It will be three days of fun, laughter, music, history, fireworks, and pampering as we travel to Staunton, Virginia for the 4th of July weekend. Our hotel for two nights will be the historic Stonewall Jackson Hotel, one of Virginias finest hotels. What a great way to celebrate the 4th of July! Saturday, July 3rd - This morning we depart for Staunton, stopping along the way for a delicious lunch before arriving at Highland, the historic home of the 5th President of the United States, James Mon- roe. Monroe is noted for oversee- ing the westward expansion of our country and strengthening the American foreign policy through the Monroe Doctrine. Even if you visited in the past, this tour has a whole new story to tell. Between a fire that destroyed the main home and changes made by owners aſter Monroe, misunderstand- ings have surrounded the site for years. It is only recently that histo- rians and archaeologists have begun to uncover Highlands and Monroes true past. This will be quite an interesng tour, for sure! Aſterwards we will check into our home for the next two nights, the Stonewall Jackson Hotel, where you can sit, relax and enjoy the am- biance of this historic hotel with its marble floors, chandeliers, wall sconces and original Wurlitzer or- gan or enjoy their indoor pool, fit- ness facility and giſt shop. You can treat yourself to a leisurely morning prior to our tour of the Presbyterian Manse, birthplace of our 28th President, Woodrow Wilson who led us through WWI and is frequently ranked as one of the naon's greatest presidents by historians. On our tour interpreters will take us back to 1856, the year when Wilson was born and discuss his family, upbringing, and the lifestyle of the period. Next youll be able to tour the Presiden- al Library and Museum which explores President Wilson's life and legacy. Wilsons original 1919 Pierce-Arrow limousine and a recreat- ed World War I trench complete with lights and sound make for an interesng tour. The remainder of the day is yours: do a lile shopping, explore this quaint lile town, visit local museums, see a play at American Shakespeare Centers Blackfriar Theatre, relax at the hotel, have coffee at a local shop or go to the park to enjoy their annual parade and craſt vendors. Monday, July 5th - Enjoy a delightful breakfast before setting out for home but not without a couple stops along the say. Our first stop will be at Monticello, home of Thom-as Jefferson—author of the Declaration of Independence and the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom, 3rd Presi-dent of the United States, and founder of the University of Virginia. Monticello is particularly special because it is the only U.S. presiden-tial and private home on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Our tour of this grand mountaintop home and it’s natural surroundings will give us the opportunity to better understand history and this genius of a man, Thomas Jefferson. You’ll also enjoy seeing the many inno-vative gadgets that he devised through the years that now fill the main floor of his home.

Afterwards we’ll enjoy lunch at the historic Michie Tavern located next to Monticello. In the 18th- century, this tavern was the social center of the community and maintains that rustic tavern setting to this day, down to the servers dressed in period attire. After lunch you can take a little bit

of time to browse the two floors of the General Store housed in the 1797 Meadow Run Grist Mill or visit the metal smith and artisan lo-cated on the grounds. . . or you can sit down for a little bit and enjoy the beauty of the mountains. By midafternoon we’ll continue our way home with lots of great memories of a unique 4th of July cele-bration. (B, L)
