A WELCOME FROM THE MAYOR OF THE TOWN OF COLLINGWOOD

Welcome to Collingwood’s Spring & Summer Community Activity Guide!

Our residents have told us that recreation is a

very important factor in their decision to make Collingwood their home; they want to live, work, and play here. We celebrate our incredible Southern Georgian Bay environment, nestled at the base of the Niagara Escarpment, with over 70km of trails and a picturesque waterfront. Our residents and tourists embrace and thrive in the beauty and richness of our four active seasons environs.

Join me in welcoming the warmth and optimism of another spring and summer season in Collingwood.

In the pages of this Activity Guide, you will find the incredible diversity of programs available to you in our community. As a four season playground, we have something for everyone and challenge you to embrace the opportunities on offer to you in the warm weather. From the hills of the escarpment to the crystal clear water of Georgian Bay, enjoy hiking, biking, horseback riding, paddling, sailing, and much more. Join the family-fun for our amazing arts and waterfront festivals this year.

Collingwood welcomes you with open arms and invites you to enjoy all we have to offer from the beauty of our natural amenities to the incredible hospitality of our historic downtown shops and restaurants.

If you have any questions about Collingwood, please contact me or staff at Town Hall, or visit us at www.collingwood.ca.

Sleep. It's more important than we think.

Aim for 10 hours of restful sleep for children and 7-9 hours for adults. When we don't get enough sleep it affects our bodies, minds, emotions and behaviours.

Veggies and fruits have vitamins, minerals and fibre that help us grow. Aim for 5 or more servings every day to help build strong bodies and minds.Choose to Boost Veggies and Fruit.

Power Off and Play!

When we are plugged in too much for our down time we aren't making time for all of the other great things around us like; playing, biking, walking, gardening. Take a break. Turn it off. Unplug and Play.

Run. Jump. Play. Every Day.

Every step and movement we take or make throughout our day helps to make our mental and physical health better. Aim for 60 minutes of active play every day. You can do it all at once or add smaller amounts.

Choose water first for thirst. Water contains no sugar, is free and is an environmentally sound choice when we use a refillable bottle. We win and the earth wins! Look for water refill stations, water fountains, the Blue W and taps because when we don't drink enough water we can feel tired, muscle weakness and irritability.

HORTICULTURECollingwood Horticultural Society/Collingwood Garden ClubWe all admire a well-tended garden and love the tree-lined streets of our community. Do you want to find out more about your own garden? Do you want to be part of a group that offers: a great way to meet your neighbours and others in the community interested in gardening; a way to learn more about plants - what to plant, when to plant, where to plant, what plants to avoid and how to care for your yard; and, the chance to make a positive contribution to your community by beautifying your street or the Town’s Arboretum? Then consider the benefits of joining the Collingwood Horticultural Society/Collingwood Garden Club. We are 90+ members eager to share our gardening successes (and failures) while answering your questions about “how does your garden grow?” We meet the 2nd Wednesday of each month with some exceptions. Our membership costs are low - $20 single, $30 family, but our value is high. Come and see for yourself!

COMPETITIVE SWIM CLUB

Junior ClippersThis program is our grassroots introduction to competitive swimming for younger swimmers between the ages of 5 to 10. For swimmers to be able to join the program they must be able to swim a full length of the pool (25 meters) on their own and be comfortable in deep water. In this program, we focus on teaching the four competitive strokes (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke & freestyle) as well as starts and turns. Swimmers in the program have the opportunity to attend development “Devo” swim meets within the Huronia Region as well as certain invitationals if the swimmer has met specific standards. Each swimmer is unique and will progress through the program at their own rate. The main objective of this group is to teach the important fundamentals of competitive swimming while having fun!

SUMMER CAMPS ALC Multi-Sport CampThe purpose of these camps is to build physical literacy through great coaching, an engaging environment, and a variety of stimulus. There is no doubt that athleticism builds self-confidence and prepares children for life’s challenges, as well as, overall positive experience in physical activity. Missing the window for physical literacy will inhibit the ability to optimize skills and lessen the chance of healthy living to adulthood. Sports Specialization at an early age limits kids from exposure to new activities with different learning scenarios acquiring new skills. Using the Collingwood trail system, campers discover all Collingwood has to offer! Activities taught by experts include: mountain biking, soccer, rugby, speed, agility, and strength, yoga, swimming, volleyball, basketball, trail running, hiking, and tennis..
