SPACES has left a uniquely indelible mark in the history of alternative spaces in the

United States, the region, and certainly in Ohio. As one of the sole remaining artists-

run alternative spaces in Ohio—initially born in the 70s specifically out of a need to

address artists—it has grown and transformed and come to be SO MUCH MORE.

SPACES is an advocate for artists, artwork, ideas, community knowledge, and the

way in which the arts can truly transform people's lives. People still talk about their

favorite AH HA SPACES moments. Although SPACES has changed and grown, it has

the soul of that organization that was formed in the late 1970s still intact. It informs

all that has come after and all that exists currently and is still to come in the future.

absurdThat work is horrible. Disturbing. Contemptible. Ugly.Obscene. Absurd. Brainless.

Critics used these words to describe the work ofMonet,Van Gogh, Picasso, Pollock, andWarhol. Initially,all were dismissed for their innovation and experimen-tation. All have now been accepted as masters. Yet,their careers began with modesty at small galleries.Today, SPACES is often the first place an artist is able toshow a significant body of work.

When asked about SPACES, I talk about the artist.SPACES gives artists the opportunity to explore, inno-vate, and experiment,without commercial constraints.Sometimes artists present work that is provocative, ex-citing, and beautiful. And sometimes not. Yet, there isinherent value in these risks and in providing a venuefor innovation. And experimentation. And provocation.

Recently, one artist accomplished these values. Forthe exhibition Storage Space, Young Kim createdmeticu-lously screened clay-dust portraits on perfect yet fragilebeds of fine salt. The slightest touch would affect thesepieces. During the opening, a child ran across one of thebeds. The artist, witnessing the disturbance,was notupset. Instead, this “accident” actually demonstratedthe fragile and temporal quality of his work. At the clos-ing, staff simply swept up the salt and clay.

Many who experienced Storage Space were deeplytouched by the quiet, contemplative power of Kim’spiece. In its labor-intensive method and fleeting nature,Kim presented work that was not meant for a commer-cial setting. It is a perfect example of what SPACESaspires to exhibit.

SPACES has thrived for 30 years through the toil,support, and enthusiasm of countless people andorganizations, and we are forever indebted to our insti-tutional funders, especially The Cleveland Foundation,The George Gund Foundation, the Ohio Arts Council,and The AndyWarhol Foundation for the Visual Arts—as well as the other donors listed in this catalogue.

SPACES greatly appreciates the generosity of Peter B.Lewis, our single largest individual donor. Special recog-nition also goes to Toby Devan Lewis, who provides

Susan established programsthat have positioned SPACES as a nationally and inter-nationally-recognized alternative art institution.Wegive her many thanks for her devotion and assistancewith this catalogue.

In closing, I would like to remember two artists whowere very special to SPACES and who recently lost theirlives:Masumi Hayashi and Lilian Tyrrell. Their personaland professional impact on our community and the artworld will live on. In their spirit and memory, SPACESwill continue to celebrate artists.

Everyone looks, acts, and feels differently than they did 30 years ago.

We live in the immediate moment of now, behaving and looking in

a way that is unique to today. On the other hand, in a sense, each

of us has not changed, since the blueprint of our DNA remains the

same. And our public selves—how people identify and define us—

is not just of today, but rooted in their experience of us in the past.

Friends, family, colleagues recognize not just a single past, but a

number of pasts, as people have encountered and interacted with

us at different points in time and for different amounts of time. In

a way, then,we do not have a single identity, but an identity that is

particular and distinct for everyone we know.

Organizations are much the same.Those of us who have known

SPACES for more than 20 of its 30 years, including the author of this

essay, current Board member Jeff Chiplis, former Director Susan

Channing, and major regional artists such as Brinsley Tyrrell, Craig

Lucas, Laila Voss, and Angelica Pozo (all former or current Board

members) understand SPACES in a different way than recent art

school graduates. To old-timers, SPACES is still an artist-run organiza-

tion, embedded in the alternative organization-building wave of the

1970s that grew out of the counter-culture of the 1960s. To young

artists, SPACES probably looks and feels a lot like the establishment

—perhaps a sympathetic establishment and a welcoming establish-

ment, but one of the gate-keepers of cultural validation in the

region, none-the-less.

