One ofthe first landscapes to be designated in 1958, theSurrey Hills boasts a diverse and rich landscapejust waiting to be discovered.

This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty stretchesacross the chalk North Downs that run from Farnhamin the west, above Guildford, Dorking and Reigate, to

Oxted in the east. To thesouth are the Greensand Hillsthat include Black Down, theDevil’s Punch Bowl and LeithHill. In between are theriver valleys of the Wey,Tillingbourne and Mole.

FarnhamFarnham is a vibrant and lively old English markettown with narrow streets lined with some of thefinest Georgian architecture in the south ofEngland. It is a happy blend of old and new with aparish church and castle dating back to the 12thCentury. The North Downs Way National Trailstarts here and there are numerous other walkingand cycling opportunities.

Things to doDiscover fascinating specialist shops as well as familiarHigh Street names, lively cafes, restaurants and pubswith character and history. Galleries and craft shops area special attraction, as well as a monthly farmers market.

HaslemereOnce described as the ‘fashionable capital of thebeautiful Surrey Highlands’, Haslemere is anattractive market town perched where three countiesmeet. It is a gateway to some magnificent SurreyHills countryside which has helped to inspire manygreat artists and authors. Add this to the quirkycafés, country pubs and specialist shops and you’vegot something of the flavour of the place.

Things to doHaslemere’s town crest bears the motto ‘Life is moresatisfying through the muses and arts’ and to celebratethis and its historic associations the town holds abiennial Charter Fair and the Haslemere Festival ofArts and Music.

The Haslemere Educational Museum provides afascinating insight into the area. You’ll discover atreasure trove of geology, archaeology and naturalhistory exhibits, including an Egyptian Mummy withan unravelled toe!

For those who enjoy fresh air and beautiful scenery,the countryside surrounding Haslemere is a paradisefor walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Many circularwalks start in Haslemere, as does the Greensand Way,which passes through a varied landscape of heathlandand woodland, to Hamstreet near Ashford in Kent.

HaslemereOnce described as the ‘fashionable capital of thebeautiful Surrey Highlands’, Haslemere is anattractive market town perched where three countiesmeet.
