Scottish Castles• You’ll find over 300 castles in Aberdeen City

and Shire, and it’s easy to see how many of these could have helped inspire the fictional DunBroch Castle seen in Brave.

• Admire the fairytale Craigievar Castle, near Alford, a pretty pinkish building topped with tiny turrets, said to be the inspiration for Walt Disney’s famous castle.

Ancient Scotland• Aberdeen City and Shire boasts a fascinating

past, with visible marks left by its ancient inhabitants to explore. The 9 ft tall Lang Stane rests in the middle of Aberdeen city centre and you can observe the remains of an ancient hill fort on the summit of the Mither Tap on Bennachie. Or why not visit the Muir of Dinnet NNR and the ornate ninth century Kinord Stone?

• If you’re inspired by the film and want to see a real life stone circle, head to Easter Aquhorthies Stone Circle, which lies 1 mile west of Inverurie. These mysterious 4,000 year old stones are thought to be one of the earliest circles in Aberdeenshire.

Wildlife & Nature • Talk a wander through Glen Tanar Estate,

which is famed for its magnificent Caledonian Pinewoods. There is an easy waymarked circuit, which makes exploring easy. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as red squirrels and capercaillies.

• Watch and listen for some fantastic wildlife. Look out for golden eagles and ptarmigans on higher ground around Loch Muick on the Balmoral Estate, and listen out for the distinctive roar of red deer during rutting season in the autumn. It’s a truly unforgettable sound.

• See guillemots, puffins, peregrine falcons, seals and dolphins along the coast. Where better to spot a bottlenose dolphin than from the clifftop fortress of Dunnottar Castle near Stonehaven?

The maps are helpful if you don’t know where a particular location is in relation to the area that interests you. The majority of entries will have a postcode which can be used to pin point exact location. Where businesses are listed as being ‘By’ a town or village it is wise to check the exact location with the operator before making your journey. Some listings have a distance beside the location; this indicates the approximate road distance in miles from the main location. These mileages are voluntarily provided by the businesses themselves.

In respect of assistance dogs the law quite clearly states that to refuse admission to a registered assistance dog is now unlawful and constitutes discrimination under the Equality Act 2012 under three possible categories: 1: discrimination arising from a disability; 2: indirect discrimination and3: disability harassment. VisitScotland is

committed to equality of opportunity and is working through its Accessible Tourism Project to educate and inform all our customers about the requirements under the law. We have encouraged all our business customers to use the assistance dog symbol in order to comply with law, or make it clear in a statement that they welcome all assistance dogs.