Yet, however established SPACES has become through its exhibi-

tion record; its movement into a national leadership position in the

culture of artists’ organizations; its responsiveness to changes in

the direction, content, and social structure of art today, SPACES’

alternative DNA remains a powerful organizing foundation. A

primary imperative of the Board of Trustees—to have as many

members who are artists as members with other expertise—has

enabled SPACES to move forward and embrace its future, as the

steadfast loyalty of the artist community has acted as a guardian

of its traditions.

In 1998, the first 20 years of the organization were chronicled in

Howling at the Edge of a Renaissance: SPACES and Alternative Art in

Cleveland. As an exhibition, catalogue, and history, it told the story

of the birth and adolescence of an alternative organization. This

project, Living in Your Imagination, tells of the next 10 years, of a

maturing organization that, responsibly and smilingly, insists on

maintaining its spark of wonder.

SPACELab

SPACES is very open not only to new ideas

(which may include drilling holes in the floor or

constructing elements right over the reception

desk area and into the office) but the staff and

board are also sensitive and accommodating to

the time that it takes to actually create a site-

specific installation. Artists have 24-hour access

if necessary, a free place to sleep, shower, etc,

if needed, for the duration of the installation or

de-installation. These factors actually make it

possible for ambitious projects to be explored

and realized.

Coincident to the flush of excitement that followedthe 20th Anniversary celebration in the fall of 1998,SPACES embarked upon a year that changed its futuremore than any other since the building purchase in1990. In small events and large surprises, by reflectivechoice and by external pressure, SPACES transformed.

As 1998 closed,word circulated within the Clevelandarts community that the New Organization for theVisual Arts (NOVA) would soon cease operations. Hav-ing had a presence in Cleveland for 26 years, NOVA hadbeen both competitive and complimentary to SPACES’mission. Once having membership that approached1,000, the organization had been in decline in its lastfew years, and finally dissolved under pressure of in-creasing debt from a line of credit.

A measure of that decline was that when the SPACESBoard faced the possibility of absorbing NOVA’s pro-grams or roles in serving artist’s needs, the discussionwas short—finding that some of what NOVA did wasalready attended to in SPACES programming withlittle else that was cost effective. It was a watershedmoment for SPACES. Once very much in the shadow ofNOVA, it had grown stronger and increasingly visiblethrough the years.

Since SPACES bought its current building in 1990,the physical structure played a defining role for theorganization. The late 19th century, three-story brickstructure has expansive views of Cleveland’s industrialheart from its hillside location just west of the Cuya-hoga River. The location was attractive to SPACES whenit bought the building—central to the city’s heritage,attractive to new development, and with extraordinary

SPACES presents 25-35 free events each year,including exhibition openings, artist and curatorlectures, gallery talks, symposia, and hands-onworkshops with underserved youth. As a nationally renown artist-run alternative

exhibition space, SPACES has always filled an

important vacuum in the Cleveland art scene.

views of both central city and industrial core. Thesesame qualities interested others and brought bothwelcome and unwelcome challenges to SPACES duringits third decade.

In 1998, SPACES held a national artists’ competitionto create a sign for its building to increase visibilitywithin the area. In the winning commission, artist XanPalay (Columbus, Ohio) imagined a village of whimsicallittle buildings, each aglow with a neon letter to spell“SPACES”. Xan reasoned:“When thinking about the site,I was fantasizing about life behind the windows of thebuilding. . . . [W]ho can look at it without wonderinghow nice it would be to wake up to see the sun comingup over the lake and the city? . . . My proposal is aboutthe little fantasies we create around the spaces weobserve.”Delightful, as well as successful, the sign isartistic placemaking at its best.

Despite the triumph of the new rooftop sculpture,the building has not been problem-free. The secondand third floors house tenants whose rent funded themortgage, but also caused stress whenever large areaswere vacant for extended periods of time. In addition,budgeting for improvements and repairs to the build-ing has always been a challenge.

A celebration in the neighborhood on March 17, 2000,marked the groundbreaking for Stonebridge, a develop-ment project intended to bring high-end contemporaryhousing into one of Cleveland’s oldest neighborhoods.SPACES reacted nervously, but without surprise, sincethe project had been renting space on its upper floors.Stonebridge has become the largest housing develop-ment in the core of Cleveland since the public housingprojects of the 1930s. However, with good fortune, aconcurrent project by the Cuyahoga County EngineersOffice at theWest 25th Street end of the Viaduct addedsignificantly to parking available in the area.

