Controlmad advanced design center is a FabLab (Fabrication Laboratory) for advanced architecture, en-gineering and design. We are an Authorized Rhino Training Center and Authorized Rhino FabStudio, with university teaching experience.

Grasshopper is a graphical algorithm editor tightly integrated with Rhino’s 3-D modeling tools. Unlike RhinoScript, Grasshopper requires no knowledge of programming or scripting, but still allows designers to build form generators from the simple to the awe-inspiring.

Grasshopper is included in Rhino 7 for Mac and Windows.

Parametric design works combing geometry and parameters. These variables can be modified to alter and update the final design at any moment, without remaking the 3d model. A parameter can be any data information: the section of a column, the distance to a specific point, the amount of sunlight at certain hour...etc

Another important feature in parametric or computational design is that you can automate or program processes and tasks for your designs. That means it is possible to generate complex shapes with specific data and get endless families of design with diverse results. During the course, with the help of short and basic exercises, we will learn how to reach and apply results to complex surfaces and textures

The course is amed to professionals or students in engineering, architecture, design (industrial, product, jewelry, furniture...) and backgrounds related

In this introductory course, students will learn the basic workflows in Grasshopper: data lists, domains, tree structures...The goal is to understand the logic process so students can develop their own basics scriptings or take another ones as references.

We recommend a minimum level of Rhino3d (layers, simple geometry creation...). No previous knowled-ge of Grasshopper is required.

Some days before the course starts, you will access to the course platform. There you can download documentation, iles, go to the Zoom sessions and comment or ask questions using the panel discussions

Once you have attended 80% of the course hours, you will get a certificate of completion.

_ INTRO and INTERFACE. What is Parametric Design?CAD vs. Parametric vs. BIM vs. SCRIPT. Grasshopper canvas, Parameters, Components, Connections...

_ RHINO -> GH -> RHINO

_ BASIC OPERATIONSPoints, lines, transforms, extrusions...

_BASIC DATA LISTDefault management and manipulation of data list Playing wih simple geometry, we will create a parametric furniture where different solutions are obtained applying generative design with random values.

_SURFACE PANELIZATIONUV surface domainsFree plugin “Lunchbox”, one of the most popular and versatile apps for Grasshopper.

_ATTRACTORSVariable geometry using points and curves

_RESPONSIVECELLS We will get a triangularization that changes according to the position of input geometry. Besides, we can apply parametric conditions like variable diameter and height of columns so it look like a roof that reacts to certain manipulations.

_BASIC MATHSWith a parabola equation, we can create a simple truss structure adapted to different solutions.
