On its inaugural voyage, the ms Koningsdam launched in the Mediterranean, but this winter look for itineraries departing from Fort Lauderdale with visits to Grand Turk, Curacao, Aruba, Grand Cayman, Bonaire and the Mexican port of Cozumel.

HISTORIC AND STYLISH: Holland America Line’s, ms KoningsdamBy Waheeda Harris

Despite following long-standing traditions of being christened by a member of the Dutch Royal Family, in this case by Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, Holland America Line’s newest addition, the ms Koningsdam, is making its mark in the 21st century with its contemporary style, dining and entertainment.

The 2,650-passenger ship’s music-inspired design, by Adam D. Tihany, is decidedly modern: shiny hardwoods resembling polished musical instruments are used throughout while four decks are named for composers: Beethoven, Gershwin, Mozart and Schubert. Light-filled public spaces display a mix of mariner and music-influenced art work – and pop culture junkies like myself will appreciate Holland America Line honouring its hometown of Seattle with art celebrating Jimi Hendrix.

Spacious staterooms feature plenty of storage and the latest technology with on-demand movies, television series and music, and a traditional addition: a pair of wood deck chairs on the balcony reminiscent of the 1920s that is a perfect place to catch a breeze and an afternoon nap.

The popular Grand Dutch Cafe is the place to be - it becomes my daily habit: a new addition to Holland America Line’s food offerings, the crisp blue and orange décor encourages my devotion to pannenkoeken, Dutch crepes with blueberry sauce and powdered sugar. Holland America Line standards such as Tamarind, Lido Market and Pinnacle Grill are included along with new additions like Sel de Mer brasserie, Dive-In burgers, Gelato, and the New York Deli & Pizza which becomes my go-to for a bagel breakfast sandwich.

The intimate Culinary Arts Center is a new concept for cruise ships. Guests are welcomed to experience an exclusive five course, farm-to-table inspired menu created by Canadian chef Tomas Kargol and his team. Myself and fellow diners crowd around the open kitchen, watching the chefs chop, stir and plate courses, and are reminded we can return for cooking classes.

Key partnerships with BBC Earth, Billboard, Lincoln Center and B.B. King’s Blues Club, all found in the Music Walk, offer a wide range of musical styles for evening entertainment. The two-storey-high World Stage, features a 270-degree LED screen making the exclusive screening of BBC Earth’s Frozen Planet a multi-sensory treat. The film reveals antics and challenges of Arctic and Antarctica’s creatures, punctuated with a soundtrack created by a live orchestra and the gasps and laughter of an appreciative audience.

Passengers who revel in cruising’s heyday will appreciate spending time in the ms Koningsdam’s elegantly styled Crow’s Nest at the top of the ship to watch the world glide by as much as watching a movie on the Lido pool deck’s giant screen with a sweet sundae from the Gelato ice cream bar.