Except for the modest amount that it receives fromrent, SPACES, like many arts organizations without anendowment or major earned income, scrambles to raiseits annual budget each year. This effort is not quitefrom scratch, as loyal individual supporters and publicfunders provide fairly consistent support.Membershipcontributions, an annual fund campaign, and benefitproceeds provide core support. SPACES receives operat-ing support from the Ohio Arts Council and the recentlyformed Cuyahoga Arts and Culture; operating funds(sometimes specified for a particular organizationalemphasis) fromThe Cleveland Foundation and TheGeorge Gund Foundation; project support from smallerfoundations and nation-wide funders such as theNational Endowment for the Arts, and more recentmajor funders including The AndyWarhol Foundationfor the Visual Arts and the Nimoy Foundation. However,priorities from funders change, and the capability of

Every year, the SPACES’ AnnualBenefit and Auction draws morethan 600 adventurous guests—some in crazily creativeget-ups—as well as fantasticdecorations, artwork and mer-chandise from more than 100artists and business donors,delectable food from the hottestrestaurants in Cleveland, andmusic and dancing late into thenight. Cleveland’s Plain Dealerhas called the SPACES’ benefit“...the party of the year in thelocal art scene.”

Over one hundred SPACES’ members ex-hibit and sell their own work in the galleryduring ArtMart: SPACES Annual Members’Show & Sale. Paintings, photography,prints, ceramics, sculpture, and jewelryare on view for one week. A portion of theproceeds made on the sale of the work isallocated to sustain SPACES’ mission, itsexhibiting artists, and programs.

mid-sized organizations to adapt is crucial. These chal-lenges are constant and potentially unnerving.

In November 1999,The Cleveland Foundation, in abroad-ranging effort to create stability in the budgetsof regional arts organizations, initiated its five-yearBASICs (Building the Arts Strength in Cleveland) pro-gram and invited 17 mid-sized arts organizations to par-ticipate. Each of the organizations received significantfunds fromThe Cleveland Foundation that were crucialto their operations. The program grew out of a study ofCleveland’s performing arts organizations resulting inrecommendations that they be given operating (ratherthan project) support; that they be held to “best-knownpractices of operations”; and—most importantly—that it was crucial to establish on-going support forthe arts from public funds. The Cleveland Foundationsupplemented BASICs with workshops, consultants,evaluations, and a context for peer support. Ultimately,the recommendation for public funding resulted in asignificant parallel initiative by The Cleveland Founda-tion and civic leaders which resulted in substantial taxsupport for Cleveland’s cultural institutions (includingSPACES), starting in 2008.

Through BASICs, SPACES received important technol-ogy upgrades, participated in professional seminars,improved its internal systems, and became betteracquainted with other area arts organizations. And itwas in these years that membership building wassupported by a series of initiatives that resulted inmembership more than doubling between 2000 andearly 2002.

SPACES provides one of the most flexible

and versatile galleries around. There is

always a sense of discovery when you go

because of the nature of the changing

exhibitions.

SPACES is a lasting leader in the sense of

the classic cooperative galleries that over

the years have fallen away because they

failed to stay current and responsive to a

large audience. SPACES has maintained

that edge.

On February 18, 1999, SPACES registered its domainname, spacesgallery.org, an initial step that continuesto expand the ways in which the organization speaks tothe world and maintains public records of its programs.

Concurrently, The AndyWarhol Foundation for theVisual Arts invited SPACES and 23 other visual arts or-ganizations nation-wide to apply for a major capacity-building grant through its newWarhol Initiative. Theprogram awarded grants of $100,000 to stabilize mid-sized arts organizations,with the caveat that they usethe funds to better serve artists. SPACES proposed topay down most of the remaining mortgage loans sothat it could set aside funds to plan and establish along-desired artist residency program. As a result, TheFoundation decided to pay off the entire mortgage andawarded SPACES a grant of $126,500 in 2000. Onlyseven other organizations received Initiative grants inthe first year of the program.

