This will all happen in a series of unique performances especially built for this March and partnering with the venues around New England where we normally would be presenting the show. The shows will be built especially for this unique year, and in this unique style, so we hope you can join us.

Equity in STEM EducationWomen, people of color, first-

generation students, low-income individuals, English language learners  and people with disabilities remain underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) industries.

In 2020, amid a national reckoning on systemic racism and racial inequities, scholars from across scientific fields came together to create virtual events, panels and social media campaigns to amplify the experiences and contribu-tions of Black scientists. Our science series NOVA contributed to that effort. For educators and students, these social media campaigns that promote inclu- sivity and intersectional diversity have created a platform for a new generation of scientists and science communicators who have long been underrepresented.

And this month, an important and powerful new Independent Lens film by Shalini Kantayya, Coded Bias (see cover story, page 14), showcases the essential research being undertaken by multicul-tural women in artificial intelligence, facial recognition and data algorithms, highlighting the vast discrimination and inequities that currently exist in these unregulated systems.

The GBH Education team also recently launched Design Squad Latinx (see page 18), a three-year initiative funded by the National Science Foundation, that furthers our successful Design Squad Global model of global science clubs. This project enables Latinx youth to view themselves as designers and engineers and to build from their strengths to expand their skills and participation in science and engineering.

If we want a nation where our future leaders and workers can understand and solve some of the complex challenges of tomorrow, building students’ skills, content knowledge and fluency in STEM fields are essential. A child’s ZIP code should not determine STEM fluency. To create more opportunity for Boston high school graduates to pursue studies in STEM, last year GBH established the Paula S. Apsell/GBH STEM Scholarship, named for the former executive produc-er of NOVA.

More information can be found here, and donations may be made to the fund.

We’re proud to create and present programs that help kids get excited about STEM with a long-term goal of building a pipe-line of diverse skilled workers ready to join the scientific ranks and contribute to ensuring equity across the Commonwealth and the nation.

On the HuntIt’s been about a year since the coronavirus changed our lives, so it’s appropriate to

kick off this roundup of notable programs with one about the man who is hunting for a solution to the pandemic. The other shows are worth tracking down too!

Stories from the Stage/All Mixed Up – Mon (3/22) at 9:30pm on GBH WORLD – When it comes to race, the in-between can be murky. If you’re born into two cultures, does one have to take prece-dence? And if it does, is the other auto-matically erased? Mayowa Lisa Reynolds, Harleen Sing and Samantha Thompson share stories of finding their place in their families and com-munities. Hosted by Wes Hazard.

America ReFramed/Bring It Home and The Place that Makes Us – Tue (3/23) and Tue (3/30) at 8pm on GBH WORLD – GBH WORLD’s America ReFramed series of independent documentaries features two films in March focused on a common theme: the impact of industrial decline on the communities that have tradition-ally relied on those industries. Bring It Home tells the stories of workers at a General Motors Co. plant in Lordstown, Ohio, who were left unemployed when the plant shut down. The Place that Makes Us looks at the plight of Youngstown, Ohio, which saw half of its population leave the city with the closing of its steel mills. But those who remained behind strive to envision a new future for themselves and their families.

GBH Senior Director of Programming Ron Bachman digs deep into our TV program offerings to highlight noteworthy shows that you might otherwise overlook.

Fauci: Virus Hunter – Thu (3/11) at 9pm on GBH WORLD – Everyone in America knows his name because of his role in helping to combat COVID-19. But how much do we really know about Dr. Anthony Fauci? This new documenta-ry provides an in-depth look at his life and career, giving an expansive view of the true depth and breadth of his con- tributions and service to this country and the world.

MASTERPIECE/The Miniaturist – Tue (3/16) at 8pm, 9pm, 10pm on GBH 44 – In recent months, The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix has become a much buzzed-

about series, thanks in no small part to a mesmerizing performance by Anya Taylor-Joy. She’s equally compelling in this MASTERPIECE adaptation of Jessie Burton’s novel about a woman in 17th-century

Amsterdam whose indifferent husband provides her with a

mysterious dollhouse to occupy her time. If

you missed this the first time around,

catch up with it now in a one-night binge of all three episodes.

