Series at a Glance for Elevate

About this Series:

From the tiniest animals on earth to stars spinning light-years away, this world is incredible. God made a universe to be explored, one where every detail points us back to him. In this series we’ll

discover who God is, whether we look in the depths of the sea or the farthest reaches of the universe. The best part is, God made all of this for a purpose, one he doesn’t want you to miss.

Memory Verse:

Psalm 19:1- “The heavens tell about the glory of God. The skies show that his hands created them.”

Experimental Series at a Glance for Elevate (continued)

Lesson 1: The Creator

If you designed a world, what would it look like? It would probably have a lot of your favorite things

in it. Looking at the world you made would tell someone a lot about you. God designed this whole

world exactly the way he wanted it, and because of that, it can tell us a ton about who he is. All the

things we learn through science can help us get to know God better. In fact, that’s why this world

was made!

Lesson 2: The Lab

God made this world for a reason. Wherever we look, we learn more about him! The things he made

are incredible, and so is the way he made them. This week, we’ll look at some huge parts of our

universe, and through them, discover some awesome things about God.

Lesson 3: The Scientists

From the beginning, God wanted to share his creation. He gave us an incredible responsibility, to

take care of and explore this incredible world. This week, we’ll look at our roles in God’s story, and

learn how each one of us is known and designed by God.

Lesson 4: The Reaction

Just when everything in God’s world was going great, something terrible happened. People began to

disobey God, and stopped living the way he made them to live. They did things God said were

wrong, things we call sin. This looked like the end of God’s purpose for our world, but he had an

amazing plan, a plan to show everyone how great his love for us is.

Lesson 5: The Solution

What happened in God’s world was a disaster, but God’s purpose for us didn’t end when we

disobeyed him. He still has a plan to make us like new again, and would give anything to make that

plan happen. When you see how much God loves you, everything changes.

Lesson 6: The Purpose

God made this world so we could know who he is. He gave it to us to care for, and wants every one

of us to be all He made us to be. Every time we serve, defend, and love others, we’re showing them

the same thing that changed our lives: God’s love.

Opening Song 2:00 Welcome to Elevate! Come up to the front, throw your popcorn away, and find a place to sit. Let’s get started!

Welcome and Opening Activity 10:00 Welcome everyone! My name is __________. This is going to be an awesome time, we’ve got a ton to do. We get to play games, sing, hear stories, and have a lot of fun today. In fact, I want to get the fun started right away, with a game! I need two people to help me out with this game, and you can’t mind getting a little messy. Also, if you have a dairy or milk allergy, this game is not for you, I’m sorry.

Do This: Quickly choose two kids to volunteer. You may want to pick kids who are older and less likely to intentionally make a mess. Place two plates with several marshmallows on them on the table.

Each of these plates has marshmallows on it. Your job is to find the marshmallows, but we’re going to make it a little more difficult.

Do This: Spray whipped cream over both plates until all the marshmallows are completely covered. Do This: Give both kids a trash bag with a hole cut in the bottom, and have them wear it as a poncho.

Now, you must find these marshmallows, but to do so, you can only use your face! Use your mouth to move the mallows from this plate onto the clean plate. Whoever finds the most marshmallows in one minute, and moves them from one plate to the other, is the winner! Ready? Set? Go!

Worship 5:00

Fantastic job! Who got the most marshmallows?

Do This: Quickly count the marshmallows on each plate, or have leaders ready to count them. Don’t spend more than a few seconds here, if you feel like it’s taking too long, have the kids themselves count. Do This: Give kids towels to clean their faces, and have volunteers ready to take them to the bathrooms, take off the trash bags, and help them get clean. Even if they are still on stage for a few moments, keep the script moving, and help them more during the Question of the Day.

That was great! While they get cleaned up, we’ve got a question to answer. It’s our question of the day!

Question of the Day 3:00

Would you rather be able to swim like a fish, or fly like a bird? Turn to someone next to you and find out their answer. Then, tell them your answer, too!

Do This: Emcee as the kids are sharing their answers. Encourage them to share with the people around them, and encourage any kid whose story you hear. Know This: Allow kids time to interact with one another. Feel free to ask a few of them what their answer is.

It’s amazing how different our world is, depending on where you go. Both the ocean and sky are incredible, and would be cool to explore. No matter where we go in this world, we can find something that helps us learn about God.

Lesson Intro 2:00

God thought of everything that exists in the sky and in the sea. He made it all for a reason. Everything that exists shows how incredible God is. We can do that too, by worshipping God. “Worship” means showing God that we love him. We can do that by doing good things for others, telling people about God, and by singing about him. Let’s do that now!

