• The apostle Paul exhorts the Colossian church to set their love on things above. This reveals the ability that one has to control his love as seen in Psalm 91:14 because he hath set his love upon me therefore will I deliver him

• The phrase “right hand of God” means the place of power and authority. The old life is dead but the new life is hid with Christ in God. This place of Salvation and blessing can only be if the old life is dead and hid in Jesus Christ.

• Colossians 3:5 -14


• In Paul’s exhortation to holiness, his emphasis is upon what the Christian has to do

• Kill the desires of the flesh• He has to rid himself of certain things • After he has died in the flesh and laid aside the works of

the flesh • He has to clothe himself with the beautiful attributes of

holiness • It is important to understand the Christians own

responsibility in this exhortation.


• Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth

• Fornication from the Greek “Porneia” is used in this verse meaning illicit sexual intercourse.

• Uncleanness from the Greek “Akatharsia” is used in this verse to mean moral uncleanness and is suggestive of the fact that that sensuality and evil doctrine are frequently associated.


• Inordinate affection Greek “Pathos” from “pascho” to suffer, primarily denotes whatever one suffers or experiences in any way hence an affection of the mind, a passionate desire used by the Greeks either of good or bad desires it is always used in the new testament of the latter (Bad desire) Col 3:5 AV “inordinate affections” RV “passion”


• Evil concupiscence from the Greek “Epithumia” meaning over desire passion.

• Covetousness From the “Greek” meaning a desire to have more and is used always in a bad sense. perhaps most needed in modern Christendom is a desire to own nothing and a prayer to be delivered from things and from ambition.

• To call covetousness idolatry is not too strong if we realise that, when we strongly desire to own a thing it actually owns apart of us.


• Idolatry from the Greek “Eidololatria” from eidolon and latreia service.

• For Paul to call covetousness idolatry is not too strong if we realise that, when we strongly desire to own a thing it actually owns apart of us.

• Anger, Greek “Ogre” • originally any natural impulse, or desire, or disposition,

wrath of man. Ogre suggests a more settled or abiding condition of mind frequently with a view to revenge Ogre is less sudden in its rise than wrath Greek “Thumos” but more lasting in its nature.

• Wrath Greek “Thumos” meaning hot anger, passion• is to be distinguished from Orge in this respect that

thumos indicates a more agitated condition of the feelings an out burst of wrath from inward indignation thumos expresses more the inward feelings thumos may issue in revenge though it does not necessarily conclude it. It is characteristic that it quickly blazes up and quickly subsides though that is not necessarily implied in each case


• Malice,

• Greek “Kakia” meaning badness in quality and is the opposite of “arete” meaning excellence. Kakia is used in the following ways Malice, Maliciousness, Malicious any one showing these traits, are indeed a very unpleasant person.


• Filthy communication out of your mouth

• Filthy communication the word filthy in the Greek “Aischrologia” which denotes any kind of base utterance,

• This is the utterance of an uncontrolled tongue rendered filthy communication in the AV and in the RV the rendering is shameful speaking the Christian should avoid all foul, filthy and abusive utterance.

• Charity Greek “agape” Christian love whether exercised towards the brethren or towards men generally, is not a impulse from the feelings it does not always run with the natural inclinations, nor does it spend itself only upon those whom some affinity is discovered.

• love seeks the welfare of all Rom 15:2 and works no ill to any I Cor 13:8-10 love seeks opportunity to do good to all men and especially towards them that are of the household of faith Gal 6:10.

Peace of GodPeace of God

• Col 3:15 • And let the peace of God rule in your hearts to the which

ye are called in one body and be ye thankful

• The word peace in the Greek is “Eirene” and is used to

denote unity, concord.

The spiritual wayThe spiritual way

• Col 3:16 Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom teaching one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

• Often the modern Christian will unfortunately for sake the study of the bible and instead replace this with reading a bible commentary this would be like going to the dinner table and instead of eating the food on the plate try eating the cutlery and the table setting this just leads to lean pickings much better to follow God’s plan which is very clear in this verse.

• Col 3:17 And whatsoever you do in word or deed do all in the name of The Lord Jesus giving thanks to God and the father by him

• Here Paul encourages the Christian to remember that whatever we do it should be done in the name of the Lord Jesus there is power in his name. And when we apply the name of Jesus by calling on this name the windows of heaven will be opened and the power of God will flow. But we must remember to give thanks for this blessing.

Colossians 3:18 - 4

Your home has a very important part to play in Christian living The admonition to wives children and servants is for submission and obedience the admonition to husbands and masters is for love and patience and understanding and justice.

In most cases the wives and children will be happy to submit and obey if husbands and masters will love and show proper understanding.

The expression in verse 9 be not better against them

means that husbands must not be harsh with their wives

• Colossians 3:18 • The salutation by my hand of me Paul, remember my

bonds Grace be with you Amen.

• The letter to Colossians was written during Paul’s first Roman imprisonment some time between 61 – 63 AD it would be a mistake to think that Paul wrote the complete letter in his own hands as the closing verse makes this very clear but after dictating this letter to Tychicus and Onesimus Paul confirmed its genuineness as was his custom see I Corinthians 16:21 and Galatians 6:11 or II Thessalonians 3:17 and Philemon 1:19.
