December 15th - 20thThis is one of my favorite times of year as we prepare our Christmas Celtic Sojourn. Sadly, we won’t be able to join you in person, of course, but we hope you can still join us online, as we bring the spirit of Christmas Celtic to your homes with a special series of concerts. We feel it’s more important than ever to celebrate light this December.

We are busy arranging for that with some of our singers and dancers joining us from various parts of the world including Edinburgh, Sligo, Kerry, Canada and Wisconsin.

We hope you can join us for one of our special broadcasts December 15th-20th. This will be a very special and memorable event this year, and your support helps make it happen.

Here for YouIt has been a year like no other. Throughout this period,

GBH has remained fully operational, mostly working remotely and pivoting to the new demands of this time, being a better resource for you and our community.

In the midst of it all, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. But I constantly remind myself of GBH’s enduring and essential mission and our commitments to our community. They have stood the test of time for nearly 70 years, and they remain an unwavering touch-stone. Our mission is to engage, illuminate and inspire, and to strengthen, include and serve our diverse community, fostering growth and empowering individuals.

It’s a promise of possibility and opportunity, and it couldn’t be more timely in this world we face. With social distancing requiring different ways for us to connect, we’re enlisting new approaches for informing and supporting our community. Our digital library streaming ser-vice Passport, for GBH members, has increased its content offerings to provide more program choices for you. And website traffic has doubled, with many first-time visitors finding our informative and engaging programs.

During this challenging time for the arts, we’re bringing forward works from the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, Handel and Haydn and so many other cultural institutions that have had to cancel live performances. CRB Classical 99.5 continues to present concerts and festivals, as it has throughout the year, and will continue its tradition of all-day holiday streaming (see page 20).

Jared Bowen, GBH’s executive arts editor, profiles local artists on Open Studio each Friday. We’re streaming Jazz 24/7 at gbh.org/music/jazz/jazz-24-7 with Eric Jackson and Tessil Collins. GBH’s Front Row Boston is showcasing new talent (see page 20), and Brian O’Donovan is presenting a special virtual version of A Christmas Celtic Sojourn (see page 17).

We’re all rethinking how we innovate during this unprecedented time, while doubling down on what we know works well to connect with one another and bring meaningful content into our lives when we all need it the most.

Public media can bridge communities and cultures and provide an important platform for voices not often heard. Together with our partners and with all of you, we will continue working to serve you.

Wishing you and your families a safe and healthy holiday season.

1 THE HISTORY OF WHITE PEOPLE IN AMERICA GBH WORLD, in partnership with PBS Independent Lens,

presents The History of White People in America, an animated musical series about America’s reckoning with race and injus-

tice. The shorts take viewers on a journey through American history, starting in the 17th century, to understand how the idea of “white-ness” helped shape the nation’s history, with wide-ranging ramifications on social class and life experiences that exist to this day.

2 MISSISSIPPI JUSTICE A new short film from GBH’s AMERICAN EXPERIENCE,

Mississippi Justice tells the story of the 1964 execution of three civil rights workers—James Chaney, Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman—carried out by the Ku Klux Klan and enabled

by police collusion and state government. Narrated by NPR’s Michel Martin, it features legendary civil rights movement activist Dave Dennis, MacArthur Genius Grant-winning journalist Jerry Mitchell and Harvard Law Professor Randall Kennedy.

3 STORIES FROM THE STAGE PODCAST Powerful stories can bring people together. The new

Stories from the Stage podcast, launching Tue, 12/1, features ordinary people telling extraordinary real stories of love and loss, everyday adventures, shocking revelations and unexpected triumphs that depict what we all have in common. Hear the most memorable stories and, in some cases, find out what happened after storytellers left the stage.

4 UNITED IN SONG: A CELEBRATION OF AMERICA’S RESILIENCE

Wrap up 2020 with an evening of powerful performances that celebrate our country by affirming our commitment to come together through the arts. This 90-minute concert filmed on site at Mount Vernon concludes with a fabulous fireworks finale. Part of the program includes scenes from the Mount Vernon slave cemetery with a moving narrative by Anna Deavere Smith and a special performance by Denyce Graves. Thu (12/31) at 8pm on GBH 2

HIDDEN GEMS

GBH Senior Director of Programming Ron Bachman digs deep into our TV program offerings to highlight noteworthy shows that you might otherwise overlook.

Looking Back and Looking AheadThe holiday season is an appropriate time to reflect on matters of faith and

spirituality. But it’s also a time to reconnect with old friends, even those we know only from our television screens. In that spirit, we offer a chance to reacquaint your-self with stellar work from two gifted actresses with new productions on the horizon in 2021.

