A Message from the President:Ann Asberry

I’ve been reading the EAA Homepage on theWeb. It is really a gold mine of information.See it at: www.eaa.org

The big fly-in is at hand, Airventure 2000. Iknow many of you are planning the trip to“Mecca”. This year’s theme is “Speed”. Itappears a lot of fast planes are planning somedemonstrations and static displays. Of coursethat is an understatement. There will be theusual and the unusual.

The EAA airventure.org home page offers alisting of all 500 forums with times and map locations and a way to sort through it based on your interest, what days you areattending, and even by the speaker. Someone has really been doing a lot of homework. Of course that is the heart and soul ofEAA anyway, volunteers doing all the tasks that add up to the greatest show on earth.

Something of interest, that caught my eye, is the Medical Forums. While these are aimed at Medical professionals, laypersons may gain some insight. Included is “The 15 medical conditions that disqualify a person from holding an FAAmedical certificate”. On the web site I read about a young man who always wanted to fly but found out at age 17 he was aninsulin dependent diabetic. We all know that is an automatic disqualification for a medical…..NOT so! He found out, whileattending an information forum last year that a diabetic can apply for a waiver, something unheard of not too many years ago.Long story short, the man obtained his license and is piloting his 172 into Oshkosh this year.

At the August meeting I would like for some of you that go to Oshkosh this year to share your interesting stories with the restof the Chapter.

June 17th the weather gods decided to not smile on McKinney airport and the planned poker run organized by Chapter 1246.We did have a great hamburger cook out and lots of yummy desserts. The organizers allowed everyone to try to solve theclues identifying airports for the poker run. A drawing was held and one prize was given to the first with correct answers. Theclues were very hard, but a lot of people figured them out with the help of a sectional and a little creative thinking. The pokerrun will be rescheduled later in the year. I sure hope more of our members show up at that time. By my count only 1, yes Isaid 1, EAA 168 member, that does not have dual membership in both Chapters, attended the event. Thanks to Sam Cooperfor helping coordinate some of the activity.

I wish you blue skies and tail winds (and a little less rain on the week-ends)

Glastar ContinuedBy Bert Feller

We were on Lucky’s (Aircraft Salvage of Dallas) waitinglist for an engine for about a year, and the first one tobecome available was a Lycoming IO 360 B1B. This wasmore engine than I wanted, but we managed to cram it andall the accessories into the confined space. I had tofabricate several special parts (induction, oil cooler etc.)because of space requirements since the available optionswould not fit. Originally, the engine was turbochargedand had a constant speed prop, but these I had removedbecause of budget constraints.

The first flight of about 30 minutes was uneventful andwent well. I experienced a heavy left wing, which Iattribute to a difference in the angle of incidence betweenthe two wings of 0.6 degrees. To correct this problem, Iinstalled a small trim tab on the right aileron. I also had atiny fuel leak, in a very hard to get-to place inside thefuselage, which took several hours just to tighten a flaredfitting. For the time being, we will leave the originalfactory applied gel-coat and the alclad aluminum as theexterior, with just some vinyl stripes to compliment theunpainted surfaces. Eventually, we may paint it. Janicegets the credit for the upholstery and the seats, I think shedid a great job (interior to be completed later). Since shewas not excited with the task of using the bucking bar for

the rivets, shetook over thetask of using thegun.

My appreciationis extended toOwen Bruce(tech counselor)and Mel & AnnAsberry (flightadvisory andDAR). Thanksto Stoddard. The manualswere very goodand the qualityof the parts towork with were

excellent. Needless to say, this was a great learningexperience. This is a fine airplane with goodcharacteristics and very pleasurable to fly.

Chapter 168’s Weekend onGalveston Island

By Marvin Brott

The June 10th weekend trip to Galveston Island was a bigsuccess even if we had to drive due to really poor weather.Between clear skies, that made us think we should haveflown, we drove through some really bad rain.

On Saturday morning we toured the outstanding MoodyGardens and during the afternoon we made it to the realhot spot of Galveston, the Lone Star Flight Museum. While at the gardens we went to the IMAX 3D theater andsaw the Cirque du Soleil-Journey of Man. If you ever getthe opportunity to see this film, jump on it.

When you enter the main display of the Lone Star FightMuseum, you note the restoration of a B-24 Liberator. Asit turns out, it is not a Liberator. Initially the Navyordered B-24s (total 997) for long range, land based, strategic reconnaissance, designated PB4Y-1. Then theNavy felt they needed a more specialized aircraft so thePB4Y-2 was ordered. That was what we were looking at.It was based on the B-24, yet the design changes includedlengthening the forward fuselage by 7 feet, rearranging thearmament, and the change that caught our eye, the singletail rudder. Some 736 were built. The new and attachedTexas Aviation Hall of Fame was excellent. Bottom line,if you get the opportunity, go see this museum.