When Data DiscriminatesOrdinary People Who Take on Big Tech

A self-described sci-fi fanatic, filmmaker Shalini Kantayya (below) uses her lens to look at the

impact of technology on society. “We have this idea that a technological solution is always the best solution, that technology will save us from all the harms of the world,” she said.

While researching Coded Bias, her documentary that premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, she wanted to find out what artificial intelligence (AI) is and how it affects people’s lives. What she learned was eye-opening.

“I didn’t realize the degree to which we are outsourcing our decision-making to machines,” said Kantayya, adding that AI is what drives that process. “The first thing that we have to understand about AI is how it works.”

AI is a mathematical scoring system, or algorithm, that calculates the probability of what you’re likely to do in the future. Are you going to pay back a loan? Are you going to get sick? Are you going to com-mit a crime?

Algorithms predict future success based on historical data, but embedded within that data are often decades of inequities. So, for example, a prediction on whether women will be successful home owners might be skewed by data that doesn’t take into account that they haven’t traditionally had the same access to mortgages or have systematically been paid less than men. The same applies to historical data for people of color. Based on the existing data, those groups might be rejected when applying for mortgages with no chance to appeal the decision.

“That’s the danger of AI,” she said, “because even engineers with the best of intentions can do unintended harm that has real consequences for people and their life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.” When that happens, some people step up.

Meet Silkie Carlo, a civil liberties activist who questions the right of London’s metropolitan police to use real-time facial recognition to compare passers-by on a busy London street to a secret watch list of suspected crimi-nals. Witness the story of Icemae Downes (left), whose landlord arbitrari-ly installed a facial recognition entry system to monitor tenants in her Brooklyn housing complex. Hear from Daniel Santos, an award-winning middle school teacher in Texas at risk of losing his job because a mathematical model used by the school district relied on an algorithm—instead of classroom visits—to classify him as a bad teacher.

In the opening scene of Coded Bias, Joy Buolamwini (below) discovers that the

facial recognition software she was using for a project did not accurately identify darker skinned faces and the faces of women. That realization prompts her to launch an investi-gation of widespread bias in algorithms.

A Ph.D. candidate at MIT, Buolamwini is just one of many women researchers, data scientists and activists, featured in the film by Shalini Kantayya, who are taking the lead to expose the systematic biases of artificial intel-ligence in today’s society. She pioneered techniques that are now leading to increased transparency in the use of facial analysis sys-tems globally and founded the Algorithmic Justice League to fight the harmful bias embedded in technology.

“People who have been marginalized will be further marginalized if we’re not looking at ways of making sure the technology we’re creating doesn’t propagate bias,” Buolamwini said. “That’s when I started to realize algorith-mic justice—making sure there’s oversight in the age of automation—is one of the largest civil rights concerns we have.”

With a Ph.D. in mathematics from Harvard University, Cathy O’Neil used quantitative skills and statistical methods to predict patterns in the finance industry. She became disillusioned when she saw that algorithms were actually reinforcing old biases and power dynamics.

In her book Weapons of Math Destruction, she describes how Big Data increases inequality and threatens democ-racy. Now a data scientist, she helps com-panies and organizations manage and audit their algorithmic risks.

“Algorithms are very useful mecha-nisms to bypass accountability and are often used that way,” O’Neil said. “That’s why we need government to step up, scrutinize important algorithms and force accountability onto the companies that use them.”

“We’re really at the beginning of a conversation about building a culture that supports humane and ethical uses of technology,” Kantayya said. “What Coded Bias challenges us to do is say

this isn’t about the perfect algorithm. It’s about building a more humane culture that values the inherent value of every human being.”

It’s all about who owns the code and how they use it on other people, Kantayya said. Right now, there’s no accountability in the process. “All of these people in the film talk about the fear they had challenging this power because of the knowledge gap,” she said. “Knowledge is power, and—with AI— all the power is concentrated in a few hands.” While making Coded Bias, she said, “I was reminded that everyday people can make a huge difference.”