Quakers: The Quiet Revolutionaries – Mon (12/21) at 8pm on GBH WORLD – Airing as part of GBH WORLD’s December focus on religion and spiritu-ality, this new documentary reveals how Quakers like Susan B. Anthony and Bayard Rustin (left) have influenced the course of political and social change in America since the 1600s, working in service of the abolition of slavery, women’s suffrage, civil rights, environ-mental justice and world peace.

Rebecca – Mon (12/21, 12/28) at 10pm on GBH 44 – When Dame Diana Rigg died in September at the age of 82 after a more than six-decade career, the acting profession lost a true great. Among her many accolades was an Emmy Award for her performance as Mrs. Danvers in this 1997 adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s Gothic novel. We’re pleased to offer you another chance to see it this month, as a warm-up for one of Rigg’s final roles in the reboot of All Creatures Great and Small, coming to MASTERPIECE in January.

Holy Silence – Fri (12/18) at 9pm on GBH WORLD – Since the Vatican opened its post-1939 secret archives earlier this year, historians have been gaining new insight into how the Catholic Church confronted —or failed to con-front—the Nazi regime and the unfolding horrors of the Holocaust. This thought-provoking film focuses on American officials who worked behind the scenes to influ-ence Vatican poli-cies under two very different popes.

Howards End – Sun (12/27) from 1–5pm on GBH 2 – The main (but not only) reason to watch this 2017 adaptation of E.M. Forster’s novel can be summed up in two words: Hayley Atwell. The actress, who radiates intelligence and charm, shines as Margaret Schlegel, one of the idealistic sisters who finds herself caught between two contrasting families—the rich Wilcoxes and the

desperately poor Basts. You can binge all four episodes in one go in

this Christmas weekend marathon—just in time for

the January premiere of a new Atwell period

drama, The Long Song on MASTERPIECE.

FOR THE RECORD

COVID and the ClassroomThe pandemic has changed everything. And for high school seniors in Massachusetts, the stakes are high. In the GBH News series COVID and the Classroom, journalists follow students from the first day of school through graduation to find out how COVID-19 is impacting them, shaping their futures and playing out in their communities.

COLORADO EXPERIENCE

The Press of the West In the Old West, a printing press was considered to be a “civilizer.” So in 1911 when the newspaper in Mancos bought a high-end Cranston printer from the East Coast, it breathed life into the community. One hundred years later, a wild twist of fate led to a rediscovery of the rare press in its original building. That historic find put the tiny town on the map.Sun (12/27) at 1pm on GBH WORLD

COVER STORY

I n Frederick Wiseman’s newest film

City Hall, witness how Boston govern-ment employees serve the public in extraordinary ways.

The documentary opens in the city’s 311 call center, where operators at computers take call after call trying to solve problems about stray dogs, landlord issues,

road maintenance and more. On the other end of each phone call is someone who is looking for help.

“One of the things I discovered is how city government touches more directly all aspects of our daily lives than any other institution—more so than the state or federal government,” Wiseman said.

An architectural gem to some and a stone monstrosity to others, Boston City Hall is the seat of government for more than 692,000 city residents. It’s also a hive of activity, packed with elected offi-cials and thousands of employees carry-ing out the work of the people.

Down the hall, stop by a budget presen-tation. Next to that, visit a news confer-ence about security during the Red Sox 2018 World Series parade. In another room, listen in on a task force working to prevent evictions. Turn the corner, and two women are reciting marriage vows to each other in a ceremony led by a city employee.

For the People: Celebrating Public Service in City Hall

City Hall is the latest film from Wiseman about institutions that have played a major role in people’s lives. Some of his other films include Law and Order (1969), which follows the daily routine of the Kansas Police Department, Public Housing (1997) about the Ida B. Wells public housing development in Chicago, and Ex Libris, showcasing the New York Public Library (2017). All are part of his cinematic portfolio of familiar places with exceptional stories.

Born in Boston in 1930, Wiseman said he didn’t really know much about City Hall. With permission from Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, he learned by wander-ing the corridors of the 52-year-old structure, capturing bits and pieces of public service and governance. No nar-ration or voiceovers. Just people doing

their work for the residents of Boston.

He doesn’t sugar-coat anything, showing where city government falls short—in contracts for minority-owned business-es, in repairs for public housing and in mental health services for veterans. At the same time, Wiseman also holds citi-zens accountable. “If you just sit back and let everybody else do the work, then you’re not taking part,” he said. “You’re not making a contribution of your own ideas and your own experience.”

