What is Expanded Discovery?

Expanded Discovery involves utilizing additional strategies such as internships and work experiences to gain additional information to enhance initial discovery.

Utilizing a work experiencing to further understand

who is the person from a work perspective:

• Interests

• Conditions

• Contributions

4The “Why” of Work Experiences and Internships as Expanded Discovery• To assure a “no fail” experience

• To provide a lens for developing and translating work skills

• To affirm or explore an area(s) of potential interest

• To determine the conditions that might be necessary for success

• To assist employers (and counselors?) to see competence

How to Use Expanded Discovery?

• Currently work experiences/internships are used to learn more about capability

• Typically this is evaluative: success/failure

• Through the lens of Expanded Discovery, an individual cannot fail a work experience – we are learning more about what works and what doesn’t work for that individual

How are Internships Determined?

• Initial Discovery – all participants receive Discovery as a foundation service

• Internship Plan or Job Development Plan – all participants participate in a Internship Plan or Job Development Plan at the end of Discovery to determine whether Expanded Discovery is needed

• Individual Choice – all participant may choose multiple internships or they may choose job development for employment. The type of internship is negotiated with participants.

Based on interests, contributions, conditions and desired outcomes of participant

• Mentorship

Types of Matched Internships

Standard Internship: Duties reflect job descriptions in the business

Adapted Internship: Duties are carved from typical job descriptions

Customized Internship: Duties are determined through an Employer Needs/Benefits Analysis

Hybrid Internship: Duties are customized by employer reflecting the businesses hiring culture

Self-Employment Internship: Under development, will reflect micro-enterprise start-up

• Weekly/monthly reviews • Internship Support Plan

What isn’t matched is supported. Becomes blueprint for Employment Support Plan if job

• Need for participant’s to learn financial literacy

What Are Some Cautions?

• Using Expanded Discovery as an ends, not a means to an end (Jobs, Careers)

• Balancing individual choice and encouraging more experience

• Letting employers use this as an employee try-out Potential to hire is a key discussion point

• Keep bar high for internship site selection Diversity of jobs, locations Matches the desired outcome of the individual

Why is Expanded Discovery Important?

• The information learned through expanded discovery supports achieving long term career goals

• Creates opportunities for employers to work with individuals in areas where they are more likely to be working in an area of strength/interest

• Develops skills, confidence, clarity on match and conditions for success

• Creates environment for families to get comfortable with work and work impacts

What Can You Do?

• Use Work Experiences and Expanded Discovery • Consider matching to work experiences and customizing

work experiences (not just general)• Be purposeful about work experiences – must relate

back to the desired outcomes for the individual• Be strategic when developing business partner sites –

employers appreciate knowing that an internship is set up because of the potential for an match

• Ongoing education and training for staff is critical• Encourage and share high expectations for career

focused jobs as EARLY as possible!!