Although the fight against Big Tech has gone on for years, Kantayya said she is hopeful lawmakers finally understand that corporations that control massive databases of personal information need federal oversight.

A year ago, ANTIQUES ROADSHOW was in full swing, planning its five-

city filming tour—including a stop at the Boston Public Library.

A month later, those plans collapsed because of COVID-19.

“I cried when I realized we had to cancel our summer tour,” said Marsha Bemko (right), the series’ longtime executive producer. “The ANTIQUES ROADSHOW tour is like summer camp for us. We are addicted to the tour. We want to go so, so badly,” she said.

Currently in Season 25, new segments will debut in May that bring viewers into the homes of almost 20 celebri-ties—comedians, authors, actors, an Olympic athlete and more—to appraise their beloved items.

“It simply was not an option to deprive our viewers of ANTIQUES ROADSHOW,” she said. “People depend on us. It’s one of the most pop-ular programs in prime time.”

With the new programming, the huge filming tours of the past that involved almost 400 people—including crew, staff, volunteers and appraisers—have been replaced by tight 10-person crews who travel separately by car and follow COVID-19 protocols.

The program visited celebrities in their homes, in such places as Manhattan, Washington, D.C., and Newport, Rhode Island—all within driv-ing distance of Boston—and let celebri-ties’ curiosity steer the conversation.

One celebrity had a bust in his home and wanted to know if it was President Grover Cleveland. Another African American prime-time actress wanted appraisers to weigh in on her collection of Black memorabilia. “They may be celebrities, but they are people just like you and me,” said Bemko. “They own everyday things that are meaningful to them. Some are valuable, some are not.”

Bemko is cautiously optimistic that ANTIQUES ROADSHOW will resume its traditional schedule later in 2021. “ANTIQUES ROADSHOW teaches history with material culture,” she said. “This new season is

with a Twist

But during the pandemic, it wasn’t possible to tour because it involves air travel, hundreds of people in the same room and close conversations. “During filming, we are on top of each other like bear cubs,” Bemko said. “There was no way to do ROADSHOW and have COVID safety protocols in place.”

But as anyone who knows Bemko knows, she doesn’t dwell on what she can’t do. So she and her team turned the defeats of COVID-19 into a win, for example, by revisiting episodes with the most interesting finds and remixing them into thematic collections.

ROADSHOW with a twist. It’s like Finding Your Roots—we’ll learn about the people, we’ll learn about ourselves, and at the same time, we’re learning about fas-cinating items.”

Culturally Responsive ClassroomsEducators have long advocated for respecting and including

students’ cultural and linguistic backgrounds in the classroom as a way to enable students  to learn and see themselves succeeding academically. These efforts usually occur in the humanities, for example, reading diverse authors in English Language Arts class-rooms or incorporating varied perspectives in history class.

In the GBH Education department, we are focusing on diverse ways of knowing and doing science, which is as influenced by historical, societal and personal biases as any other subject. Further, racial inequities persist in school resources, academic opportunities and teacher treatment of non-white students.

Our new program Design Squad Latinx (see next page), a middle school program that focuses on teaching engineering design in a culturally responsive way, debunks stereotypes about who can be a scientist and connects science to students’ everyday lives.

Our recently developed A Framework for Diversity and Equity in K-12 Science Educational Media exam-ines the latest research and outlines what cultural and linguistic responsiveness looks like in K-12 science education and how educational media can

help achieve that vision.

Designed for media producers, the framework is also useful for

program designers and teach-ers who incorporate media

in their programs and classrooms. In January, we hosted a virtual Educator Peer Exchange, where we demonstrated how to use the framework

to integrate media into science lesson plans in a

culturally responsive way.

Building STEM Skills for Latinx StudentsThe need for engineering jobs in

our economy is growing steadily. To prepare students to take on these jobs, it’s critical to nurture interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) early, especially in middle school, when lifelong attitudes and academic identities are formed.

