Our Lady of Fatima Devotion
The 1st Saturday of each month will be
devoted to Our Lady of Fatima. The devotion
will include 8am Mass, Novena to Fatima / the
Rosary, Confessions after Mass and fellowship
in Carew Hall at 9am.
Our Lady came to Fatima with a message from God to eve-
ry man, woman, and child of our century. Our Lady of Fat-
ima promised that the whole world would be in peace, and
that many souls would go to Heaven if Her requests were
listened to and obeyed. Please join us in this devotion.
St Joseph’s Parish Monthly Recollection
On the First Friday of every month, at 7:30 PM, we hold our Monthly Parish Recollection. This is an hour of pray-
er, of recollection before our Lord present in the Blessed Sacrament - whose Sacred Heart is the source of immense
charity and generous love. The foundation of this prayer is God’s presence in our souls as Creator, Preserver, and
Author of Graces (“in Him we live, and move, and are” Acts 17:28). God is our Father, and our Friend and is our
sweet Guest. We must acknowledge the realization of this great truth: God is in each of us, our soul is His Temple.
This prayer of recollection includes the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction, Praying of the
Psalms, Silence, Gospel Reading and a Talk /Reflection on the following topics: The Cardinal Virtues of pru-
dence, justice, temperance and fortitude. The Theological Virtues of faith, hope and love. The gifts of the Holy
Spirit; wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord.
Every soul, hungry & thirsty for God, is invited to this holy hour every First Friday of the month to
adore, venerate & contemplate the Sacred Heart of Jesus, & to have a quiet dialogue with God.

The first reading from Isaiah tells of the servant of God with whom God is pleased and upon whom God has put his spirit. God is well pleased with him, who, we know as Jesus. Acts tells the story of how God revealed that the good news as to be preached to all people, not just the Jews. Matthew tells of the beginning of Jesus’ ministry.

From the Pastor’s Desk “Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. John tried to prevent him, saying ‘I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?’ Jesus said to him in reply, ‘Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.’”
As you may recall on the Second Sunday of Advent, we were told about John’s Baptism. We were told how the Pharisees and Sadducees were likewise coming to be baptized. They were trying to blend in with the rest of the people who were truly seeking repentance. The Pharisees and Sadducees were not seeking to repent from their sins, nor were they attempting to change their lives because they thought they were perfect. No, they were seeking to share in John’s popularity, but John called them out on it. Today John is faced with the fulfillment of his holy mission; the mission of the voice crying out in the wilderness to prepare the way of the Lord. Now the Lord is present and John is certainly faced with the dilemma that we all might have faced if Christ came to us to be baptized.
We may ask the question, why does He who is without sin need or even want to be baptized? Or what am I, a sinner, supposed to do when I come face to face with perfection? The answer that Jesus gives is that it must be done to fulfill all righteousness: meaning Christ came into the world to save us in every aspect of life. So even though He is without sin, Jesus wants to join us in the depths of our darkness to lead us out of sin. What about the question as to what we should do when we come face to face with perfection. We, after the shock, should let perfection do what it wants. In this case (and in every case) perfection wants to help us advance in every way and wants to help us be truly born again in the Spirit.
This is what Christmas is all about, and why God became one of us in the first place. As we end this Christmas Season today, by remembering Christ’s Baptism and His desire to be one with us, and as we enter Ordinary Time we are invited to live out our desire to be one with Him. We also now begin our journey toward Lent and the great feast of Easter, when the Lord’s desires and our desires come together as
we celebrate His conquering of sin and death and His calling us to new life in the Resurrection.
On the last Sunday of this month (January 26th), we begin our celebration of Catholic Schools Week, and we are indeed very blessed to have our own St. Joseph’s School. Catholic Schools provide young people with an excellent education of the things of this world and it teaches them how to build the Kingdom of God. In Catholic Schools, your children or grandchildren learn about the Gospel, Catholic Teachings and Moral values. If you have a child in Nursery School, Pre-K, or from grades K-8, please consider St. Joseph’s School. “Open your hearts to life!”
has been a favorite theme of Pope Francis and one that has particular urgency today, as the “culture of death” is gaining an ever wider foothold.
Some may think the phrase “culture of death” is too grim or too exaggerated because, on the surface at least, ours looks like a culture of fun and pleasure. We live in a culture dedicated to maximizing pleasure and minimizing pain or inconvenience.
No less than the Supreme Court of the United States has told us that it is our choice to live as we wish – letting nothing and no one stand in our way, including the child who may be growing in her mother’s womb. In upholding legal abortion for any reason or none, the Court declared in Planned Parenthood v. Casey: “At the heart of liberty is the right to define one’s own concept of existence, of meaning, of the universe, and of the mystery of human life.”
But when “liberty” leads to the doorstep of Kermit Gosnell and other abortion practitioners who have been in the news, we are forced to confront our culture’s real views about human life.
The mystery of human life is that we –every one of us – are precious to God even as we are – weak and sinful. As Pope Francis has pointed out more than once, God our Father never stops loving us and never tires of forgiving us. At our least sign of remorse, he fills us with his consolation, peace and hope.
Opening our hearts to life means that we reject the killing of human beings from the moment of conception to their natural death – by abortifacient “contraceptives” and abortion, in destructive embryo research and IVF procedures, by denying life-saving treatment to those with disabilities, and by “hastening death” of the elderly and dying in assisted suicide and euthanasia. Opening our hearts to life means opposing the death penalty, as well as slavery, human trafficking, terrorism and unjust war, and that we work to eradicate the conditions that prevent our brothers and sisters from realizing their full human potential.

