MIDDLE EAST

The Middle East is a vast and beautiful region comprised of the lands around the southern and eastern shores of the Mediterranean

Sea, extending from Morocco to the Arabian Peninsula; think golden beaches, bustling cities and authentic cultural experiences. From the breath-taking ancient city built into rock at Petra in Jordan, now one of the 7 New Wonders of the World, to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed sacred site at Jerusalem; a hot air balloon ride over the Wadi Rum desert to floating in the Dead Sea, the Middle East truly has something for everyone.

DubaiPerched on the sun-drenched Gulf coastline, Dubai has so much to offer and guaranteed glorious weather to match. Imagine world-class dining, incredible architecture, a myriad of shopping experiences, lavish spas and spectacularly chic hotels and resorts, all in one city. There are theme parks for families or romantic meals in tranquil desert locations for couples – what’s not to love?

Ras Al Khaimah Ras Al Khaimah offers a truly authentic Arabian experience; from its golden beaches, lush mangroves and terracotta deserts, to the towering Hajar Mountains bordering Oman. Along with a plethora of natural attractions and activities, Ras Al Khaimah boasts a number of ancient archaeological sites, providing a fascinating insight into its rich culture. For adventure enthusiasts, spend a day mountain biking on the UAE’s highest mountain, Jebel Jais.

Who? Couples and families.

Where? On 400 metres of private shoreline on the crescent of the world-famous Palm Jumeirah, just off the Dubai coast.

Why? The combination of a beach escape with memorable excursions and quick access to all the delights that this colourful city has to offer.

The first over-water villas of their kind in the Middle East, complete with glass viewing panels in the floor, are a big selling point of

this unique resort inspired by Thai architecture. But the elegant Anantara spa is equally worthy of your attention, with its traditional Turkish Hammams, couples’ suites each with a steam bath or sauna, experience showers and whirlpool with Microsilk technology.

Desert quad safaris and cruises across the Gulf of Arabia to Dubai Marina aboard the resort’s own long-tail boat are just two of the excursions that may tempt you to leave this palatial property, but reasons to stay on-site are plentiful. They include a 50-metre infinity pool, water-skiing, a kids’ club for ages 3–13 years, a teen club, a swim-up bar, the low-lit Lotus Lounge with DJ sessions, shisha and cigar menu, and Crescendo for local and global fare on an alfresco terrace overlooking the Gulf.

Who? Couples and families.

Where? On a private beach on the West Crescent of the exclusive Palm Jumeirah.

Why? The Talise Ottoman Spa is one of the largest and most luxurious award-winning spas in the Middle East, with 42 individual treatment rooms spanning across two floors including a VIP couples area.

This destination-resort was inspired by the Ottoman era and, as well as elegant rooms, offers lavish suites and Royal Residence villas

with hand-painted interiors and crafted marble, the latter boasting up to five bedrooms. With stunning views of the Arabian Gulf and the Dubai skyline on each side, the resort features an infinity pool, two Jacuzzis and a kids’ pool, award-winning restaurants and a vast and opulent spa.

The Jumeirah Zabeel Saray offers easy access to the business district, world-class golf courses, theme parks, shopping malls and traditional souks, while providing guests with a tranquil haven. Equipped with its own jetty, it provides boat transfers to and from Dubai Marina. Back on-site, the Sinbad’s Kids Club engages ages 4–16 years in the likes of rock-climbing, cinema screenings and cookery, as well as offering its own mini water-park, and there are also water sports, tennis courts with professional tennis coaching, beach volleyball and live performances in the Music Hall.

Who? Couples and families.

Where? At the apex of Palm Jumeirah island, where it was the first hotel to be built.

Why? Spectacular on-site facilities combined with unforgettable excursions such as helicopter tours and yacht and boat cruises.

This iconic ocean-themed resort gives you all the reasons in the world not to venture further afield, including more than 20 dining

options ranging from the legendary Nobu to a burger bar and ‘night brunches’ with street performers and acrobats. It’s also home to several of Dubai’s main family attractions, including Aquaventure Waterpark and the Lost Chambers Aquarium, to which guests get free access, and has an out-of-this-world kids’ club with an underwater theatre (ages 3–12 years) and teen Club Rush with its mocktail bar and entertainment lounges.

The vast majority of the large and airy rooms here interconnect, although all rooms sleep four and there are also two-bedroom suites. Every one of them has fabulous views – whether it be of the Arabian Sea, Palm Island or the Dubai skyline. If you upgrade to the Imperial Club, you’ll enjoy the additional use of an exclusive beach club.

Who? Couples.

Where? On a private beach on the west crescent of the Palm Jumeirah, within easy reach of major Dubai sights.

Why? Tours ranging from desert safaris to day cruises and for its proximity to attractions including Skydive Dubai and one of the world’s longest overwater zip-lines.

Opened in 2019, this boutique-style hotel certainly has the hipness factor, with its AWAY® Spa, a fitness program that includes KO8,

aerial yoga and pole-fit, the WET® deck adult-only pool area with its DJ booth and Friday brunch pool parties, and SoBe rooftop bar with its 360° views of the Dubai skyline and Arabian Sea, serving Latin American cuisine. When you’re not soaking up the sun on the beach or by one of the pools, activities and amenities include kayaking, squash and jogging trails.

Unabashedly glitzy, contemporary rooms and suites all have Gulf of Arabia or Dubai skyline views, while the food in the two destination restaurants is by Michelin-starred chefs – Torno Subito is Massimo Bottura’s first restaurant outside Italy, while Akira Back is the Japanese-influenced Korean chef’s virgin foray into the Middle East.