Another great way to worship God is by praying. No matter where you are, or what time it is, God will listen to you, because he loves you. Let’s talk to him now! We’ll close our eyes to help us stay focused on God while we pray. God, you are so great, so creative. Help us to see your love for us today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

“Experimenting” means testing something to see how it works. If you are building a robot, you might experiment with different batteries to see which one works best. If you are hiking, you might experiment by trying different trails to see which one is faster. This series is all about experimenting with our world. We’ve been learning about God by looking at magnets, cells, and even other planets. We’ve learned that God has a purpose for everything he has made, including you. Today, I want to finally get the answer to the super important question. Why did God make us? He has a plan for my life and He loves me, but what do I do about that?

I think there’s someone who can help us answer that question, Calvin the scientist.

Jesus showed us how much God loves us, in the most amazing way possible. In a couple minutes, we’ll find out how Jesus’ story can change our lives, but first, it’s time to get up and moving a bit with our memory verse!

Memory Verse 5:00

Do This: Read the verse from the screen. This is a verse from the book of Psalms. It’s actually the beginning of a song about God. We don’t know what the song sounded like at first, but we can have some fun making up our own! Let’s sing the verse together, pick any tune you want! Do This: Sing the verse with the kids. Next, let’s try rapping it. Ready? Do This: Rap the verse with the kids. One more time, let’s sing it like we’re country singers. Do This: Sing the verse with the kids. Alright, you can sit down, but just for a minute, because the next thing we get to do is our group activity!

Group Activity 10:00

Know This: Since this is summer, our schedule looks different than usual. If you are able to do group time, you are encouraged to do it, as the closeness of a smaller group is a great thing for kids to experience. If you aren’t able to do this section in group time, keep following this script, and direct the activity from the stage. Do This: If you are doing this activity in small groups, direct the kids to their group leaders now.

This activity is called “What’s it Worth?” It’s a game for three people. I’m going to show you something, and your job is to guess how much it would cost to buy that thing. Once you have a guess, write it on your whiteboard. Audience, you can call out what you think they should guess, to help them out! Ready? Let’s give it a try.

Here’s our first object. How much do you think it costs to buy an inflatable bear chair?

Do This: Read the contestants’ answers from their whiteboards. Let’s find out who got the closest! You can buy this chair for…

Twenty-nine dollars and ninety cents! Good guessing, but ________ was closest. You get a point for this round. Let’s try again! How much do you think it costs to buy a wig for your dog?

Do This: Read the contestants’ answers from their whiteboards. Let’s find out who got the closest! You can buy this dog wig for…

Not too bad. Who was the closest? You get a point this round! Next up, this is a strange one. How much would you have to pay to buy a big ball of nothing?

Do This: Read the contestants’ answers from their whiteboards. Let’s find out who got the closest! You can buy absolutely nothing for…

Well, that’s really something. _________, you were closest, so you get a point! Let’s try another one. How much would you have to pay to buy a pen that writes in chocolate?

Do This: Read the contestants’ answers from their whiteboards. Let’s find out who got the closest! You can buy this tasty pen for…

Fifty dollars? Wow. Who got the closest this round? You got a point! Let’s try one more time, how much would it cost to buy a giant inflatable rubber duck?

June 16/17 11

One-hundred and ninety eight dollars, and ninety five cents! Wow. This is the last one, who got the closest? You get a point, which means ___________ is the winner! Great job everyone. You can sit back down.

It might be a little strange to buy those things, but that game did remind me of Calvin’s story from earlier. We say things are worth a certain amount of money. If you want to buy something, you have to pay that much money to get it. Some things, like cars or diamonds, are worth a lot. Some things, like paper or a wig for your dog, aren’t worth much. Why is this important? Well, God says something about what you are worth to him. Check out this verse.

Peter is writing about the story we heard earlier. Jesus was hurt, he bled, and he died, all to pay the price for our sin. Did you catch how much you are worth to God? Peter used the word “priceless.” Jesus, God’s son, gave his life for you, because to him, you are worth more than all the money in the world. You are priceless to God.

Application 5:00 I have an example for you, but I’ve got to get my scientist gear on first. Do This: Put on a lab coat and goggles. There’s a verse in the Bible I really want you to hear. It’s written by a guy named John, who was one of Jesus’ closest friends.

Do This: Read the verse from the screen.

Jesus came to show us something. When God made this world, everything was good. God put us in this world with a purpose. He wanted us to live for him, to take care of this world, and to learn all we could about it. This oil represents us.

Do This: Place the drinking glass on the table. Pour several inches of vegetable oil into it.

Game Title Slide: “What’s it worth?” and clear audio

1 Peter 1:19- “You were bought by the priceless blood of Christ.”

1 John 4:9- “How did God show his love for us? He sent his one and only Son into the world. He sent him so we could receive life through him.