With the flexibility of the cars on Sunday morning wewent to the Houston Space Center. Wow, were wedisappointed. We paid our $14 to be welcomed by anamusement park. If you wanted to scale a mountain, thenyou got your moneys worth. Finally, I asked informationif they had any of the space capsules on display. Theypointed me to an area that represented about 20% of theentire building. I am sure they are competing with the Airand Space Museum, the Kennedy Space Center and theKansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson forartifacts. Just a note, after sitting on the bottom of theAtlantic Ocean from 1961 until 1999, I’ll bet that Houstonwill not be displaying the recently recovered and restoredLiberty Bell 7. Bottom line; don’t waste your time ormoney on this space center. One of my pet peeves iswhen a museum loses it direction and starts putting inamusement parks and/or youth learning centers. I am notagainst these youth oriented activities and we certainlyneed them, but when they displace the displaying of majormuseum quality artifacts we have lost the cause. There isa time and place for both.

Our group picture included Marv and Pat Brott, KenNordman, Dick and Barbara Flunker, Don Christiansen,Ann and Bo Bauereis, David Cheek, and Mel and AnnAsberry. Thanks Don for setting this weekend up.

Mike Hoye’s Pober Pixie IIPhotos by Owen Bruce

By Marvin Brott from Mike Hoye

For several months David Carter has been mentioning tome that Mike Hoye was building a two place Pober Pixie.I really did not understand the significance until OwenBruce stopped by to show me some pictures. Based oninformation from Owen and a phone call to Mike, thefollowing is a brief outline of the development of this two-place Pixie.

The story starts during the 1970s when bi-planes like theStarduster were consistently winning Grand ChampionOshkosh and VW powered aircraft were the rage, Sonerai,KRs and even the prototype Vari Eze. Paul Pobereznyhad designed the EAA Acro Sport bi-plane so to follow uphe decided to design a light-weight parasol plane with aVW engine. It was called the Pober Pixie of which anumber were built, many with Continental engines. ThePixie was really good looking and reminded you ofsomething from the 1930s, like the Heath Parasol.

Now we step up to 1989 when Mike gives EAAheadquarters a call and indicates that he is interested in thePixie but would like to build a two-place version. This isa request that every single place designer eventuallyreceives (RV, Sonerai, KR, etc.). He was put in contactwith Paul Poberezny who said, “just happens we weredesigning a two place version but it was put on the backshelf.” The very basic fuselage had been tack weldedtogether and then hung on the museum wall, as it is seenin some old photos. Once Paul determined that Mike hadthe talent to complete the project, he offered whateverthey had in the way of parts and his design assistance tosee the project to completion. So Mike was going to

finally complete what was once started in the 1970s.About a year later Mike went to the Oshkosh Fly-In andwhile he was there picked up the fuselage and some tailfeathers they had found in the back room. Over the nextten years he continued to correspond with Paul and metwith him several times while he was here in Dallas. Yetthe real task was on Mike’s back to finish the design andmake it happen. Remember, this was three stages downon the difficultly scale in that it was not a kit, it was not abuild from plans but it was a design a little then build alittle.

This month Mike made the first flight out of Air Park Eastand reported no problems. In fact it flew perfectly. Rightnow he has about ten hours on it. There is not enoughtime to get it ready for this year’s Oshkosh, but plans callfor getting there next year. Now that should be worthwaiting for to see the attention it gets at Oshkosh. Mikeindicated that this Pixie II is very similar in many respectsto the J3 Cub with respect to size, flight handling andspeeds. The stall speed is somewhere around 35 mph.

This is a basic VFR airplane with a Lycoming O-235engine (see picture above). I know you can’t tell from thepictures but Owen Bruce assures me that Mike did anabsolutely outstanding job with respect to detail and finish(check the well done panel). Like a lot of really nicehomebuilts, this was Mike’s first effort, yet he is nostranger to aviation. He has been one of Chapter 168’sflight advisors for the last several years. Finally, checkout the pixie on the tail (similar to the pixies on the singleplace tails) and the N number. The P is for Poberezny andthe H is Hoye. I am not sure what the X37 portion of thenumber means but we will find out. We will get a morecomplete story from Mike and hopefully have him give apresentation at a chapter meeting.

Sherman Young Eagles Rally

Please thank members of 168 that assisted in our YoungEagle event at Sherman. We even provided pizza, but nexttime we will have to double our order. Many hungryvolunteers. We flew 43 children. A little disappointing butgood. I am going to have to figure a way to better get theword out. The local paper is not much help. DonChristiansen, Dick Flunker, Bo Bauereis, and RichardRobbins provided flights. Mel assisted with ground work.Their efforts are credited to 168. As a side, BillyDollarhide got a thrill of a ride with Dick in his RV-6A.

