FIBER OPTIC IV DROP SENSOR
First prototype
Second prototype
Third prototype
Research and development of a fiber optic volumetric drop sensor. Illustrated are threeexperimental fabrication stages of the fiber optic components, resulting in an operationalprototype of the volumetric drop sensor.
The prototype consists of four opposing stacked fiber optic components which create four thinbeams of light. Drops from the cannula in a drip chamber of an intravenous delivery set fallthrough the four light beams sequentially, attenuating each light signal. An algorithm calculatesthe volume of each falling drop, counts the drops fallen over time and sums the result for fluidvolume being delivered to the patient.

ELECTROCHEMICAL PUMP
Problem: Previous door latch only required a single motion toopen door on linear peristaltic pump. Some accidental dooropenings allowed IV fluid to free flow.
Solution: Retrofit existing door latch with formed sheet metalpart, resulting in a two-motion action to unlatch door.
First motion: Push spring loaded latch button “down”, movingsheet metal part with bar over door frame shelf.
Second motion: Push latch button “in” to rotate latch, exposinglatch handle to complete latch rotation thus allowing door topivot open.
IVAC Corporation
This latch was later employed in IVAC’s series 560 and 570 Linear Peristaltic Pumps