The Ohio Arts Council (OAC) enthusiastically agreedto support two international residencies during thefirst year of the SPACESWorld Artists Program (SWAP),and with that knowledge TheWarhol Foundation fol-lowed with a two-year program grant of $60,000.TheOAC has remained a major funder of SWAP’s interna-tional residencies. Since 2002, SPACES has sponsored atleast three six-week residencies a year, providing inter-national and national artists the time and opportunityto create new work and interact with the NortheastOhio community. Supporting these residencies withhonoraria, housing, studio space, and dedicated staffsupport, SPACES continues to welcome artists fromaround the world, including Israel, Czech Republic,Chicago, Poland, Hungary, New York, and Chile. SPACESelected to commit attention and resources to SWAPbecause of its desire to both assist artists of the regionin speaking to the world and to assist the artists of theworld to have a voice here.

SPACES World Artists Program (SWAP)gives visiting artists from around theworld an opportunity to create newwork and interact with NortheastOhioans. Each year, SWAP consists offour, eight-week residencies by nationaland international artists who create anew body of work that is exhibited atthe conclusion of the residency. SWAPartists interact with the community in avariety of ways: they meet with studentsand Cleveland-area ethnic associations,present talks about their work and theartistic and political climate in theircountry, and they open the studio toshare their work-in-progress to thepublic.

My residency through the SPACES World Artists Program allowed me to really connect and

collaborate with a community of people, rather than just setting up camp in a transplanted

studio space. The body of work that came out of this process may resonate with audiences

in many other cities and countries around the world, but it is also linked directly with the

people and ideas of Cleveland.

Since its inception, the programming committee(comprised mostly of the artists on the Board ofTrustees) has selected a significant proportion of theartists who exhibit at SPACES from an annual open callfor submission. In the new building, the 5,500 squarefoot gallery space almost doubled the size of the for-mer gallery onWest 6th Street, allowing more artiststo show a significant body of work. But it also posedchallenges to organizing coherent exhibitions from theannual call. By the 1990s, SPACES presented six majorexhibitions each year, and, at least conceptually, theexhibitions were divided into two groups: three organ-ized from the annual call and three by independentcurators. Due in part to the additional exhibition needsof SPACESWorld Artist Program (SWAP) artists, themajor exhibitions were scaled from six to five in the2003-04 season.

As it has evolved, the annual review of materials bythe programming committee acts as an open sourcefrom which artists are selected and concepts are gener-ated. The objective is not just to select the “program-ming” shows but to review of the ideas that arebuzzing about the art world, particularly among theyounger artists who are a significant proportion of thepool. These exhibitions can start with such ideas or canstart by identifying artists with the most interestingwork, and members of the committee and SPACES staffdraw upon their own resources and networks to bal-ance and expand concepts. The artists reviewed by thecommittee also find their way into the curated shows—if that’s where they make a better fit.

Within the framework of curated exhibitions, under-lying organizational values have generated what mightbe thought of as “series” of exhibitions. Earlier exhibi-tions that emphasized young artists such as Cleveland X:Artists from a Post Industrial City (1993) and Despite theOdds: Survival for Young Artists in the 90s (1997) havebeen followed in the past decade by Artists for a NewEra (2000),Capturing Cleveland: Pages from a CitySketchbook (2004), and The Big Bang (2007). A concernwith urban issues and the integration of art in theplanning process was the impetus for NeighborhoodDestinations: An Exhibition of New Ideas for Cleveland’sNeighborhoods (1994) and On the Waterfront: Public Artfor RTA’s Waterfront Line (1996), which were followedby House: Case Study Cleveland (2002), Street Repairs(2006), and Shrinking Cities: Research and Interventions(2007). SPACES has always been a place that welcomedand encouraged the meeting of art and politics withearlier exhibitions like Making Art in the Age of AIDS(1994) and Cultural Connections (1995), followed bySilenced Voices: An Affirmation of Human Rights (1999),Between the Borders: New Forms of Identity (2001), andDissent: Political Voices (2005). Complimenting theirtighter concepts, each curated show has been docu-mented by a brochure or catalogue since 1990.

In recent years, a new series of curated showsemerged that surveys trends and directions in thenational art scene: Painting Function:Making it Realcurated by Saul Ostrow (2000),Drawing on Language(2001), and It’s a Wonderful Life: Psychodrama in

Contemporary Painting (2004), curated by Boardmembers Joanne Cohen and Julie Langsam, andBeautiful Dreamer curated by David Gibson (2005).These exhibitions have included public programmingreaching out to students at The Cleveland Institute ofArt and other regional colleges and universities. If itcould be called a series, it is typical of how SPACESmakes decisions—not by dictate of administrativeimperative but by response to artists’ interests.

