Growing older in America is characterized by rapid changes. We are discarding negative stereotypes and seizing control of our lives. New social innovations are now the expected not the exception. The Explorers Lifelong Learning Institute is such an innovation. When we retire, we may miss the intellectual challenges and interpersonal relationships that made our lives interesting during our careers. Like our muscles, our minds need exercise to stay young. The Explorers Lifelong Learning Institute recognizes this need and invites people 50 years or older to join us in exercising our minds and keeping vital.
As older adults, we can be intense, self-motivated learners. We can explore new subjects and share our collective knowledge and experiences. The Explorers Lifelong Learning Institute encourages us to continue learning, to expand our horizons and to enhance our personal development. There are no academic admissions requirements, no examinations, no grades; learning is its own reward. Our greatest resource is the exuberant wisdom of our membership.

SPRING SEMESTER 2017
The Explorers Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) is a member-directed learning group, one of over 400 such organizations in the United States and Canada that are affiliated with the The Road Scholar Institute Network. Since 1992, seniors in the greater Salem community, mostly retirees with diverse backgrounds, have joined Explorers by paying an annual membership fee.
Members and presenters join in active peer learning to share their knowledge and experience by creating, coordinating and participating in courses on a voluntary basis. We provide programs that are challenging, thought-provoking, sometimes controversial and frequently interactive. These vary in length from a day to a semester; range in format from lectures and discussions to hands-on workshops and field trips; and cover topics from the arts and sciences to current events and foreign affairs. Classes meet in rooms which range from small to auditorium-style accommodations. Some courses, designated “study groups” require active participation of attendees, such as preparing information to share with the class. Classrooms are located on the first floor of the Explorers Center at 10 Federal Street in Salem. They are equipped with visual aids, audio equipment and lighting as requested by course leaders.
The Explorers Lifelong Learning Institute offers two academic terms a year, beginning in September and March. Members may enroll in up to five courses per semester. Classes meet for two hours, either mornings or afternoons. Students and leaders often have lunch together between classes. Classes are held Monday through Thursday. On selected Friday mornings, a “Coffee Hour” features a guest lecturer. Between terms there are Intersession programs which feature events two mornings a week. Members and their guests are welcome to attend the coffees and all Intersession events.

MEMBERSHIP FEES
The 6 month, non-refundable single membership fee of $150.00 or spousal non-refundable fee of $260 admits new members from January 1, 2017 to June 30, 2017. Special charges may be requested for some individual courses. Please use the registration form in the centerfold of this catalogue to apply for membership and to register for courses. Registrations are accepted on a year round basis. In the event that a course is oversubscribed, enrollment will be based on a review of all applications received on or before Thursday, January 26, 2017. Notification will be sent to those confirmed; all others will be placed on a waiting list. Fee reductions are available based on need. He first developed his skills as a writer of short fiction, then branched into a superb novelist. Think Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man or Ulysses. Colum McCann, both Irish and American, forged a similar path in the 21st century. 110 Hollywood During World War II: The Home Front, Course IIMonday 2-4 pmClass Leader: Edward FriedmanMarch 6, 13, 20, 27; April 3, 10, 17, 24; May 1When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and Germany declared war on the United States 4 days later, all arguments here about the propriety of aiding Britain ended. We had actually been in an undeclared war against German since 1939 and an economic war against Japan since the early 30s, but from this point on there was no longer any hedging.
Hollywood dove right in. Many served in the armed forces, but Hollywood also aided the war effort in many ways, e.g., training films, propaganda films, troupes travelling around the country and the world to entertain our service men and women here and abroad, etc.
Many films of that era depict Americans fighting World War II, but fewer discuss how Americans at home dealt with the conflict. This course will cover 8 movies released between 1940 and 1946 that show how American (and in one case, British) civilians not actually in the fighting responded, and how involved Hollywood was in the war effort. The movies below helped to build and strengthen home front support for the war effort. Except for The House on 92nd Street, a propaganda film based on actual facts, these films are fiction. The first three are spy thrillers, and the remaining five are love stories backdropped by the war.
The first three weeks will present the spy thrillers THE HOUSE ON 92ND STREET, FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT and ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT. The romantic comedies THE MORE THE MERRIER and HERS TO HOLD will be shown on weeks 4 and 5, respectively. The dramas, CASABLANCA, THE AMAZING MRS. HOLLIDAY and A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH (which was released in America as STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN) will be shown on weeks 6 through 8, respectively. Course Format: 8 movies to be shown in 8 or 9 sessions.