Today is a special day for our school families. Today after the 12 noon Mass we are having a special Mother/Daughter Tea in Carew Hall. Thank you to Mrs. Giordano and her committee who put this event together for us. It is sure to be a favorite for years to come.

Good luck to our Middle School basketball team as they begin the season. Our first home game is Tuesday, January 14th. Go St. Joseph's!
Students will be enriching the curriculum with workshops from the CAPS center. Their presentations will be on bullying awareness, drug and substance abuse, safety and many other vital presentations.

Q. Why is Christmas on December 25?
A. Since the exact date of Christ's birth is not known, Dec. 25 was designated as the day to celebrate it
d u r i n g t h e 4 t h c e n t u r y i n R om e . One theory states that Romans declared Dec. 25
Christ's birthday to take attention away from a pagan sun god feast already on that day.
Another theory is theologians trying to calculate
Christ's birth date were not getting any help from the Scriptures, so they looked to the equinoxes and
solstices. It was widely believed that John the Baptist was conceived during the autumn equinox and born
during summer solstice (June 24). Luke 1:26 states
Christ was conceived six months after John, placing the date of his conception during the spring equinox
(March 25). If Christ were born exactly nine months
later, that would make his birthday December 25
(winter solstice).

Plan to attend the March for Life, Washington, DC
Wed. January 22, 2014
Plan to have your family represented. The Long Island Catholic (Jan. 2013) estimated attendance
at the 2013 March for Life to have reached 500,000. This peaceful pro-life Rally and March is a
demonstration of opposition to the Roe v. Wade pro-abortion Supreme Court Decision of 1973.
Many pro-life elected officials as well as religious and organizations leaders will speak at the ral-
ly. Go to usabortionclock.org for constant updates on the number of abortions committed. As of
12/28/13 the number of US Abortions since 1973 is 56,963,818. Work and pray the Roe V Wade
decision will be overturned.
A bus will leave from St. Joseph at 5AM (following the 4:30AM Mass) and will return at approx-
imately 11PM. A reservation for each seat on the bus and a deposit of $10 dollars (refundable on
bus) is required. There will be a breakfast stop. Snacks and beverages will be supplied for the trip
home, as the bus will not be making a supper stop. Please bring a lunch and drink for yourself. A
tip for the bus drivers will be collected. Sign-up after Mass on Sat. Jan. 11 and Sun. Jan. 12 or

from 8th Grade. This year's crew plan
is jam packed with interesting and fun activities here
at St. Joseph's and "off-campus" as well.

Free Food for NY Seniors - The C.S.F.P. funded by USDA NYSDOH, and administered by Catholic Charities is offering free food for 6 to 12 months post partum women, children from the age of 5 up to their sixth birthday, and seniors age 60 and over, who are income-eligible. Gross monthly income for seniors: Single Senior $1,174 or less or Senior Couple $1,579 or less. Meals-On-Wheels - Lake Nutrition Meals-on-Wheels provides food to elderly & homebound Monday thru Friday, two meals a day. Hot meals & cold meals are available for a charge of $6 for both meals. Call 467-8948 for information.

It is provided by the Catholic Counseling Center which is independent of & not controlled or supervised by the parish or diocese. Most insurance policies are honored.
