Enter the Weddell Seaand spot the enormous tabular icebergs thathave broken off from the Larsen Ice Shelf.

See Brown Bluff’s 750-foot-high, rust-coloredcliffs jutting into the Antarctic Sound, andland on the shelving beach at the base of thebluff. Observe members of the area’sflourishing colony of Adélie penguins, whomay approach you for an up-close encounter.

CRUISING DRAKE PASSAGESaturday, February 20Relax and reflect onboard today as the shipturns north and crosses the Drake Passage.

DRAKE PASSAGE/CAPE HORNSunday, February 21Enjoy a lively, informative discussion with theship’s naturalists. Watch for seabirds andbreaching fin, humpback and minke whales asyou cruise across the Antarctic Convergenceand past the infamous Cape Horn, thesouthernmost tip of South America. Attendthe captain’s farewell reception this evening.
