Exploring the role of outdoor adventure in the development of young people By Colin Wood - Course leader for Masters in Outdoor Education, University of Worcester Date: Wednesday 9th December 2020 Time: Webinar to begin at 18.00 and last approximately until 19.00 Where: Online Webinar Colin Wood explores the importance of outdoor adventures in the development of young people in a world that is increasingly characterised by virtual connection rather than by authentic connection to self, people and place. He traces the history of organised opportunities for outdoor adventure: from the scout and guide movements, to the development of outdoor residentials and the inclusion of adventurous activities in the national curriculum. Colin also explores the evidence of impact on young people, particularly the ways that outdoor adventure helps develop meaninful connections and allows young people to explore their own capabilities through facing consequential challenges in an unpredictable environment. In addition, Colin looks at the ways that outdoor adventure can contribute to the developemnt of a greater understanding of nature and pro- environmental values. Finally, the presentation explores the challenges of increasing opportunities for young people to engage in outdoor adventures. Exploring the role of outdoor adventure in the development of young people

Colin Wood explores the importance of outdoor adventures in the development of young people in a world that is increasingly characterised by virtual connection rather than by authentic connection to self, people and place.
