In developing this site, the course of the Grand Canal was rerouted
to become a central unifying element. The canal flows from the
Theodore Roosevelt Dam completed in 1911 to control the erratic
flow of the Salt River and to harness water for irrigation. The dam
and its canals were key in the development of central Arizona. The
Grand site is a microcosm of the desert region and the ability to
shepherd the resources that sustain the 4.3 million inhabitants of
the Valley of the Sun.