Wiseman goes on location to neighbor-hoods, a food bank, an animal care shel-ter and even Fenway Park—all the places people connect with government in all kinds of ways. He follows trash collec-tors, police officers, building inspectors, firefighters and others on the job. During 10 weeks in 2018 and 2019, he shot 110

hours of footage. And over the next 10 months—work-ing 10- to 12-hour days—he produced a four-hour and 34-minute film that captures the essence of demo- cracy in action.

The iconic film- maker is known for taking individual sequences and turning them into a highly edited but seamless dramatic

narrative. “I like to think in making these movies for 55 years that I’ve learned something about how they’re shot and how they’re edited,” he said. “I’m bringing my past experience to each new project.”

For example, a two-hour community meeting in Dorchester about a marijuana license became a tight 26-minute segment with city officials, neighborhood resi-dents and potential investors having a civil but frank dis-cussion about the impact a possible cannabis shop might have on traffic con-gestion, employ-ment opportunities and public safety.

“You can’t question the necessity of government. The question is how governmental functions are carried out.” Wiseman said. “I think what you see in City Hall is people who care and are trying to do their best.”

F or Joyce Linehan, a Dorchester native

and chief of policy and planning for the city of Boston, it’s not every day that you get mail from one of your favorite filmmakers.

“I’m a film buff, and I’ve been a fan of Fred Wiseman since I was a teenager,” she said. On that particular day, an unusual letter addressed to Boston Mayor Marty Walsh landed on her desk. Linehan said she and her team were intrigued by the possibility to work with the legendary filmmaker.

“Knowing Fred’s work, his whole magic power is that he extracts the humanity from institutions and puts it up on the screen—which is really a remarkable thing,” she said. Being a public servant, she said the idea of a movie about the nobility of public service was appealing.

Selling the idea to the mayor was easy, she said. The hard part was convincing other members of city government who were understandably skeptical about opening up the entire administration to cameras.

To film City Hall, Wiseman wanted access, and that’s what he got. But with 17,000 city employees and dozens of government meetings a week, Linehan and her staff had to work closely with the filmmaker and his three-person crew to keep them informed about what was going on in the behemoth building on any given day.

When the final cut was complete, Wiseman invited city employees for a screening of the film. The rhythm, the stunning shots of the city, the personal stories—all of it elegant-ly blended in the editing process. “It’s really remarkable to see how it unfolds.”

In particular, Linehan said she was struck by the blurred lines between city services and the social services that take place every day. “Many employees go above and beyond, pro- viding human contact to people who really need it.” And although government tends to move more slowly than some would like, she said City Hall focused on people doing the best work they possibly can.

“Fred is a real original—no one else does exactly what he does,” Linehan said. “I felt really lucky to have been involved in this and to see the master at work.”

The performances will be enhanced by recordings from musicians O’Donovan has partnered with before—from Edinburgh, County Kerry and Sligo. “We will be blending their music in with the bubble band’s in a techno-logical achievement that reaches across the ocean.”

GBH will share the proceeds of the event with the musicians and concert venues, hoping to reveal a light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel. “There’s a currency of hope that’s required in times like these,” O’Donovan said. “People need to see that hope is alive and that we’re not just looking back at the past.”

Beloved Holiday Ritual Shines Again

W hile most performing venues are dark and empty, the lights will

come up on A Christmas Celtic Sojourn in 2020.

Brian O’Donovan, host of GBH 89.7’s A Celtic Sojourn, will deliver his beloved holiday show as he has for 17 years—with its signature blend of Celtic, pagan and Christian traditions. “It will be particularly important this year, at the darkest time of year,” he said. “We have all been in a mire of trepidation. It’s so important to cele-brate hope and the coming of the light.”

The virtual performance will feature an original concert recorded in November. To create the show, O’Donovan and his performing troupe went into quarantine in late October, enabling them to be together for 10 days of rehearsals and recording sessions. “We refer to ourselves as a bubble band,” he said.

“A group of us were together for those 10 days, and nobody came in or out of that bubble,” O’Donovan said. Members of the group included musicians and some technical support staff. When it came time to record in November, videographers from DigiNovations came in under strict COVID-19 guidelines.

To make the show possible, Tony Beadle, president of Rockport Music, arranged for space at the Shalin Liu Performance Center for the recordings.  Then, one of its donor families—Bernie and Lorraine Horn—provided two houses to accommodate the partici-pants. “We just couldn’t possibly have achieved this without that help” said O’Donovan. “Their gift to us is, in fact, a gift of Christmas to our entire audience.”