March 31, 2017The Boys in the Boat…the Rest of the Story James Pocock, great-nephew of George PocockThe Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown is about the 1936 Olympic crew from the University of Washington that won the gold medal in Berlin against overwhelming odds. A central figure in the book is the boat builder George Pocock, arguably the most influential man in crew racing in the last hundred years. Our guest will speak about his great uncle as well as his grandfather who together built a total of 21 Olympic gold medal winning boats.
Jim Pocock will talk about the development of the sport of rowing in America and tell many interesting stories not included in the book. He is a Minister and Administrator at Gordon College and lives in Gloucester.
April 7, 2017 Digging Deep–Fascinating Facts about Boston’s Historic Burial Grounds Kelly Thomas, Curator, the Boston Historic Burying Grounds Initiative Our guest is cemetery preservationist for 16 burying grounds in Boston, including the Granary, Kings Chapel and Copp’s Hill. A portion of her presentation will include describing the iconography of historic gravestones. The Historic Burying Grounds Initiative is a public- private co-op program of the Parks and Recreation Department.
Kelly Thomas mission is to document, restore and interpret Boston’s historic cemeteries which date from between 1640 and 1841 and are located in 13 Boston neighborhoods, comprising over 12,000 headstones.

April 21, 2017The History of the U.S. Lightship Service, 1820-1985Robert Mennino Jr., President of the U.S. Lightship MuseumOur guest will share the fascinating story of Nantucket Lightship/LV-112, a National Historic Landmark and National Treasure, which functioned as a “floating lighthouse,” in the coastal shoals off Nantucket Island. Built in 1935 and nicknamed the “Statue of Liberty of the Sea,” the Nantucket was the first landmark seen by transatlantic ships entering American waters from Europe.
Robert Mennino of Beverly is dedicated to restoring the Nantucket Lightship to her original condition. Today the ship is berthed in her homeport of East Boston and open to the public as a maritime museum.
April 28, 2017Marblehead’s Role in the War of 1812Judy Anderson, Social and Cultural HistorianOur guest will review Marblehead’s dramatic but little known role in the three-year War of 1812. More than 1,000 Marblehead men and boys suffered and died– a sixth of the town’s population. As late as April 1815, nearly half of them remained as prisoners of war in England’s notorious Dartmoor prison, months after the peace was signed. Judy Anderson is the sole proprietor of Marblehead Architecture Heritage & Tours. She served as the former curator of the Jeremiah Lee Mansion. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from UCLA and a Masters Degree from the University of Southern California and lives in Marblehead.

BUILDING EVACUATION PROCEDURES
When the directive comes for the building to be evacuated, you should stop whatever you are doing and head for the hall door as quickly as possible.
Because you need to be able to hear directions as you exit, there must be no talking.
Proceed directly to the hall. Do not stop for coats or personal belongings unless someone from the office or a board member tells you to do so.
When you enter the hall, turn right and exit to St. Peter Street, As you exit, you will be given directions where to gather outside the building.
If the hallway is not passable, go to a classroom with windows, open the windows, close the door and wait for evacuation.
Stay with your classmates and your class leader. In an emergency, it will be necessary to take attendance once everyone is presumed to be out of the building.
Do not re-enter the building unless everyone is given permission to do so.
If you are handicapped and unable to negotiate the steps to St. Peter Street, turn left and use the ramp exits located at: 10 Federal St. or at the far end of the building.