Page 12: Experimental Lesson 5 June 16/17… · Experimental Lesson 5 June 16/17 2 Experimental Series at a Glance for Elevate About this Series: From the tiniest animals on earth to stars

Experimental Lesson 5

June 16/17 12

Know This: Have three cups set out: one with ½ cup of oil (the one you just poured), one with ½ cup of corn syrup, and one with ½ cup of water with red food coloring in it. Set these up ahead of time, so you can smoothly pour each cup into the glass when necessary.

When we sinned, something happened, to us and to this world. We deserved to be punished, and that wasn’t something that was easy to take care of. In fact, there was nothing we could do about it on our own. That’s what this syrup represents, the things we’ve done that we know are wrong. Do This: Take the corn syrup, and pour it into the oil. It will settle at the bottom of the glass. It looks like there’s no way to get this syrup out, without taking the oil out, too. It’s impossible for us to get rid of our sin on our own. Think about it. If you break your friend’s toy, can you just forgive yourself for doing that? No, your friend has to forgive you, you can’t just fix the problem by yourself. We’ve disobeyed God by sinning, and we can’t make up for that on our own. Now, what would make the most sense to us, is just to start over. I can get rid of this oil and the syrup and start again. God could have created a new world and started over, but he didn’t. Instead, He decided to show that He loves us more than we ever imagined. He sent Jesus. Jesus lived, and died, and then came back to life. When we follow Jesus, something amazing can happen in our lives. Do This: Pour the red water into the glass. It will separate the oil from the syrup. When we decide to follow Jesus, we are separated from sin. All the wrong things we’ve done, all the punishment we deserve, Jesus took that all. Because of Him, we have a chance to live the way God made us to, without doing things we know are wrong. That doesn’t mean we’ll never do wrong things again, instead, it means that no matter what, Jesus will forgive us, and help us start doing what’s right again. Jesus took our punishment because God made us to live for him.

Do This: Remove the lab coat and goggles as you talk. Set them aside. God thinks you are priceless. You are His creation, who He loves. Jesus gave his life so you could live for God, the way you were made to live. All you need to do is make the choice to follow him with your life.

Big Idea Slide: God made me to live for him.

Experimental Lesson 5

June 16/17 13

If you’ve already made that choice, that is amazing. You never have to make it again, Jesus is always with you, and cares about you no matter what. Since you know God, you can tell others about him, too! If you aren’t sure about all this, that’s ok. If you have questions, or aren’t sure you want to make Jesus the leader of your life, any one of the adults in here would love to listen to you, help answer your questions, and tell you more about God. This is the most important decision you’ll ever make, and no one else can make it for you. For some of you, though, today is your day. If you want to make Jesus the leader of your life, you can do that right now. I’m going to pray in a moment, and if you want to choose to follow God, you can talk to him with me, right here. God will always listen to you, because he loves you. You should know, though, that just saying this prayer isn’t what’s most important. What’s most important is that you mean what you say. We’re going to tell God we’re sorry for sinning, thank him for sending Jesus, and say that we believe Jesus died and came back to life. Finally, you’ll ask God to be the leader of your life. If you’d like to make that decision, I’d love to pray with you right now. You can repeat after me, either out loud or by thinking the words. God hears prayers that you think, too. All of us will bow our heads and close our eyes, to help us focus on talking to God. God, I know that I have sinned. I’ve made bad choices, and I am sorry. I believe that Jesus is your son. I believe that he died on the cross, took my punishment, and came back to life, so that I can be forgiven. Jesus, I ask you now to be my leader, Savior, and friend forever. I choose to follow you. Amen.

Congratulations!

Wrap-Up 2:00

Worship 8:00

If you just made that choice for the first time, congratulations! That is such an amazing decision! I am so excited for you. I’m going to have everyone stand up.

Know This: Have everyone stand up before you dismiss the ones who decided to follow Jesus. This helps those kids feel more comfortable going where you direct them.

If you’ve decided to follow Jesus today, we have something to give you, a book, that can help you know what to do next, now that you’ve made this awesome choice! You can go with ___________, get the book, and ask any questions you have about life with Jesus.

The rest of us get to celebrate this awesome day and worship God! Let’s stand up and get ready to sing. This first song is slower, and called God a father. God is like the best father we can ever have. He loves us, and tells us we are priceless to him. While we sing, think about the words to this song, and about how great God is to us.

God’s love is so incredible, and the greatest way we see that love is through his son, Jesus. This song is about how God made a way for us to know him and be his friend. That way is through what Jesus did. Let’s sing “God Made a Way” together!

That was great, I love worshipping with all of you! You can sit down.