O’Donovan then filmed an intro- duction at each of the venues in New Bedford, Worcester, Providence, Rockport and Boston. Audiences can reserve tickets for the virtual A Christmas Celtic Sojourn event at their favorite venue and watch from the comfort of their homes.

“Our goal is to be there virtually for our audiences, singing our familiar songs, visiting with musicians around the world in their homes while sharing their holiday traditions,” he said.  Among the featured musicians are Seamus Egan, Maeve Gilchrist, Natalie Haas, Chico Huff, Owen Marshall and Jenna Moynihan.

“Our motivation in producing this show—which is very fraught with technological, logistical and safety concerns—is to bring some comfort and joy to the audiences.”

The performances will not be the usual high-kicking, exuberant shows of late but attuned to people’s feelings during a pandemic, O’Donovan said. “This year’s show will be more reflective, a little lower key, perhaps a little more sentimental and nostalgic. But it will also be joyous.”

Music has transformative powers, he said. “It can make people reflect on their life circumstances, and it can amplify those feelings to the point of catharsis.”

LEARNING TOGETHER

What a fall semester it has been. I have watched my own children

—fifth graders—spend day after day learning in front of their screens.  Even though I know technology can-not replace the benefits of teacher-facili-tated learning in a physical classroom, I have also been able to observe its unique affordances. How a video-mediated classroom allows a shy child to partici-pate in a chat box while others shout out answers; how a dual-language, closed- captioned video allows an English learn-er to engage with and process informa-tion in two modes (visual and audio) and in two languages; how a math game offers students feedback in real time.

In the past few issues of EXPLORE GBH, I’ve shared some of the work that we are doing in response to school

Supporting Learners with Different Needs closures and explained how we are

adapting our curricular design to repre-sent and include diverse cultural and ethnic communities.

This month, I’d like to highlight some of the groundbreaking technical work we do in GBH Education to support learners who have different needs:

• Spanish Translations. We have translated into Spanish 80 of the science resources in our Bringing the Universe to America’s Classrooms collection on PBS LearningMedia. Many of our early childhood resources, such as the Peep and the Big Wide World family of games and activities and the Family Fun at Home summer initiative, are fully bilin-gual in English and Spanish.

• 508 Compliance. Our Bringing the Universe to America’s Classrooms collec-tion is developed to be 508-compliant, meaning it is accessible to students using assistive devices.

• Supports for English Learners. The 23 lesson plans in the Bringing the Universe to America’s Classrooms collection each include English learner supports—such as visuals— to address the needs of multilingual learners. In addition, we are developing a suite of digital tools that support English learners in using their bilingualism to make meaning out of complex scientific concepts.

Executive Director of Education Seeta Pai spotlights how GBH Education is making an impact in classrooms and communities locally and nationally.

strategies to help him learn to read and do basic math.     In GBH Education, we follow the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a framework to improve teaching and learning based on scientific insights about how people learn. UDL guides the design of instructional mate-rials so that they can be customized and adjusted to ensure that all learners can access and participate in meaningful learning. This means we always start by thinking about our learners first: How can we support them? What can we do to reduce barriers to learning?

Q Can you tell us more about how you’ve been making resources

more accessible to students with disabilities?

A We recently received funding to make our digital resources accessi-

ble for students with disabilities using assistive technologies. We worked closely with our in-house partners at the Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family National Center for Accessible Media to plan and implement our accessibility strategy. We closed-captioned all videos and added audio descriptions, created text descriptions for all images and developed keyboard and screen reader accessibility for our interactive lessons, slideshows and games.

opportunity to join GBH six years ago and have had the pleasure of working with dedicated colleagues who are committed to delivering unique and impactful learning resources.

Q How do you think about the needs of diverse learners?

A As a teacher, I learned that one- size-fits-all curricula and learning

resources do not work. They are designed for an “average” learner who simply does not exist. On a personal note, my younger brother was born with Down syndrome. I spent a good deal of time in my early years trying different

Q What motivated you to get into public media?

A Prior to GBH, I spent many years at K-12 education publishers, includ-

ing Scholastic and Houghton Mifflin, producing tools and digital content for educators and students across all subject areas and grade levels. I observed that GBH entered the field of digital learning and quickly made significant contribu-tions with high-quality media and support materials for the classroom. I was impressed by GBH’s iterative development process with significant teacher and student input. I had the

Radar with Callie Crossley, loves when listeners tell her that they’ve never heard of the guests on her show. For her, introducing new voices into the conversation is what makes radio compelling, important and interesting.