Mark your calendars for September 16. We will beholding a Young Eagle event in conjunction withSherman's Arts Fest. This will be the third year we havedone this.

Fitting the CanopyBy Marvin Brott

During April, I completed the sliding canopy on my RV-8so I thought while it is fresh I would share myexperiences. I followed the instructions and all the hintsfrom the RV List and found that the cutting and fittingprocess was not all that bad, but it was a little stressful.Stressful only because if you crack the canopy duringcutting or drilling, you are out 800 dollars. In addition, you want the completed canopy to look good since it is the“eye” of the airplane. The canopy gets everyone'sattention at the airport.

Helpful hints for cutting and drilling the Plexiglas canopy:

1. It is recommended to minimize the heat build up whilecutting with the cut off wheel. Seems the heat buildup will cause stress build-ups (and potential cracking).George Orndorf recommends using many low speedpasses rather than a single high-speed pass. I used adie grinder (fairly high speed) and typically a singlepass then followed up with a belt sander to clean upthe edge. My hope is that I did not generate anypotential cracks. When contemplating that first cut onthe canopy, it seems to emulate the cutting of theHope diamond. One bad cut and the thing isdestroyed. Don’t worry, its not that bad.

2. Everyone recommends that the cutting and drillingprocess be done at 70 degrees or more. Initially cutoff only the flange right at the flange to canopyintersection. I cut up a little and ran a little short ofplexi overhang on the frame. How much overhang ofthe plexi is needed on the frame bows? I left about1/8 inch.

3. When drilling through the skirt into the Plexiglas, make sure everything is solidly backed by the tubeand then make the initial hole with a standard #40 drillbit. Keep it straight and don't force. Go slow!Follow up with the big plexi bits that you get fromAvery Tool. Don’t drill the plexi while it is underANY stress.

4. You will need help. I must have put the canopy on theframe for trial cuts at least fifty times, or least itseemed like that many. Press in firmly on the sides ofthe canopy before each measurement/marking forcutting. The shape will change as the sides come fullyinward against the fuselage. Lots of clamps will help.Measure thrice, cut once.

5. Make sure that symmetrical marking lines are put onthe canopy before the flange is cut off. It is reallyhard to determine symmetry without the marks.

6. As for determining the cuts, it is important to try andhold the sides in while doing any drilling. Clamp asmuch as possible to the frame. Keep checkingbecause the front or back may want to creep up.

7. The steel frame will warp when welded and may needto be bent to fit. Mine fit very well but I did use someshims between the skirt and frame.

So the bottom line is that the fear factor of working on thecanopy is much exaggerated. It took me about six weeksof work to get the entire canopy frame, plexi and skirtinstalled to my liking. The West System of epoxy, theFiber Fil finishing material and carbon fiber were used tofinish the skirt and front frame.

In order to get you off on the right step, the following area few prerequisites for achieving perfect canopy PhilArter, an RV-8 builder.

# 1. Incense. Lots and lots of incense.# 2. Candles. Or incensed candles. (make sure all thinners are

tightly sealed first).# 3. Whale music. Or Womb music. Any mood tape, in fact.# 4. Chanting mantras is good. Something like "Ohmmmm" or

alternately, "pleases don't crack please don't crack".# 5. Clothing optional. Many fine canopies have been drilled

armed only with a drill and a smile. Not recommended forthose in colder realms unless you have lots and lots of rugs.

# 6, Talk to your canopy. Explain in advance each step, whatyou are going to do, being sure to reaffirm your calm witheach explanation. What's The Value of One Member?By Dick Zander, EAA Chapter 782, Vancouver, WA

Ten faithful Members standing in a line,One disliked the President, then there were nine.

Nine ambitious Members offered to work late,One forgot his promise, then there were eight.

Eight creative Members had ideas good as heaven,One lost enthusiasm, then there were seven.

Seven loyal Members got into a fix,They quarreled over programs, then there were six.

Six Members remained with the spirit and drive,One moved away, then there were five.

Five steadfast Members wished there were more,One became indifferent, then there were four.

Four cheerful Members who never disagree,'Til one complained of meetings, then there were three.

Three eager Members! What do they do?One got discouraged, then there were two.

Two lonely Members, our rhyme is nearly done,One joined the Elks, then there was one.

One faithful Member was feeling rather blue,Met with a neighbor, then there was two.

Two earnest Members, each enrolled one more,Doubling their number, then there was four.

Four determined Members just couldn't wait,'Til each won another, then there was eight.

Eight EXCITED Members signed up sixteen more,In another six verses, there'll be a thousand twenty-four!
