Advantages / Benefits Disadvantages / Weaknesses Continued use of e-bikes/e-scooters in pilot companies

CROATIAN POST, Zagreb, Croatia

1x e-bicycle 1x e-tricycle 1x e-scooter

Delivery all kinds of letters and packages

They were very satisfied with the use of e-bikes. E-scooters were OK, but because of the high price, future usage is not feasible.

Using e-bikes is financially infeasible, as e-bicycles cost 5.500 EUR. In order to use e-tricycle, a few changes will have to be made to the vehicle

The company was satisfied with the electric bicycles and intends to buy 180 new Krpan e-bicycles for further use (current fleet has 2300 scooters).

CITY EX, Zagreb, Croatia

2x e-bicycle 1x e-scooter

Delivery all kinds of letters and packages

Useful as a replacement or help in areas that cannot be covered using standard bicycles

Because of the lengthy daily route of postmen (80 km) and high price (5 500 EUR) the use of e-bicycles is infeasible

They decided not to continue to use e-bikes.

DHL, Zagreb, Croatia

2x e-bicycle 1x e-tricycle

Delivery all kinds of letters and small packages

They find the tested e-vehicles very useful for small distances (a few km per day) within town center.

E-bikes required a long time for staff reorganization.

They were satisfied and will continue to use the e-bicycles in future.

COMMUNAL INSPECTORS, Zadar, Croatia

1x e-bicycle 1x e-scooter

Carrying out inspections

Use for small distances (9 km per day) in town center

E-bicycles are not useful in winter. E-scooters were OK, but beacuse of their imited range (they are particulalry difficult to use in hilly areas) they are not suitable for all parts of town.

Because of the high price, they will not use e-scooters in future, but they will continue to use e-bicycles.

No weakness

The traditional van has been almost completely replaced with e-cargobike.The e-cargobike is perfect for promoting company and fits well with the mission of the company of being an ecological print shop.

When it is raining, it is not easy to drive a fully loaded e-cargobike downhill.

Considering fuel/electricity costs, maintenance cost, insurance and salary for drivers, the results have showed that the average cost for each delivery made by e-bike is around 25% lower than for those made by van. E-bikes have been faster, more effective and less polluting, providing benefits for both citizens and delivery companies. Furthermore e-bike usage improved the image of the company. The 4-6 e-bikes completely replaced the two traditional vans

A new node (the ebikes warehouse) needs to be added in the logistic chain. Some additional logisticsissues also need to be taken into account.

The e-bike used in the pool system presented as a positive experience. The e-bike contributed to the emission and energy consumption reduction in the municipality, addressed social responsibility aspects and contributed to the increase of the municipality productivity and process efficiency.

The e-scooter was a good solution for shorter distances. It also contributed to the emission and energy consumption reduction in the company, while addressing the issue of social responsibility

In general the experience was not very positive. The e-scooter was used on urban routes where the distances were smaller. However insituations, the driver had to take the ewith him along the street, starting and stopping for very short distances. This caused the battery to loose its autonomy very fast, forcingreturn to the services on foot, since he couldcharge the battery anywhere elsenegative factor is that due to the batteries, the e-scooter is heavier than a regular scooter.

The introduction of an e-scooter allowed the company to: - replace some services by bike, running longer distances in a shorter time; - increase their services while respecting the initial concept (ecologic deliveries). Regarding the e-cargo-bike, the experience has been very positive. The electric support of the cargo bike provides more efficient deliveries, reliability and confort.

Initially, the e-scooter was used in deliveries to the outskirts of Lisbon. However, the low autonomy of the battery along with high recharge periods was not feasible. The main disadvantages were high recharge time (3 to 6 hours), high purchase cost, and few safe parking spots in the city.

o Negative attitude of employees towards the use of e-bikes/e-scooters

o Technical problems, malfunctions (e.g. batteries, flat tires, broken pedals, etc.)

o The low autonomy and long period of battery recharge that do not allow deliveries in the outskirts of the city or over longer distances in rural area

o Weather conditions (bad conditions in using in winter time)

o Weight of e-bike/e-scooter

6 SUMMARY

The use of e-bikes and e-scooters by pilot companies has, in most cases, elicited a positive response, as evidenced by the results. Because of the numerous benefits, the majority of the pilot companies have decided to continue using e-bikes / e-scooters in the future. The electric vehicles tested by pilot companies were:

o e-bicycles (in most cases), o e-tricycles o e-scooters o e-cargobikes.

The type of electric vehicle(s) tested was chosen based on the activities, enterprises or services done by the various companies. In most cases, the pilot companies were involved in the delivery of various goods, letters and small packages, food, tobacco products, office materials, and specific services (home care services for elderly and disabled people living at home). The pilot companies have identified and recognized the advantages and benefits of using e-bikes and e-scooters for their companies, their business, their customers and for the environment in which they carry out their business. According to the various companies, the key benefits/advantages were:

o cost savings, o better quality of provided services, o good feedback from clients, o promotion of pilot company.

Out of the 38 participating pilot companies testing e-bikes and e-scooters as a means to carry out daily deliveries (materials, food and other services), 27 companies (71%) decided to continue using e-bikes and e-scooters in the future. 11 companies (29%) decided not to continue using e-bikes/e-scooters.