Her show, which airs Sundays on GBH 89.7 at 6pm, gives audiences an opportunity to hear diverse community voices sharing stories that media out-lets typically ignore.

The hourlong program features roundtable conversations based on a theme. Her guests include journalists from local news organiza-tions along with academics, pop culture critics, local authors, lead-ers from the Latinx and LGBTQ communities, environmentalists and professionals working in the food and wine world—all reflecting Crossley’s wide-ranging interests and the rich world of stories that hide in plain sight.

“Under the Radar doesn’t cover the news happening ‘today,’” Crossley said. “We focus on the news happening ‘these days.’ We pull a new thread from an overlooked trend and create conversations with unheard voices. I’m very intentional about who gets a seat at the table.”

Here’s an example of one of these untapped angles: To unpack the historical significance of the Black Lives Matter movement, Crossley hosted a conversation with a Smithsonian Museum curator responsible for collecting protest signs for posterity and a represen-tative from The Blackivists, a group of professional preservationists who focus on underdocumented communities.

Crossley said that audiences won’t find this conversation any-where else, and that makes it all the more important to share it.

“Eventually, the long view has the greatest impact,” she said.

DONOR PATHWAYS

GBH supporters are shaping the future of public media.

“GBH’s strong history of rich content makes it the perfect launchpad for the future of multiplatform media,” said Susan Luo, chair of the Ralph Lowell Society (RLS), GBH’s premier donor group. “GBH is redefining public media,” she added. "We are connecting with new audiences in exciting ways.” Donations through the RLS provide discretionary funds that can be used where needed most. In a rapidly chang-ing public media climate, unrestricted gifts are especially critical now, as they enable GBH to invest in new ideas and create content for an increasingly younger and multicultural audience.

“There has never been a better time to show your apprecia-tion for GBH and the programs, services and events that you’ve come to count on,” Luo said.

What’s Cooking on GBH? Lidia’s Baked SquashINGREDIENTS• 1 ¼ cup apple cider vinegar • 1 tablespoon sugar • ½ teaspoon Kosher salt, or more to taste• 6 garlic cloves, peeled and thinly sliced • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 1 small delicata squash, about 1 pound • 1 small acorn squash, about 1 pound • 1 small honey nut squash, about 1 pound • vegetable oil, as needed • 20 small fresh sage leaves • ¼ cup toasted sliced almonds

Join celebrity chef Lidia Bastianich as she travels to rural towns across America’s Heartland, meeting with some truly amazing people and families who share their heritage and culinary traditions. Her journey culminates in a meal, inspired by and prepared for the people she meets in Lidia Celebrates America: A Heartland Holiday Feast on Sat (12/19) at 1pm on GBH 2.

The cooler months of the year are the best time to find all varieties of sweet winter squash. For her delicious baked squash dish, Lidia especially likes the honey nut variety—it’s like butternut squash’s smaller, richer cousin. If you can’t find an assortment of squashes, feel free to use one large butternut. Enjoy!

TO PREPARESTEP 1 Mix the vinegar, sugar and salt together in a small saucepan. Let simmer over high heat until the sauce is reduced by half. Remove from the heat, add the garlic slices, and let the marinade cool. Stir in the olive oil. Slice all of the squash in half lengthwise, and scrape out all the seeds. You don’t need to peel the delicata or honey nut, but peel the ridges from the acorn squash. Cut crosswise into inch-thick half-rounds.

STEP 2 Pour a thin layer of vegetable oil into a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. When the oil sizzles on contact, add the sage leaves, and fry until just crisp for about two to three seconds. Remove to paper towels to drain, and season with salt.

STEP 3 Add a layer of squash to the pan, spaced slightly apart. Fry for about three minutes on the first side, then flip the slices over. Fry on the second side another two to three minutes, until the slices are easy to pierce with the tines of a fork, crisped on the surface and caramel-ized on the edges. Lift out the slices with a slotted spoon, and drain on paper towels. Season lightly with salt.

STEP 4 Repeat with the remaining squash. Arrange a single layer of fried squash in the bottom of a shallow serving dish, large enough to hold all of the squash. Scatter four or five sage leaves on top. Stir up the marinade, and drizzle a few spoonfuls over the squash. Scatter some of the garlic slices on the squash.

STEP 5 Layer all the squash in the dish, topping each layer of fried slices with sage leaves, marinade and garlic. Drizzle any remaining marinade over the top layer of squash. The mari-nated squash should sit at room temperature for a few hours. Sprinkle the almond slices over the top right before serving.