However, people of Latinx origin are disproportionately underrepresented in STEM education. According to the National Science Foundation, only 13.5% of bachelor’s degrees in science were awarded to Hispanic or Latinx students. Increasing Latinx engineering

A Year Apart: HowCOVID Changed UsEver since a state of emergency was declared on

March 10, 2020, Massachusetts residents have navigated the threat of the coronavirus as it upended and radically changed our lives.

To mark the one-year anniversary of this chal-lenging year, on March 10, 2021, GBH News will dedicate all of its local programming to one unifying theme. “A Year Apart: How COVID Changed Us”

invites audiences to pause, reflect and share their experiences living with the pandemic and its profound impact on our world and our communities.

“We’re asking our journalists and our audience to take a beat,” said Pam Johnston, general manager of GBH News. “To rise above the intensity of the daily news cycle to

take stock in where we are, what we have lived through and what is yet to come as it relates to COVID-19.”

Throughout this day, all GBH local news programs will unpack this idea, focusing on a variety of themes and aspects as they relate to the pandemic. Audiences tuning in to Morning Edition, Boston Public Radio, All Things Considered, In It Together and Greater Boston will also be invited to share their reflections on this one-year anniversary.

In the evening, audiences, journalists and experts will gather to share their perspectives during a special community conversation in GBH News’ virtual Zoom studio. Follow GBH News at 89.7 FM and gbh.org/news

But the show casts an even wider net, said Todd, whose public affairs program airs three times a week on the Cape and Islands affiliate of GBH. In a recent month, she hosted shows on art and activism, COVID on the Cape, racism and fear, and the future of work.

“We never run out of material,” said Todd,  CAI managing director of editorial. “There are a lot of national issues that have a connec-tion to this region, and we also feature local issues and authors.”

Listeners might hear from lecturers who have spoken at the Friends of the Marine Biological Laboratory’s Falmouth Forum. Another day, it might be a panel on bullying at work or a discussion of the first encounter in Eastham in 1620 of colonists and Indigenous people.

On a recent segment, Todd spoke with Black artist Robin Joyce Miller about the intersection of her art, education and activism, as demonstrated in her painting “Sunday Morning” (below). Her husband, poet Jim Miller, joined to describe the monthly Cape panel series they curate on Black Lives Matter.

The majestic skyscrapers of Manhattan were quite a sight for

Lidia Bastianich, who grew up in the country and immigrated to the big city as a young girl. When her parents returned home from work late in the evening, Lidia helped out by cooking dinner most nights. Back then, soups were a popular choice to feed a family.

Tune in to Lidia’s Kitchen on Sat (3/27) at 1:30pm on GBH 2 to see the celebrity chef on a return visit to New York, where she prepares a simple but filling potato and pasta soup followed by polenta with honey and berries.

What’s Cooking on GBH? Potato and Pasta Soup | Serves 6 to 8

INGREDIENTS• 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling

• 3 medium russet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/2 inch cubes (about 1 3/4 pounds)

• 2 medium carrots, diced

• 2 stalks celery, diced

• Kosher salt and peperoncino

• 2 tablespoons tomato paste

• 4 fresh bay leaves

• 1 or 2 pieces of rind from a wedge of Grana Padano, washed (save the rind from the cheese below)

• 1 cup small pasta shapes (pastina, ditalini, pennette, etc.)

• 1/3 cup chopped fresh Italian parsley

• Grated Grana Padano, for serving

TO PREPARESTEP 1 Heat the olive oil in a large Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the potatoes and cook until lightly browned and they begin to stick to the bottom of the pan, about 5 minutes. Add the carrots and celery. Season with salt and a pinch of peperoncino. Cook and stir until the carrots and celery begin to wilt, 2 to 3 minutes.

STEP 2 Make a spot in the center of the pan and add the tomato paste. Let toast for a minute, then stir into the vegetables. Add 10 cups of water, the bay leaves and cheese rind. Bring to a simmer. Cook at a vigorous simmer until the potatoes have begun to full apart and thicken the soup, about 30 minutes.

STEP 3 Add the pasta to the soup and simmer until al dente. Discard the bay leaves and what’s left of the cheese rind. Stir in the parsley. Serve with soup with a sprinkle of grated cheese and a drizzle of oil.
