How it all started
Exponent is one of the largest scientific research companies in the world, with over 20 locations in the USA alone. With such a large company communication is very key to their success. When Exponent wanted to update their conference rooms with digital video they contacted Atlona to assist with solutions for scaling, cabling, extensions, and distribution.

Atlona and Lifesize in action!

The Lifesize video conferencing system was the perfect solution for Exponent to use for this project. Lifesize is one of the premier manufactures of video conferencing technology. Exponent brought some questions and concerns for retrofitting preexisting conference rooms with new high definition technology and their Lifesize systems. Atlona was happy to assist Exponent with this project in any way possible, and provided solutions that work great with any video conferencing system.

The first piece of equipment we provided to Exponent as a scaling/switching solution was the AT-LINE-PRO4. This unit is a multi source scaler/switcher with an HDMI output and digital coax out for alternative audio output. The LinePro4 is also capable of scaling any output from 480i all the way up to 1080, including PAL resolutions and refresh rates. This unit was used to connect the VCR, Lazerdisc, VGA for laptops, Cable TV via component video, Dell Micro PC via HDMI, and the Lifesize Room 220. Scaling was important to Exponent due to the diverse nature of their older input formats, and the use of a new Sharp 65” LCD TV.

The AT-VGA12 is a 1 input 2 output distribution amplifier. . This unit is able to output the VGA signal to the multiple devices while maintaining the signal integrity. The VGA12 also has an EQ and level adjustment to fine tune your image. Exponent need to be able to connect to the Pro4 and the Lifesize unit.

The BRI40SR HDMI Extender
The AT-BIR40SR is one of our most popular HDMI extenders that not only extend HDMI but offer bi-direction IR communication. The BIR40 was an important part of the installation in the Virginia office. The Lifesize camera’s HDMI cable needed to be extended, but the more challenging aspect of this was the camera control system which is transmitted via HDMI to the Lifesizecodec. The BIR40 was able to handle the camera controls and the video without signal loss or delay.

High speed HDMI cables

Exponent used a mixture of our standard High speed HDMI cables, and our plenum HDMI cables. Many states and counties are now requiring all cable runs to be plenum rated. Atlona’s plenum is UL CL2P, CL3P, and CMP certified so they are compliant with building and fire code standards. Exponents requirements for the HDMI connection was to run the cable from AV cabinet on one side of the room to their main projector.

Integrating it all!

Quote from Kevin Booker, Exponent’s Facilities engineer about integrating Atlona’s technology. “We chose the Atlona for its price point and the responsiveness of their technical sales staff. As a corporate customer, some “high end” A/V companies turn up their noses when it comes to dealing with someone who is not one of their “integrators,” while others assume since you aren’t an “integrator,” you must not be knowledgeable. Atlona’s technical staff has always been very professional and engaging. They work very hard to quickly identify and remedy any problems we run into”. Phoenix, Arizona
