The Pied Piper of Hamelin
It is the year 1284 in Hamelin, Germany. The townis full of horrible rats. They are everywhere – in thestreets, in the shops, even in the houses! One day,a strange man appears in the town. He is dressedin clothes of many colours and he is carrying apipe. People call him the Pied Piper. He says he canmake the rats go away and asks for some money.
The Mayor agrees to pay himand the Pied Piper beginsto play on his pipe. As if by
magic, all the rats runafter the Pied Piper. They
follow him all the wayto the river and thenthey all fall in!

The Pied Piper asks for his moneybut the Mayor does not pay him andhe goes away. A few weeks later, the
Pied Piper comes back to Hamelin. Hebegins to play his pipe again. This time,all the children of the town follow him.
They go far away, up into the hills.
From that day on, no one ever sees thechildren again. The Mayor feels very
sorry about not giving the Pied Piperhis money. But, it is too late. The
children are lost forever!