But the major exhibitions are just the foundationof the many ways that artists participate. In addition,the exhibition year includes 10 SPACELab exhibitions (acontinuing series of experimental short-term projects,which, unlike other programming, is open to students),and three to five exhibitions of new work created inCleveland by SPACESWorld Artist Program participants.In addition, hundreds of artists support SPACESthrough the annual Members’ Show & Sale andthrough the Benefit and Art Auction.

Director Susan R. Channing informed the Trustees in2007 that she was leaving the position after 21 years ofextraordinary service. In parting, Channing recollectedhow she felt welcomed into Cleveland’s art communitysince she joined the staff in 1986:“The city grows onyou. Tough, stubborn, realistic, easygoing—preciselythe virtues of the people that I’ve worked, played,laughed, and cried with over the last 21 years . . . I’llwatch with excitement as SPACES and the city moveinto the next era.”

SPACES interacts directly with artists, promoting excellence andexperimentation to produce challenging gallery exhibitions, publicprograms, residencies, and publications.

SPACES creates opportunities for developing and experimentingartists to present challenging new work to the public, and exposestheir work to audiences in and outside of Ohio.

SPACES provides local, regional, and national artists with servicesand benefits such as gallery space and facilities, honoraria, promo-tion, efforts to secure critical press coverage, and freedom fromcommercial pressure.

SPACES shows significant work which would not otherwise be seenin northeast Ohio. By doing so, we invite dialogue and provide aforum for the vital exchange of artistic ideas in a positive environ-ment for artists and the public.

However, Channing’s special gift will notbe found on any possible list of accomplishments: toleave Cleveland with an organization that embodiesher personal qualities—the curiosity and social con-science to seek adventurous initiatives; the patience towork to build consensus when pressing forward wouldbe easier; and the great heart to believe.

SPACES’ Board of Trustees assembled a search com-mittee, led by Board President John C.Williams, toconduct a national search for a new director. After anextensive nine-month search with over 80 applicants,in September of 2007, SPACES hired a leading local artsadministrator. Unfortunately, the new director, after abrief, three-month tenure,was courted away by a muchlarger non-profit organization to lead their capital cam-paign for a facility expansion. This recent, abrupt depar-ture left SPACES without an executive director for their30th Anniversary, along with the expensive and time-consuming task of revisiting their search. Taking a deepbreath, JohnWilliams reaffirmed the Board and staff’sstrong commitment to continue to support SPACES’mission during this extended transition.

As SPACES celebrates this milestone 30th Anniver-sary, it gives time to reflect on its changes and accom-plishments. The last 10 years have brought significantincreases in SPACES’ national visibility, international ac-claim through the success of the SPACESWorld ArtistsProgram, and the continued integration of alternativeart into the region’s cultural vocabulary. As one of thefew original, remaining national alternative arts organi-zations founded in the 70s, SPACES continues to thrive.This 30th anniversary gives SPACES the ideal opportu-nity to evaluate its history and build upon its successes.With strong leadership and a dedicated staff, SPACESshould look forward to many more years of advancingthe artist’s vision.

Living in Your Imagination is a celebration of SPACES’ 30th Anniversary, presenting

11 artists who exhibited at SPACES in each year from 1998-2008.

Living in Your Imagination explores how artists create within the sense of imag-

ination—of effective memory (a usable past) that activates within the psychic

and physical geographies that we all inhabit. And what are these geographies?

Even the artist finds them difficult to frame as they are ever-shifting and insepa-

rable, constructed of fluid proportions of intellect, aspiration, space, and resources.

The ingredient of “space” could be a shopping mall or an aesthetic system;

“resources” could be a video camera or inspiration from an affair of the heart.

So these geographies—these spaces—are created both of tangible substance

and in the imagination.

But is this geography real? The poet H.D. Rowe cautioned against seeking truth

by peeling away the superficial, then the apparent, then the underlying. There

The new animations of Karen Yasinsky remind us that the moment of figure drawing isnot a still moment, but an act that takes place over time. And they convey that when peo-ple engage with each other, even the still moments can be enormously active and chargedwith energy.The works tingle and scratch, pregnant with possibility, easily suspending ourdisbelief. So, the old questions perk—are we perceiving fact, or fiction, or something else?

