ExploreThe Surrey Hills Area ofOutstanding Natural BeautyThe Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding NaturalBeauty (AONB) is one of 36 nationally protectedlandscapes in England, having equal landscapestatus and protection to a National Park. One ofthe first landscapes to be designated in 1958, theSurrey Hills boasts a diverse and rich landscapejust waiting to be discovered.

This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty stretchesacross the chalk North Downs that run from Farnhamin the west, above Guildford, Dorking and Reigate, to

Oxted in the east. To thesouth are the Greensand Hillsthat include Black Down, theDevil’s Punch Bowl and LeithHill. In between are theriver valleys of the Wey,Tillingbourne and Mole.

FarnhamFarnham is a vibrant and lively old English markettown with narrow streets lined with some of thefinest Georgian architecture in the south ofEngland. It is a happy blend of old and new with aparish church and castle dating back to the 12thCentury. The North Downs Way National Trailstarts here and there are numerous other walkingand cycling opportunities.

Things to doDiscover fascinating specialist shops as well as familiarHigh Street names, lively cafes, restaurants and pubswith character and history. Galleries and craft shops area special attraction, as well as a monthly farmers market.

Meet Farnham’s past ‘face-to-face’ at its museum,which tells the story of the town. Or why not visitFarnham Castle. Built in the 12th century it was aresidence of the Bishops of Winchester and today youcan enjoy guided tours. Contact the TouristInformation Centre for opening times and prices.

If you fancy some exercise why not try a 1 hour guidedtown walk of Farnham, a chance to explore the townfurther with a local guide telling you stories of past andpresent. Contact the Tourist Information Centre for fulldetails. If you fancy a longer walk why not follow part

Surrounding Towns & VillagesHaslemere neighbours Hindhead, which lies 850ftabove sea level and offers views which promptedwriters and painters to dub the area ‘Little Switzerland’.Hindhead sits on top of the Devil’s Punch Bowl, aremarkable natural basin owned by the National Trustwith a true wilderness feel.

Just outside of Haslemere you can discover thepicturesque villages of Grayswood, Brook, Witley andGrayshott, with its famous pottery.