Who? Couples and families.

Where? Overlooking Al Maqta creek, a 20-minute transfer from Abu Dhabi International Airport.

Why? Its setting against the incredible backdrop of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and only minutes from the vibrant city centre and the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

Blending architecture inspired by the Italian Renaissance with Middle Eastern traditions, this elegant property is blessed with

two private beaches, one of Abu Dhabi’s largest outdoor swimming pools, and glorious sunrise and sunset views. Eight restaurants include a Southeast Asian venue with Grand Mosque views and an open kitchen where you can watch chefs prepare dim sum and classic rice and noodle dishes, an alfresco spot serving local and Lebanese dishes, shisha and traditional tea, and an Italian-style ice-cream parlour.

The Ritz Kids club entertains ages 4–12 years, while accommodation ranges from sleek rooms with a king or two double beds to suites and a villa with up to two bedrooms – the latter with a private plunge pool. For those in need of some ‘me time’, the huge beachfront spa – which draws on Bedouin traditions – includes 16 treatment rooms and a Hammam set amidst plunge pools, waterfalls and lush greenery.

Who? Couples and families.

Where? On a private beach surrounded by deserts, mountains and sea, 45 minutes from Dubai International Airport.

Why? For its location next to an 18-hole championship golf course and a short walk from Al Hamra mall.

The fact that this splendid hotel was built as a palace is reflected in its generously proportioned rooms, which come with views

of the pristine Arabian shoreline or neighbouring golf course. This, combined with its award-winning spa complete with a flotation bed and signature herbal sauna, plus 10 stylish restaurants and lounges, make it one of RAK’s very best choices.

Of the two pools, one is adult-only for those looking for a little quiet time, while there’s also the Pearl Kids' Club for ages four to 12 years, with both indoor and outdoor activities depending on the time of day. Both motorised and non-motorised water sports are available. Day 2 Explore the Japanese capital with a private guide, beginning with a visit to Yanaka, one of Tokyo’s shitamachi (old towns), with its artists and craftsmen. Stop by the Asakura Museum of Sculpture, before walking back to Yanaka Ginza, lined with food stalls, speciality shops and teahouses. Then take the train to Asakusa, another shitamachi – the city’s oldest geisha district and home to Senso-ji, Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple.

In the afternoon, cross Tokyo to Omotesando, a tree-lined avenue with fashion flagship boutiques including the Prada Store by Herzog & de Meuron. Continue towards Harajuku, a haven for fashionistas and popular meeting place for eccentrically dressed teenagers. Lastly, visit Meiji Jingu, Tokyo’s most famous shrine, a popular venue for Shinto weddings.

Day 3 Explore at your leisure, or join a specialised tour. Watch kabuki with an expert, explore the quirky streets of Akihabara or photograph the city’s backstreets.

Day 4 Start the journey to Hida, the northern region of Gifu prefecture, blessed with vast forests producing large amounts of timber used in the area’s traditional architecture. The first leg of the trip is on a bullet train at speeds of up to 260 km/h. This is followed by a ride on the limited express train Wide View – one of the most scenic train journeys in Japan. In Takayama, stay in a ryokan, a traditional inn with paper sliding doors, futon beds and tatami flooring.

Day 5 You've a free day to explore, with the option to learn about the traditional architecture of Hida with a local guide or visit century-old farmhouses in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Shirakawago.

Day 6 Take a private car-trip to Kanazawa, a castle town that has become a centre for classical and contemporary arts, from traditional crafts such as Kaga-Yuzen silk-dyeing and gold-leaf production to modern artworks displayed at the 21st Century Museum.

Accommodation is at the Sainoniwa Hotel, with its own small gallery of local crafts.

Day 7 Accompanied by a guide, visit Kenroku-en Garden, ranked one of Japan’s top three gardens, and neighbouring Kanazawa Castle, accessed through the Ishikawa-mon Gate, a designated Important National Cultural Asset. A Caribbean honeymoon can be pure relaxation, or it can be a mix of chilling out on the beach and beside the pool with adventure,

exciting activities, culture and gastronomic discovery.

From catamaran trips and foodie retreats to hiking in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica, and from gentle reef snorkelling or horseback-riding in the sea to the adrenaline rush of dune-buggy driving and rainforest zip-lining, the Caribbean has something for each and every couple.

There’s also nightlife galore should you want it, and some of the friendliest locals on the planet, but no one will bat an eyelid if you just want to kick back together and watch the sun set over the rim of a rum punch or head to the spa for an indulgent couples’ treatment. A honeymoon in the Caribbean is the stuff that dreams are made of…

Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation or a family getaway (or a combination of all three), Barbados is a fantastic holiday

destination. Glorious beaches, spectacular landscapes and year-round sunshine make this lively island one of the most sought-after Caribbean islands. Most people stay on the Platinum Coast with its fascinating culture, exquisite colonial architecture in historic Bridgetown, picturesque villages and luxurious resorts, but make sure to hire a car for the day and take a picnic over to the unspoilt east coast with its dramatic clifftops, rock formations and stunning Atlantic waters.

Don’t miss Oistins Fish Fry, a Friday-night institution that draws locals and visitors from all over the island for its food stalls cooking up tuna, swordfish, marlin, mahi-mahi, flying fish, lobster and more, its arts and crafts vendors, and its music – both ‘Back-in-time’ (Bob Marley, Platters, Jimmy Cliff, Jamaican ska and old country and western) and calypso, including current Crop Over hits.