In writing about her work,Colette Gaiter tells us that she is not a photographer, butthat she photographs to document what she sees. One of her on-going concerns is,literally, the writing on the wall. To her, the wall is as important as the writing, andthe social context within which the writing occurs modifies each syllable. In thisportfolio from a 2007 trip to Cuba, revolutionary slogans may be spontaneous, butthey remain on the wall with approval by civic authorities.

Placid, with burning undertones, the East of Eden series by PipoNguyen-duy hauntswith a promise of paradise that cannot be fulfilled.The artist was a political refugee from war-torn Vietnam in his earlyteens, and his emotional response to his childhood is central to hiswork. This series, in addition,was activated by the attack on theWorldTrade Center and, in part, inspired by paintings of the Hudson RiverSchool of the 19th century.

was a limit to this, as with an onion,where, achieving your objective, you reach

a void. This does not mean that there are not layers to everything and everyone,

or that the investigation of the layers is not useful—but that the seeker does

not peel them away as much as pass through, understanding that description of

layers, as well as perception of layers, as well as the memory of layers, are all parts

of a geography. And in this geography, truth is not encountered on a plane, but

within three-dimensional space.

Artists are intrepid explorers that reflect, seek, and foretell as they wrestle with

varieties of truth,whether inconvenient, essential, or absolute. Their explorations

take place over time—an added dimension.Memory of the past and expectations

for the future mingle in the bubbling cauldron of experience. In a way, everyone

does this, but artists share their experience, laboring to create a map which may

guide others. They are our heroes, champions of the human condition.

Living in Your ImaginationSPACES 30th Anniversary Exhibition

The work of Patrick Robideau penetrates an intangible groundbetween history and recollection, the location of an uncertain caul-dron within which collective memory is brewed from a variety ofingredients, including who we wish we might have been, who wethink we are, and who we hope to be. All-embracing, from sorrowto celebration, this reflective identity informs personal and publicdecisions.

Sometimes there is an elephant in the room, a past ex-perience that overwhelms our ability to see or thinkclearly. Or, sometimes there is an elephant that we nerv-ously treasure, as in historic times in India when pos-sessing a white elephant came with prestige, as well asburdened withmaintenance.Billie Grace Lynn describesher huge, inflated elephants as“an apt metaphor for ourcontemporary condition; too expensive to sustain, tooprecious to surrender, and in a state of rapid change.”

SPACES has a level of professionalism that is usually

reserved for museums. Across the country people

have heard of it, so it is a very respected venue for

emerging and established artists. It is one of the few

places in the country that had the courage to show

political work before it was fashionable to do so. The

people involved with SPACES are a rarified group;

they seem to enjoy crossing terrain and borders that

others stay clear of. SPACES is one of the freest

places in the heart of America.

Billie Grace LynnArtistAssistant Professor, SculptureUniversity of MiamiCoral Gables, Florida

Kevin Everson’s films portray life in the working class culture of BlackAmericans—in his words, “the daily materials, conditions, tasks, andgestures,”withmuch of his narrative influenced by his experienceswhilegrowing up in Northeast Ohio. He underlies his narratives with the for-mal stuff of art history to create a curious texture in which ordinary ex-pression and act assume the power of myth. Casual gesture appearsportentous, and idle chatter is heard as eloquent.

Maps have a seductive quality, teasing us by being reli-able guides in getting from place to place. But there’salso deceit—defining an areawith a color does notmeanthat the area is a unified state. Todd DeVriese under-stands the capacity of map shapes to act as nationalsymbols, and in his recent work he collages these mapswith the conceptual signs of extra-territorial entitiessuch as NATO and the UN. Living in Your ImaginationSPACES 30th Anniversary Exhibition

Responding to historic socialist culture in the Czech Republic, the work of SPACES World Artist Jirí Cernickyconsiders the function of the artist as both provocateur and impartial observer in a time of social change. Inrecent work, he has entered collective space (a train station) to record private thoughts; at SPACES he wears asuit made of corporate logos positioning himself in Cleveland as a model for global consumer culture.

As the urban environment of Cleveland’s heroic industrial age col-lapses, there is a sadness, but also an extraordinary opportunityto see into things—perhaps, like archaeologists, imaginingmon-uments aswe hold fragments in our hands. Jake Beckman’s workcautiously imagines the materiality of infrastructure, aestheti-cally examines our callous interventions upon the natural world,and listens for the winds to shift.
